BMD Raw Footage and Resolve 12 Tutorials

PostThu Jul 30, 2015 11:31 am

Hi There,

I am waiting on my Ursa Mini pre-order and in the meantime I want to start getting to grips with Resolve 12, as I have not used any versions previous.

Are there any plans on the horizon for BMD, or one of its close associates, to release basic tutorials with raw footage for people to practice with?

For example there are lots of video images used in BMD's PDF manual guide? Why not make these available for download?

Even if this was a chargeable service I would sign up for it.

In the meantime, it would be appreciated if anyone upload some 2k raw footage for people like me to test out.

The last time this was done was by John Brawley in 2012;

I am downloading these assets at the moment, but think a more current folder (of say 5 shots) that can be intercut together should be made available, maybe in 2k raw?

I would certainly appreciate it.

If anyone does stumble across any tutorials for resolve 12 (i know it has only just come out - but as any emerge), or; if any people out there have raw footage they can make available please post on this thread.

Many thanks

Finding sample footage can be frustrating. I sometimes teach colour grading and it's often hard to find enough high quality media for students to really get stuck into. I suggest some googling and digging around, but you may hit a lot of old dead links.

You can try some of these from the Arri site, they're shot on Alexa and Amira:

There's a few RED samples on here:

They're not from URSA, but it's good to practice with a range of sources.

I recommend searching specifically for DNG files on google within the past couple years, should be able to come up with something. (For BMCC and BMPCC, that is.)

As for tutorials, the core functionality of the software (grading) hasn't changed much at all, so I'd just watch available tuts on previous versions. And if the UI is too confusing to start, I'd recommend using 11 or 10 in the interim until new tuts are posted online.

Tutorials for Resolve 12 are currently in the works from the usual suspects:

Warren Eagles' FXPHD Resolve Tutorials:
http://www.fxphd.com/store/fastforward/ ... damentals/

Alexis Van Hurkman's Resolve Tutorials:
http://www.rippletraining.com/categorie ... ducts.html

Patrick Inhofer's Mixing Light Resolve Tutorial:
https://mixinglight.com/color-correctio ... al-series/

I would bet at least one of these will be out in the next 30-45 days, which is pretty fast for a new version that only hit the streets a few days ago.

We've been buying most of the Rippletraining stuff over the years and were never disappointed.

Plus, Alexis van Hurkman also wrote the recent manuals after all, which are massively improved over the old ones.
