hello,
i was waiting for the release of davinci 12 so hard but now i am really disappointed cause the program runs soooo slow on my 4gb gtx680 macpro system. davinci 11 is lightning fast in comparision..
why the heck? as my system runs 32gb ram, this could not be the problem, also the cpu is fast.
when i use iphone video material the performance is like working with 8k raw.. slow and lagging (i tried it with 240fps superslowmotion)


perhaps you can adjust the system performance, dear blackmagic team..

Are you using OSX Yosemite 10.10.3 or higher?

I guess the Davinci was built for PRO codecs... Working with native files from iphone or lowend cameras can cause this. For example - Iam using JVC GY-HM750 as my secondary camera for live video and it is using Mpeg 2 MP@HL which is a Long GOP codec and Davinci cant even open such a thing... Iam converting it to DNxHD. Video from my Phantom 3 using their built in 4K camera is a problem too - Davinci CAN load it but its lagging as hell. But - when I load my R3D files from Red its OK (using a quarter or half quality or something like that).

So I suggest - try to convert it to some pro codec like Apple prores or something and you ll see

i have some raw files and will test it tonight. hope that the performance with raw files is better. (which is strange, because they deliver so much more information..)

I have to say, I just worked with some R3D 4K footage last night on a 4-minute project, and I was surprised that the performance subjectively felt about 20% better than it was on v11. No slowdowns, real-time playback, all was fine, even with several DNR and blur nodes. I typically work at half-res good, which is more than enough for my 1080 HD monitor.

I've noticed a huge speed up with ProRes codecs.

That's very good news. I definitely noticed that the Edit window is a lot "peppier," for lack of a better word. It's very, very fast and responsive now, far better than it's ever been before.

I also find that there does seem to be a little extra snap in the windows.

Ok i tested with cdng files and everything is really smooth (smoother than v11), so gladly there seem to be just problems with non pro codecs.
Is it possible to recode the files within davinci for better performance? Thx

resolve 12 manual: Chapter 5 "Improving performance, proxies and render cache"
especialy in your case -> page 137: using optimized media

+ Resolve 12 indeed feels snappier than Resolve 11 when editing and grading
- Exports are slower: Exports from Magic Lantern DNGs to DNxHD ran at 27.5 FPS in Resolve 11. The same export now runs at 22 FPS in Resolve 12. Again for same project and clips.
~ As per MSI afterburner I can see it uses a bit more of the GPU for optical flow when slowing footage down and optical flow is marginally slower when using 'best' settings. Other/lower settings for optical flow run in real time so cannot judge. This point may be subjective as I don't remember the exact FPS from Resolve 11
