Help to upgrade MacPro

PostThu Dec 27, 2012 7:26 am

Hello!
I work in video production and postproduction.
In my workflow, I use mainly ProResHQ (fullHD).
Waiting for new MacPro, it would like to be able to make upgrade in order to use at best 'After Effects' and 'Davinci Resolve'.
I have read that 2 video cards can be installed in the MacPro.
Can I add in my system a Nvidia Quadro4000, leaving ATI card in slot 1 ?
Which other configuration you can suggest to me?
Many Thanks.

Thank you very much, the guide is much profit, but I do not succeed to understand if I can leave the ATI4870 in slot 1 and insert the QUADRO4000 in slot 2. Can the two cards cohabit? The first for GUI and the second one for image processing. But does the guide advise to insert the GUI card in slot 2 ? I am not a hardware expert and I am worried to mistake purchase. I would have chosen the Quadro4000 perhaps but exist does a video card more suitable to the same one wraps of price (or also less) ?
Thanks.

Today I have made one test on Davinci but after some minute the MacPro goes in crash. It depends from the ATI4870? At this moment I don't have SSD as system hard disk. Below crash list, thanks for your help. Tommaso

The ATI4870 is not a supported Resolve GPU, and Resolve will not run if that's the only card in your system.

You can add a Quadro 4000 card in slot 2, and Resolve will be happy with that. The ATI4870 card is not a recommended Resolve GUI card, so I'm not sure if it will work as a GUI card or not. It might.

For Resolve use, putting a GTX570 card in slot one, and not using the ATI4870 or the Quadro 4000 would give better performance. And the GTX570 would likely be cheaper than the Quadro 4000. A stock GTX570 card will not give you the Apple boot screen, but works fine once the system boots up. You would need to download the latest NVIDIA Quadro series driver from the NVIDIA driver download site for OSX 10.7.5. Also, if you buy a stock PC GTX570 card, it won't come with the Aux power connector cables you need to connect the card power connectors to the Apple motherboard Aux power connectors, so you need to source those from somewhere.

You could buy an EFI BIOS modded version of the GTX570, from somewhere like MacVidCards.com and then you would have full Apple compatibility including the boot screen, and the card would come with the required power cables.

Thanks. Considering that I use also after effects CS6, what do you think about GT120mac + Quadro4000 mac?

Resolve would be happy with that.

If you were going to get a Mac GT120, a GTX570 or 680 would still give you better Resolve performance than the Quadro 4000. But I don't know what would make CS6 happiest.

Hi Dwaine Maggart,
Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have the Quadro 4000 in my PC workstation, are suggesting i get
GTX580 3GB instead?

I'm not suggesting anything. Just stating that the GTX580 will have better GPU performance than the Quadro 4000. In a Windows PC, the Quadro 4000 would still be the best recommended GUI card, assuming you have another GPU card(s). But if you only had a single graphics card, the GTX580 would have better performance.
