Slow redrawing of thumbnails on timeline.

One of the major delays I have when using Resolve is that whenever I zoom in or out of the timeline, there is a pause of a few seconds while the thumbnails are redrawn on the timeline. Is there a way to speed this up? I don't know if it's that the generation of the thumbnails is genuinely a slow process, or if it is symptomatic of something else.

I have the same issue. I wonder if it's to do with re-drawing audio waveforms? I can zoom in/out more swiftly with just video tracks, but video/audio tracks become very sluggish during editing when zoomed in.
My machine is fast in other scenarios and I have no trouble editing and colouring RAW projects without transcoding, so it's frustrating to be waiting 2-3 seconds each time I make any small adjustments to a zoomed-in timeline.

Are you on 12.5?

Avid had a similar problem with Media Composer with very slow refreshes of the timeline due to redrawing the audio wave form until they cached it in Version 7. Not sure if this issue is related to Resolve.

In my case, it's definitely the thumbnails, rather than the waveform. It's slow even with the waveforms turned off, but if set it to not display thumbnails, the problem goes away.

When you set the timeline to not display thumbnails, markers don't display either.

Are these UHD clips on HD timeline?
What source codec?

Yes. They are a mixture of UHD and HD on an HD timeline. The codec is XAVC-S.

Ah, my guess is the CPU is very busy decoding the compressed xavc. If you make optimized media to dnx that will be faster.

Yes, it's clear that they are regenerating the thumbnails constantly. Not great for files with intraframe compression. Caching them would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look for Optimised media in the manual.

When I zoom the timeline, Resolve starts to re-generate all the clip thumbnails. It takes a lot of time. That makes it almost impossible to work in Resolve since it freezes the system.
I think thumbnails should be cached someway.
PS: "
Save Timeline Thumbnails With Project" and "
Optimized Media" don't help at all in my case.

Hey there,
since the topic not new, the exact same issues appears to me right now and I was hoping there is some new input I can try to solve this problem for me.
I would really love to see some thumbnails, but atm the only possibe way is to work complety without thumbnail, otherwise my pc feels like going down to super slow motion (same as video above).

I have no problem with the thumbnails in the timeline when zooming in and out. They redraw instantly. I have the thumbnails set to Film Strip View in the Timeline View Options.
As to that video, I would love to know why he's waving the curser about like that.

If you have h264/h265 as your source, it will take a bit.
I usually change the visualization method to show only first and last frame, it is instantaneous.
