Davinci Resolve v12 for v11 users: the complete guide

PostTue Jul 28, 2015 7:08 pm

Hi everyone,

Is there an FAQ somewhere that I can quickly read/search with basic questions regarding what has changed?

A good example is that I need to change saturation on a grade, and the Primaries tab now has a (frustratingly unlabelled) COLOR BOOST option. Is that identical to 'Saturation', which was in the same place in 11? Or is there a hidden 'gotcha' that I should be aware of?

Finish your project in the original version you have started. Always something is missing in the new versions.

That's really not helpful, or on-topic. Clearly I am testing the new software on a backup of a non-urgent project.

Anyway, back the actual topic... I'll add another change that confused me - qualifiers. How do I now turn on and off the HIGHLIGHT function? the icon is missing... (to be clear: I know how to do this now - the highlight function has simply moved to the viewer - but I'm saying it would be great to add to this 'guide')

From the manual:

"Color Boost: Lets you naturalistically raise the saturation of regions of low saturation, sometimes referred to as a vibrance operation. Can be used also to lower the saturation of regions of low saturation. 0 is unity. The range is –100 (minimum) through +100 (very high)."

Saturation is there, but labels not showing on lower UI resolutions. I believe this behaviour will be looked at as it's confusing.

Not too sure about the qualifier highlight button, you can find it over on top of the viewer instead but I am kind of missing where it used to be.

There's no quick way to discover what's new, you'll need to read the manual and play around as some things have quite dramatically changed. Here's a few notes on some of the new features:

Ok, sorry, I thought you need a solution.
If you have time then test it and Resolve!

Alexis Van Hurkman has a quick rundown that touches on the new features as they relate in the v12 manual:

http://vanhurkman.com/wordpress/?p=3302

And Pat Inhofer, Dan Horan, and the other MixingLight.com people have just posted a brief 12-minute overview of new features and critiques (a paid website).

I, too, would have liked to have seen like a 100-page "quickstart" guide that basically says, "if you know Resolve 11 already, here's the new stuff and how to use it." But I get the manual can't be all things to everybody.

My advice is just to jump in, twist knobs, and see what happens. Take 2 days out of your life (if possible), sit down with the manual, and go through all the important stuff -- without clients, without distractions, and not on a paid project. This is still a Beta version and I'm nervous about using any v.0 software on client sessions.

Yeah - the 'Magic Wand' icon seems to be pulled from the Qualifier panel and now lives exclusively above the Viewer. The gotcha there is if you've used the 'ellipses' menu to hide the Viewer Options, in which case it's completely gone form the UI.

In that case, the only way to get to the Highlight Mode is to use the keyboard shortcut or the pulldown menu: View > Highlight > Highlight

RE: New Features Guide - While I'd love a New Features Guide, given a choice between that and not getting the full User Guide... I'll take the full User Guide.
