GPU Memory Full and Digital Noise on Export

PostWed Jul 29, 2015 2:02 pm

I'm on an 8 Core 2009 Mac Pro with a GT120 for display and a GTX 570 2.5 GB GPU for Resolve as well as a Dell Precision T7610 with Dual Quadro K4000s with 3GB memory. Sadly, only one is used for resolve the other is for display.

Edit: I'm on Resolve 11. OSX 10.10.3 with latest CUDA driver.

Normally, I just stick to HD res but I had a project come up that was mainly 4K Red/3K Red with a 4K export to ProRes 4444XQ so I had to use the Mac for export.

On export, I kept getting GPU Memory is Full notifications on Red clips with noise reduction applied and the exports would all just be digital noise.

When I remove the noise reduction, I can export the clips without issue. And on the PC side, I can export the clips to Cineform 12Bit RGB with noise reduction.

Is there any way that I can make the export work on the Mac? I've tried Pre-Rendering to cache, cache renders fine, but export fails. Can I just upgrade the GPU to one with more memory to solve it? The PC can export fine and it just has .5 more GB of GPU memory (although it is a Quadro card) than the Mac.

Thanks,
Julian

It appears you need more VRAM. 4GB is the recommended minimum for higher than HD workflows. But it depends on what type of corrections you are using. Noise reduction takes a significant amount of VRAM, so the fact turning that off makes things work, pretty much points to not enough VRAM.

But also make sure in Resolve Preferences - Video I/O and GPU, that you do NOT have "Use Display GPU for Compute" checked, as that would limit you to the amount of VRAM on the GT120 card.

Thanks Dwaine. BTW, nice meeting you at the colorist mixer at NAB last April!

I don't have the GT 120 checked off I'm sure of that. I do know that on my PC side, I can get away with that 4K render on a 3GB Quadro K4000.

Is there a work around besides that? Is there anyway I can use the Cache? If not either way I'm going to look into 4GB GPU options.

If caching is working, you should be able to render from cache, and have that work.

I tried it but I still had the same issue. Maybe I didn't have the cache set up properly. I'll have to research.

To render from cache, on the Deliver page, in the Advanced area, under Options, there is a checkbox called "Use render cached images". Is that what you enabled to render the cached files?

Yes, I did, but maybe I set up the render cache incorrectly. I still got GPU error on export.

Try setting the cache mode to User, and select the entire timeline to be cached.

If that cached timeline plays back OK, then I would expect the render from that cache to be OK. I'm guessing you don't have everything cached, and the non-cached items are causing your issue.

I found out what the cache issue was. My project Red Debayer was set to Med. and I was exporting with Force Debayer Res to Highes Quality so the Cache wasn't being used and that was causing the discrepency. If I set the project debayer to Full Premium and try to cache I will get snow in the cache so I guess next step is GPU upgrade.
