DRS12 B1 Bug: Tracker on Anamorphic material

Just a bump for the tracker bug using Anamorphic material. Seems it's still present in DaVinci Resolve 11.3 and DaVinci Resolve 11.3 lite. Tested on Mac OS X 10.10.3.

Setup:
- Project is 2K DCI 2048x858 square.
- Footage is 2x Anamorphic, using the "Cinemascope" pixel aspect setting clip attributes. Sources from ALEXA 2k 4:3, RED EPIC 3.8k etc.
- Project setting>Input scaling preset>mismatched resolution files is set to 'Scale full frame with crop'.
- Everything works, and all footage scales as expected to fill the 1:2.39 frame automatically. Everything lines up with the frame leaders.

Bug:
- When using the tracker/stabiliser on the anamorphic source material inside the square pixel project, the tracker tracks, but it seems like the horisontal output is scaled by a wrong factor. That means it drifts, and loses the feature lock because it overshoots the horisontal movement. Stabiliser doesn't work as it adds shake instead.

EDIT: Here is a video of the issue. The upper tracker is operating on square pixel aspect material, the lower is operating on anamorphic aspect material https://player.vimeo.com/video/142384811

Workarounds:
- Don't use anamorphic source aspect and 'Scale full frame with crop', and use input scaling manually to undistort the material.
- Also tried to set timeline to match the source material 2048x1536 Anamorphic, and use output scaling to reformat to 2048x858. Tracker bug is revered so it overshoots vertically instead.

Just tested and the bug is still present on DRS12 Beta 1. Tracker doesn't work if you toggle the pixel aspect ratio from square to cinemascope on a clip in the mediapool. You still need to keep it square and manually resize in input sizing in the timeline.

Unfortunately, still an issue in 12.0.1

Here is a small video of the issue:
This is Alexa XT Anamorphic ARRIRAW material, which is auto detected by resolve as Cinemascope aspect ratio. In the lower part of the video, I just inserted this clip in a DCI 2048x858 timeline, and tried tracking a power window: It simply doesn't work.
In the upper part I changed the Clip aspect to square and used input sizing to desqueeze horisontally, this works but brings forth a lot of lot of issues when mastering later on...

yes the tracking is done to the original anamorphic geometry but never scaled 2:1 vertically.

and I bet that any aspect ratio different than 1:1 will carry this bug.

I am not able to replicate this issue at this time.
I have brought in some anamorphic 2:1 material into a 2K DCI project, used a "Clip attributes" to change the aspect ratio from square to the Cinema.
It is worth stating that the project's timeline format has a square pixel aspect ratio.

project is 4096x1716
scaling full frame with crop
material is red, 3292x3160 flagged cinemascope

try to track a fixture in the right side of the frame and the track lose it when a hand is passing about 200 pixel north of it like the tracking area is offset from the viewing display by a factor of 2 vertically.
(just tried in my box)

12.0.1.006 Linux

Here is a project with Alexa anamorphic material - try tracking that power window

Hello, Anders,
I was able to replicate the issue with your media and the conditions of your project.
With the scaling set to "Scale full frame with crop" I am seeing the issue.

Two possible workarounds for now would be:
1.1. For a more solid reliable approach, but requiring some work ahead of time, use ”Scale entire image to fit" and using output sizing (will have a global effect) to replicate the needed scale based on the most frequently used type of footage in your show, with the edit or input sizing mode for individual adjustments.

2.1. A simpler approach, requiring only two mouse clicks, use ”Scale entire image to fit" when tracking, once tracked you can return to the "Scale full frame with crop" – the track will stick (once tracked). If you need to re-track simply return to the "Scale entire image to fit"

that is a workaround, a really painful one, like I said to another company: "we don't need another workaround, we have plenty of them and we called solutions".

Hi Dimitry.
Thank you for spending time on this, and supplying us a few possible workarounds.
I already have a workaround, that seems as a better choice (set footage to square, input scale horizontally by 2 but unfortunately it's not perfect.

It's really unfortunate that it is not fixed, as anamorphic and the ARRI Alexa are an extremely popular option at the moment....:-( We are on the fifth major feature this year using Alexa and Anamorphic lenses and this issue is really a big problem.

FYI, it's still present in 12.5b1 :(

Hi to all!

Is BMD aware that this bug is still happening? I was dealing with this just this morning in 12.5.2.

Anyone from support knows about this?

It should of been fixed ages ago... NO?

Thanks!

aaaaaaand it's fixed in DaVinci Resolve 14.1. Just tested and it works as intended.

From the release notes:
• Addressed various issues with tracking of Power Windows when working in Cinemascope
• Addressed various issues with tracking of Power Windows when using Center crop with no resizing
• Addressed an issue where stabilization would sometimes not work with Edit and Input sizing applied
• Addressed an issue where the tracking would be applied incorrectly when changing the timeline resolution or the clip pixel aspect ratio

:D :D :D :D

Now if the aspect of new power windows would follow the project aspect ratio it would be very cool. But this is excellent progress.

When creating new Power windows they always default to Aspect 50 but should default to Aspect 25 on a cinemascope project to get the correct shape.

I am in 14, and still seeing this problem. I have my project set up as non-anamorphic, and am using clip attributes to change my pixel aspect ratio, and my windows are not tracking properly, and even my dropper isn't selecting the right pixel. Is there a proper procedure to deal with this?

If I start a project as a "cinemascope" project, my footage gets squished vertically even more.
