Support for A7s XAVC files

PostFri Mar 27, 2015 8:54 am

Good morning, are you planning to support natively the files that the Sony A7S produces (which are XAVC)?

Right now I have to pass through Final cut X and convert them to Apple pro res.

Thanks

Hi Charlie, A faster method than transcoding ProRes is to simply rewrap the files with Quicktime (thus they remain XAVC) using a tool such as EditReady. Resolve can handle XAVC-S, but what it has a problem with is playing back the LPCM audio from inside the .mp4 container. Once you rewrap as Quicktime, Resolve will have no problem playing the XAVC-S clips video and audio. Rewrapping is much faster than transcoding to ProRes and keeps the files smaller.

Thank you Jamie, it worked perfectly...is there a free alternative to EditReady (I tried the demo) ?

None that I'm aware of on Mac, there may be one for Linux or Windows. Personally, I put down the cash for it because it's such a useful tool. I think it was money very well spent.

Do you know how to do this on Windows, in best simplest way?

For Windows I use Cliptoolz. It's free or donateware.

Just choose Wrap to MOV from the from the codec menu.

Thanks so much David!

When googling for a solution, I get spammed with all results leading to (not so good but costly) Pavtube video converter. Cliptoolz does the job AND looks good. :-)

I can open XAVC-S files in the MP4 wrapper just fine from a Sony A7S and the play audio too.

This is on a MBP 15" Retina under Yosemite 10.10.4.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
