Resolve 12 with 1440x1080 clips - Squished Video

Update: Resolved! For anyone else in a similar situation, see last entry or any of the fine responses by this community.

Hi,

I'm new to Davinci Resolve and have downloaded version 12.
My clips were recorded with a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100
The record settings were 1440x1080 MP4
On Windows 7 recognizes the width as 1440 width.
When I open them with Quicktime, it displays at 1920x1080 (the aspect ratio that I want).
When I import the clips into Resolve, it says they are 1440x1080, 29.970 frames rate, H.264, 48000 bit rate.
The clip settings are on square pixels.
I set my project settings as 1920x1080.
My render settings are 1920x1080, 29.97 frames rate, Quicktime MPEG4 Video (by default).
I get a render that is 1920x1080 but squished video with black bars on either side.

What I want is a nice, quick-loading video to upload to Youtube. It doesn't necessarily need to be 1920x1080 but I want to retain that aspect ratio. How do I render a video without the image being squished and have black bars. What do I need to do?

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Update: I ran all my .mp4 files through Quicktime and re-exported them as .mov with the correct aspect ratio. Is there a way I can replace the movie files in my media pool? Or do I have to edit the whole thing again with my new clips?

Hi Jack,

I think there's a few ways you can achieve this. The clips at 1440x1080 will need to have the correct pixel aspect ratio to play back as 1920x1080.

One way to do this is if you right click on the clip in the media pool, and select 'clip attributes...', under 'pixel aspect ratio' you'll want to select a relevant setting. I don't have a 1440x1080 clip to test with but I'd guess that the DVCPRO HD setting will do the trick. If not, one of the others might.

You could also select in Project Settings->Image Scaling->Input Scaling Preset to 'Stretch frame to all corners'.

Alternatively, you could use the sizing or transform controls on the edit or colour page to achieve much the same thing.

My 1440 files come in as DVCPRO HD for the pixel aspect.

1.333 leaves thin black bars left and right

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I 'resolved' it this way:

I exported my 1440x1080 .mp4 clips in Quicktime and exported them as 1980x1080 .mov clips. They have the same duration.
I imported these .mov clips into the Media Storage.
In the 'Edit' page and I selected the appropriate .mov clip in the Media Pool.
In the timeline, I would select each timeline clip, right click it and selected 'Force Conform with Selected Media Pool Clip'. Because the original 1440 .mp4 clips have the same duration as 1920 .mov clips, Resolve would just replace it.

In my case, I had 3 .mov clips that were chopped up into about 20 timeline clips. I selected rawfootage1.mov in the Media Pool and right-click/clicked 'Force Conform with Selected Media Pool Clip' for all my rawfootage1.mov stuff. Then selected rawfootage2.mov and force-conformed the next set, and then again with rawfootage3.mov.

It exported just fine to 1920x1080. No black bars.

Overall, I would have liked to have been able to replace the clips entirely in the Media Storage page. That would have saved me a day and a half and a lot of distress. But I found a way nonetheless, that did not require me to re-edit everything with my new clips.

Probably would have been quicker and less image degradation to just do as Chris suggested and change the pixel aspect ratio of all the clips in the media pool, this automatically changes it for that clip on the timeline as well, so there would have been no need to re-edit. You can also highlight all the clips and change the pixel aspect for all the clips at once.

Hi Adam,

I tried some of those things that Chris suggested, before his post was approved (I was in a rush). Probably because I'm not familiar with video editing and this particular software, DVCPRO HD resulted in more black bars for me and further squishing.

In the future, I'll try to avoid 1440x1080 clips. If I can't, I'll try Chris' method with more attentive detail.

I think I see the problem with using the DVCPRO HD pixel aspect ratio. At 29.97fps it's assumed DVCPRO HD footage is 1280x1080, where at 25fps it's 1440x1080. Since your footage is 29.97 I guess it would have assumed the aspect was slightly different, resulting in thin black bars at top and bottom.

I think the 'Stretch frame to all corners' option would likely have worked best.
