There's no way to auto-sync audio & video in viewer.

You're in the Media workspace, syncing your video and audio files. You select a video clip to put it in the viewer, then start hunting for the matching audio clip. When you find it, there's no way to simply say, "auto-sync these." You have to look at the name of the video file above the viewer, switch the file browser to list view so you can see the filenames, hunt for the video file by name, then reselect it so you can right-click and kick off a waveform sync.

You should be able to simply auto-sync the audio and video that are currently loaded into the viewers.

And, the video and audio files being shown in the viewers should both be highlighted in the browser. I understand that the metadata pane on the right only pertains to one file at a time, but the also-shown file can be highlighted in yellow instead of red.
