output to tape v12

PostWed Dec 23, 2015 4:37 pm

Hi
Trying to output a timeline to HDCAMSR tape in version 12.2. The power mastering button is greyed out. Hitting start record like the manual says does nothing. Working on Mac pro 3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5 and Studio 4k card.
I usually just output files and use Avid to go to tape but was trying to save time. How do I add jobs to tape queue if power mastering is greyed out?

I have deck control. If i add clips it does output fine but not from my timeline. Do I have to make a self contained file first to get it to output?

Thanks

Are you using Resolve Studio? Power Mastering is not available in the non-Studio version.

Thanks for the reply.
Our Mac version is free version however in the literature it states you can output to tape via free version. Start record does not do anything in delivery page.

If you look on the DaVinci Resolve Comparison list on the web site, you'll see the Power Mastering is not included in the free version.

Thanks Dwaine

I have in the past used our linux version under 11 to output to tape and thought I was missing something on the Mac side. I was $995.
Thank you

Hi all

I'm having an issue Power Mastering out of Resolve Studio 12.2 - in fact I tried it for the first time yesterday. A couple of observations: with a Mac Pro 4,1 and Decklink 4K and serial control to an HDW-1800, it was frame accurate and fabulous - much better than FCP7 ever managed using its Pipeline drivers, with AJA.

However, I gave up after one clip because:
It kept stopping me and saying "No video input signal" in the Deliver page. I wasn't capturing, I was mastering, but Resolve kept throwing me back to the Render tab. Loading a clip to master out seemed to stop this loop.
It failed to respond to new in and out points on the source sequence. Initially it would keep re-submitting the new shot range to the queue, but with the old inpoint. After a quit and relaunch, it suddenly would only offer the first frame of the sequence as an inpoint, and would ignore persistent efforts to Mark In or Mark Out. However, typing in an inpoint for the HDCAM seemed to work fine.
In the end I rendered each clip out and threw them to tape with Media Express - still frame accurate (same engine I guess) but a tedious workaround.

So is Power Mastering now broken in R12.2, and sufficiently niche to not worry about too much? Or should I reinstall Resolve to see if it sorts things out?

Otherwise, Resolve is a great tool, and getting better. It's certainly more stable than the king of beachballs for H.264-based editing, FCP X - at least on my tower. Keep up the good work!

1) go to the media page
2) be sure that you go from resolve to deck and loop back to resolve
3) check your deck input settings: for an unknown reason it sets to 24fps instead of 23 .978, switch that.
4) check if you can load from the tape, you don't have to load just attempt to sync.
5) once you sync there you will be good to go

Thanks Walter - odd that it needs loopback from the deck - the Decklink already has tri-sync going in. This is all at 25 btw...

As for the refusal to submit a clip correctly to the queue - still a mystery.

yes, i noticed that Resolve like the loop back for whatever reason. ..

for the "queue" issue, if you referring to the fact that "like any other software" out there, if I mark a [IN] point the timecode in the IN of the tape should match (unless specified otherwise) then yes.

when I have to do qc fixes to a master punching the bloody timecode manually for each clip is really silly

Hi Walter,
You seem to output to tape more often than me. Last time for me was 3 years ago. Do you recall if a trisync generator is needed? I'm trying to force a HDW-2000 HDCAM to get the ref from its SDI input ( output from the decklink ) but I'm stuck.
Thanks.

If you go from resolve to deck and from deck to resolve, it should work.

Yes, that's what I did but each time I went into tape mode I had an issue with the reference signal. I ended up doing a crash record but it was not comfortable at all. Anyway I hope it is the last time I have to output to tape as french TV channel have just started to accept files instead.
