How to get Resolve 12 to use NVIDIA over Intel GPU?

PostWed Jul 29, 2015 1:44 pm

Hi

I'm trying out Davinci Resolve 12 beta (as I cannot seem to find the Resolve Lite 11). My problem is that I'm trying it on my zenbook laptop and it has a Intel HD4000 a Nvidia GeForce 840M GPU in the laptop. Davinci reports GPU: Intel HD4000.

I have search but cannot find how to get Davinci to recognize the Nvidia. I have no complaints about missing CUDA when the program starts but I have terrible playback of the videos in Resolve. They play back just fine in full HD in Ubuntu with VLC.

I tried to tell the NVIDIA driver to use NVIDIA GPU when launcing Resolve, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Any advice, pointers to FAQ or similar much appreciated.

In Nvidia Settings, Nvidia Control Panel> Manage 3D Settings you should have a program settings tab , then you should point to Resolve.exe and select High-Performance Nvidia Processor instead of Integrated Graphics.

OK, tried to generate a video and I got a black flicker over the video so I removed Resolve 12 and found the 11 Lite in the end.

With the Resolve 11 Lite I get a message that OpenCL is not available even though I upgraded the NVIDIA drivers and the 840M does have CUDA.

Is it that the Lite version is so dumb as to not register that you have a NVIDIA card in the laptop and only insist on using the first card, anyway?

I have set it up so that the NVIDIA card sould be used when starting the Resolve. :(

Resolve 12 sees my GPU in my laptop just fine. I'm using a GT650M.

Preben,

Try adding the lines below to the Resolve Preferences - Advanced area. Then save the preferences and restart Resolve. This is the pre-V12 solution. I don't have a way locally to test, so I'm not sure this will still work the same in Resolve 12.

LsManager.3.NumGPUs = 1
LsManager.3.GPUMapping = 0
LsManager.3.GPUMappingEnable = 1
Local.GPU.Mode = CUDA

Thanks! Works in 11 Lite. I'll test in 12 tomorrow.

How come something as this cannot be automated ?

Hmmm

Still getting 1.5 fps rendering speed (only applied a BlackMagic LUT), so either the Geforce 840M is too weak, or it didn't work, just removed the error message.

Anyway, hopefully it will do for what I need to do at the moment. :)

It's not just about the GPU, the CPU can play a big part, especially on highly compressed footage as the CPU is what is used to decode it first.
What CPU does your laptop have?

Playing back in VLC is not the same as playing back in Resolve. VLC takes the file and when it plays back it plays back just the partial frames between each full frame. Resolve has to decode each frame out as a full frame then play them back

Hi

Have not had times to retry Resolve 12 Beta yet as I have been busy learning how to edit and grade in Resolve 11 Lite :-) Works great. I like it.

Perhaps it is the CPU, but playback worked fine in Resolve 11 Lite even before I added the codes to enable the other gfx card, so my hypothesis for now is that it is related to Resolve 12 Beta. Anyway, I'll add a post here when I have had time to test Resolve 12 again.

Side note: as I figured out that I only needed dvd-pal resolution of my videos for now I got 21 fps, so no complaints. This is just for on the go edit anyway, I'll build a proper stationary rig for real editing and grading. Need to find some info on recommended hardware...
