need better Media Offline indicators --- please

In a perfect world,
every client who brings me a project would have every media file perfectly organized and placed in logical folders on one drive... perhaps they asked me before the edit ;-)

in the real world I'm not always a part of the workflow until I'm hired
and of course I get jobs spread out over many drives, USB sticks, and dropbox (shudder)...

so being able to track down Offline Media is very important

but currently the tools are sparse and in some cases broken..

I do like being able to see all my clips in the lightbox (yay!)
but there are other ways we might need to find materials (and different kinds!)

1- there is no column listing for media being Offline
this means I can't search for it in a project, no smartbin can be created ...
--> offline media smart bin -- yes please..

2 - there seems to be no way to understand if any non video media is off line..
so no way to know if audio is offline or not...
this is very important if I'm working on a conform and color correct job...
( I'm a fan of having an audio tone for offline audio media - as FCP7 did )
(or what would the audio version of lightbox look like? ;-)

3 - Buried away in the "Edit Index" there is a selector for "Show Offline Clips Only"
currently in 12.5b3 if I select that I get nothing in the created list - even though I have offline clips.
this seems to be a BUG...
perhaps I'm not understanding how that works..

thanks
and thanks for letting us (the rabble) at least have a place to bring sme of these issues up

peace

WH

Thirded.

We need :
- a warning when a project we open is missing media
- a simple way to reveal/sort the offline medias in a project (via Smart Filter for example ?)

I was pointed to this feature by Alexis Van Hurkman, but it seems to do nothing : I have a project with 240 offline clips and the feature return nothing.

The edit index offline indication is used when you import an EDL/XML/AAF that directs to a clip thats not in the media pool even if its in the list. We will look into that description and also 'offline' indications in general.
thanks for feedback.

This feature is for reference (offline) edit clips when they have been imported as such. It is not for 'offline media' display.

And it will be great also to add visible indication for Optimized Media for clips in Media Pool. May be an icon on preview image (like an audio symbol), or colored border. It will be much more clearly to understand when go to List mode.

A column or a smart search/smart bin for offline files is absolutely necessary!

+100!!!

Also, offline clips should remain red on the timeline, even when zoomed out. Currently you can identify offline clips by the red Offline icon when zoomed into the timeline, but as you zoom out they start to look like other clips, making them harder to find without a lot of scrolling.

And I'd really REALLY like a warning if any renders I've just lined up contain missing media. Rendering something for 5 hours only to find out there's 1 second of 'Media Offline' in the non-reusable render is killing.

It's sometimes impossible to find out without zooming in or playing the whole timeline.

yes, having some way of listing all the missing clips easily via a smart bin or whatever would be brilliant. Especially when you are archiving or moving a project off to another drive. Sometimes the clips that are showing as missing can be removed anyway from the library if they aren't being used in the final timeline.

I wish relinking clips from a timeline to media pool clips were as easy and clever/automatic as relinking media pool clips to a new storage location is. Every XML export I do from Premiere these days, even if they're full start-to-end instances of a clip (no cuts), causes media conflicts in Resolve. I am so fed up with manually going through a timeline pushing Resolve's nose into the right clips one by one.

...Or maybe we just need a Blackmagic Premiere plug-in that can export a timeline to Resolve without going through a third-party XML format that neither Premiere nor Resolve natively use.

Re-upping this topic because it's too important.
Detecting Offline Media is crucial to delivering movies on tight schedules.

I agree with this one and also the offline indicators/search. Would be very useful and hopefully not so much work to add.

Related to this?
Improved reporting of media usage:
A list of where a media item is used, audio/video and whether it’s offline.

Looks like there's still not a solution? If only you could find all offline media with a smart bin!

Yes having it in the smart bin would be great.
Another option that would be nice if you could have a column that just says Offline. In FCPX its super easy to find offline files, would be very useful to have in Resolve too!

A warning if you have offline media on a selected timeline. And hopefully a shortcut to find them.

When doing large and long projects, it's normal for me to have offline clips because as the project evolves, certain vfx get updated or clips get media managed out of the drives. So in the media pool these would show as offline but not so easy to figure out if any of all these clips is being referenced in a specific timeline.

V16 manual page 480
Edit Index Filter

‚ Show Offline Clips: Isolates all offline clips (clips that have become unlinked from the corresponding source media on disk) in the Timeline, so you can quickly navigate to each one and troubleshoot the issue.

In a good old EDL format

See my earlier post 27th May. The Edit Index feature is for imported AAF, XML & EDL conforms.

Hey BlackMagic Design, we NEED this :
- a warning when a project we open is missing media
- a simple way to reveal/sort the offline medias in a project (via Smart Filter for example ?)

Right now if I open a project with 15TB of footage (clips, graphics, motion design, screencasts, etc), the only way to know if media is missing is to go through dozens of timelines and bins manually

So it is!

This is a missing feature!

Most of my work is conforms so I have never realised.

Further investigation reveals that the Edit Index will show offline clips in a timeline only if the original clip is REMOVED from the Media Pool. If the file on disk is disconnected from the clip in the Media Pool it will NOT show in the Edit Index. The Media Pool clip in this case will be highlighted RED to show that it is disconnected. Also the red highlighting on the timeline is different for these two cases.

Would be amazing to create a smart-bin that shows all the offline clips across the project.

Searching for how to do that is what brought me to this thread - I presume it is still not possible with a smart bin?

I don’t think it could be that hard to implement.
Knowing very little about writing code allows me to hold this opinion.

Hi All, I'm from the Future,
it's currently 2021 and still no feature for this. How can we put a man on the moon and soon mars and not simply find offline footage. I mean, worst-case scenario can't someone write a script to search for red looking media haha. that'll work!

I have always sorely missed the function to search for missing media. It's a shame that this has still not been implemented.

There are three ways to find and relink offline media.
The easiest is on the cut page where the offline media link in the header on the media pool shows in red and u select it to get a pop up to act.
The other two are relink options on the media page media pool. Details in the manual, but a simple selection of the offline clips and a right click, or right click on the bin, let’s u select a drive folder to search.

I just finished the alpha of a utility to help with conform on complicated projects. It’s targeted at colorists (like me) who receive documentary projects via xml from Premiere that have lots of different resolutions, framerates, etc. It can help with reconnecting offline media that never got imported in the first place.

I made a little demo video to show what it does: https://vimeo.com/546755603/141d63e8fb.

If anyone is interested in beta testing it, let me know. It’s only OSX right now (sorry!), but I’m hoping to port it eventually. DM me if you want a download link.
