Resolve 12.01 - Bugs and Feature requests

PostWed Oct 07, 2015 6:10 am

Sorry for the long list - these are the bugs I have noticed and compiled over the past few weeks using Resolve 12. And some (hopefully reasonable) small feature requests.

Thanks, as always, to the hard working Blackmagic team for a great product, that I enjoy using every day.

MAC PRO (Late 2013), 6 core, d700s, 32GB RAM, 10.10.5
Resolve 12.0.1.006

GENERAL

BUG Media Page Usage Data
- Usage data wildly incorrect. Formerly if you had a master timeline plus one other timeline, you could use Usage to remove unused rushes from your project, by identifying the clips with Usage set to 1 (i.e. those appearing in the Master Timeline only. Now when you run Update usage data, you get wildly inaccurate results. As a workaround, I flag all clips in the project timeline, sort by flag - this allows you to remove the unflagged clips from the project.

BUG Grab All stills - Black Frames
- Grab all stills regularly misses several shots grabbing black frames. Manually grabbing stills from these shots works fine.

BUG Right click menus
- Right click menus need to all function consistently as per R11, allowing click hold release on selected menu item. On many menus this currently dismisses the menu without executing your choice.

BUG Lightbox
- Scaling on lightbox stills very low quality, images are pixelated and distorted
- Scale range on Lightbox could be broadened (ie I would love to be able to go all the way up to 2 images wide on a 1080 broadcast monitor

BUG Offline reference garbled when using Output Scaling preset
- when an output scaling preset is enabled, wiping to the offline reference presents a heavily distorted unusable image

BUG Reference wipe to offline turns off output blanking on timeline
- Output blanking should be maintained on timeline when wiping to offline reference - no way to compare your blanking in Resolve to the Blanking in the offline

BUG Offline Offset moves sometimes while in colour page
-No idea why this occurs but sometimes the frame offset on the offline viewer in the Edit page changes while on the colour page - obviously this shouldn’t happen

CACHING

BUG / FEATURE REQUEST Caching on Multicam / Compound Clips

TRACKING / WINDOWS

BUG / FEATURE REQUEST
Tracking on clips with speed changes
- I often see tracking issues on speed changed clips where tracked shapes oscillate and move around rapidly (when you render to individual clips). Seems tracking is only being written to the visible frames in retimed clips, and that sometime (re tracking?) the tweening between those frames is not being calculated correctly. As a suggested solution, fix tweening. Also perhaps some option (checkbox to track at original 100% clip speed / track all frames

BUG Clear track data Button
- Clear all tracking points “reset” button (next to drop down menu) does nothing - Should clear all tracking from current window

FEATURE REQUEST Clear track data (Dropdown Menu)
- Only applies to 5 default trackers - this seems out of date
- Should be replaced with an option to clear track data from specific shape currently selected, or clear all track data on node
- In addition track data should be able to be cleared from the windows page

FEATURE REQUEST
- Windows should be selectable from the Tracker panel, perhaps through a dropdown

PANEL FEATURE REQUEST
- Next / previous control for windows when in Tracker

HANDLES MODE / SHOW CLIP WITH HANDLES

FEATURE REQUEST Timeline mode vs “Show clip with handles”
- Error messages are intrusive and disruptive, no good reason why this shouldn’t be allowed
- You should be able to switch to timeline track when in show clip with handles
- You should be able to switch to timeline track when in timeline filter mode

BUG Handles on first clip in timeline
- You should be able to show handles at the start of the first clip in the timeline (currently doesnt work)

FEATURE REQUEST Can’t add Markers or flags in Handles mode
- should be able to add markers or flags in handles mode

DELIVER PAGE

BUG / FEATURE REQUEST XML Export
- Explicit export xml / EDL options should be a checkbox made visible when you choose to render individual clips, with options for type of XML, name, location. The current location of XML export in timeline menu and the way xml’s magically update referencing rendered clips not clear (though should not be removed) - an xml etc referencing rendered clips is a delivery task and makes sense to be available as an option in the deliver page

FEATURE REQUEST Delivery page - Disable output sizing / Blanking
- There should be a checkbox to disable output sizing on render, including output blanking, in addition to / as per disable edit and input sizing. This would allow you to “render at source resolution”, with all sizing disabled, without having to do it twice because you forgot to disable output blanking (happens to me all the time).

DAVINCI PANELS

BUG / FEATURE REQUEST Project settings / Control panel
- Sensitivity setting for Log wheels (master balance) or sensitivity setting for log controls should follow settings for Primary wheels (they don’t currently)

BUG Add Outside Node
- Add outside should function as per right click command (i.e.. two nodes, one is already an outside of the other. Add a third outside node to the first node - with panels the alpha connection runs through the new node, with the right click command it doesn’t change or interfere with the existing connections)

FEATURE REQUEST Resolve Control panel
- Repeated press of primary button should cycle between Primary wheels, bars, and log (with a preference in Project Settings / Control Panel to ignore bars ie)
- Onscreen 1/2 selector under Colour wheels should auto switch when those controls are used (to display the values while adjusted)

FCPXML IMPORT

BUG / FEATURE REQUEST
- Less compound clips please
- And / Or allow compound clips to be decomposed in timeline

Some very good suggestions here. I've run into the "Usage" problem myself.

Yeah the usage thing is weird. From 0 usage, I put a clip in the timeline and apparently it's now being used 5 times. :?

What's more, I've had a clip seemingly used 6 times... when all I've done is loaded it into the source monitor!

Another bug for you - clip markers don't show up in the edit page if you have timeline view set to the one that doesn't show thumbnails.

For some reason my h264 offline reference clips are slipped forward one frame. I exported the playout from Premiere with the timecode burned in. The BITC should start (and starts in all other software) at 00:59:30:00 but in Resolve the first frame of the clip that shows is 00:59:30:01. The clip stays in sync at that point but mysteriously the first frame of h264 clips is gone.

I generally ask for the editor to give me handles for the reference movie, so it starts a second or two prior to first frame of picture, and there's another second or two of black on the end. I have never seen an offset. However, I'm generally opposed to using H.264 in post, so if I get one of those as a reference movie, I'll convert it in Resolve to QT422LT just because it's less stressful under Mac OSX. No change in timecode for me, and the picture is good enough that I can at least see where all the cuts are and if there's any repositions.

There's a bug in the DaVinci Resolve 12.01 that cause a bin to disappear. When I reloaded a project I suddenly lost all bins except the master bin. There was no indication that anything is amiss until the project is loaded again, so it is easy to lose hours of work this way. It seems to me that the clips and sequences do not appear to actually be removed, just hidden. You can verify this by attempting to create a new sequence with the same name as one that disappeared, only to be told that a sequence of that name already exists. I have not been able to find or unhide the bins again. Is there any strategy to deal with?

Is anyone else having trouble with adding media as offline references? I've managed to get it to work *once* so far in v12; apart from that right clicking and selecting 'add as offline reference clip' does absolutely nothing

Also having other bugs randomly occurring, such as 'dip to colour dissolve' not having a colour picker to select which colour I want to dip to, instead opting to have a slider next to where it says colour, that I can't move anyway. And sometimes a window will refuse to track, I've had that happen after accidentally being in the Stabiliser view, then I'll clear track data and go back to Window but it won't track at all, and pressing the play forward/reverse just behaves as if I've pressed them in the viewer window i.e. it will play the timeline forward/back. Have to restart the program to fix it.

I'm having to restart R12 to fix rather a lot lately it seems...

Now I'm grading an advert that has had a version change. I import the new XML and for some reason I can't change the alpha type of the new GFX that have come in. I know they have alpha, I know it's straight, but when I select straight, nothing happens. If I right click again on alpha type it's still saying 'ignore'. Deleting all GFX and reimporting does nothing. Restarting does nothing. !!!!!

Edit: problem solved by importing XML into new project. I didn't have to save the new project, I just got it working then reopened the old project, reimported and hey presto! My alpha channels are back.

As much as I hate Autodesk Smoke and as much as R12 trounces all over it as a professional product, R12 really is approaching Smoke levels of reliability and randomness right now. And I'm not even using a Windows machine.

One other thing to note, is that when I couldn't change the alpha type, the Usage count for these GFX was stuck on 'x', even though they were all being used in my timeline. I have remote grading on and Smart cache if that affects anything.

Me too (with 12.1). This should be fixed! There should perhaps be a setting that says whether or not mere membership in a multicam constitutes a usage (because an angle change could cause the member clip to become active) or whether only actual usage should be propagated up through the multicam (so if an angle is never used it is properly reported as not being used). Right now the answer is clearly just wrong.
