Unusable after "Upgrading" to Windows 10 Pro

I've been holding out in upgrading to windows 10 as long as I could but did so today. And now, Resolve 12.5 is not even usable. Its beyond slow to do anything including opening/creating a project.

Setup
4700K i7
32gb Ram
GTX 970
4 Samsung 850 Evos

I'm hoping it something simple....Yes, i've rebooted, i've search and found a couple of things to try and nothing worked so far. Any help is appreciated! If you need more information, no problem.

I have almost identical hardware and 12.5 works perfectly on win 10 64bit. I'm not able to offer any specific suggestions except for checking the obvious.

After the upgrade did you then go back and install drivers for everything? The ones that Win 10 puts in are not usually very good so you should always re-install the motherboard drivers and any drivers for graphics cards etc

+1 Clean Install

I upgraded and it worked, but after doing a clean install I was amazed at how much faster DR ran.

Upgraded from what OS? And faster in what respect? Thanks.

The question about coming from which OS is pretty important. For instance, if you came from a 32bit version, without a clean install, there will be a number of old drivers to update. You could easily run into problems with that.

Upgrading often is also a good time to do some housecleaning anyway. And a few runs with something like CCleaner (to remove old registry entries) and some restarts, updating of drivers and repeated cleans can solve a number of problems.

If you did that weird online Win7/8 to Win10 "hot" upgrade, that's also a bit of a roll of the dice. It worked for me... kind of... but it was never completely stable. So when I built a new system, I started fresh.

There are so many reasons for poor performance after a major change, it's really difficult to point someone in a specific direction, but one place to start would be "How is everything else running after the upgrade?" If other programmes are running poorly, you can start to look into main system drivers, peripheral drivers, that kind of thing. The list, unfortunately, goes on and on.

+1 clean install.

really doesn't matter what you're coming from, in place upgrades generally work for 'most' common situations, but i've found that doing so for ANY nle software can prove fraught with weird side affects and really not worth the time and trouble sorting out.

if you want to take advantage of the free upgrade simply do an insitu install - thereafter you can do a clean install.

It's not clear whether this user saw a performance jump after upgrading from a prior OS to 10, or whether the system dragged on the initial W10 upgrade, and required a clean install to restore the original speed.

*That's* the question -- mine, anyway.

I was on Win7 64-bit. My renders were approximately 25% faster. There was a "sluggishness" to the system on the upgrade but it was "snappy" on the clean install. It didn't just affect Resolve, I also noticed an improvement in my Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

I'm sorry, I still don't follow. Is Resolve faster on W10 than W7?

I thought the system was very similar after the W10 upgrade, but the clean install gave me much better performance. Hope that helps.

My bad. Definitely faster on W10 for me with no changes to hardware.

Can anyone else confirm this observed improvement?

Unfortunately, in any given case, it could have other causes: the state of your Win7 installation, settings, etc.

Good point on the Win7 settings. Did you try a clean install?

I haven't noticed any degradation in Resolve over time -- beyond the increased demands since 12.x -- so the issue for me is whether an upgrade to 10 would buy me better performance than is possible under win7, generally, all else being equal.

From other reports, it looks like gaming performance is actually a bit slower on Win10, but that's not a great measure for Resolve.... Short of testing a clean install of Win10 --just the thought fills me with dread -- there's no way to know for sure, unless BMD reports on the matter or the results come in greater numbers.

Hi,

I did the upgrade free of W8.1 to W10 in 2015 and from the beginning I found that in most cases, the PC was more responsive but I have not made no benchmark.

After a year, I bought a license W10 Pro x64 and I did a clean install. Since I find that the system is very stable and runs a little faster but once you have installed all specific drivers W10 for my equipment. It's satisfying for waiting for a new PC soon.

Anyway, do a clean install can only do good to his PC, just to clean the registry. :)

You do know you could have just installed the Win 10 Pro and entered your Win 8.1 Pro number

Hi Adam,

Yes, i know of course, but as I will soon change materials, I know I need a personal license W10 X64 PRO. Currently it is based on the MAC adress and I will changed. So... :?

Not just the MAC address. I changed my motherboard and Windows stayed activated

I'm on Win 10 Home Premium 64bit. Is there any real measurable performance advantage to Win 10 Pro 64bit? From the specs, it just looks like you get additional Enterprise style tools...

Interesting to know that it is not only the MAC address. I'll revise my sources. Now as I have already purchased a license to be quiet, even after July 29, when the update will not be free w10: to follow.

Win 10 Home Premium 64bit VS Pro 64bit Win 10?
Not sure but apart from the amount of memory and virtualization, I don't see other real advantage.
Someone better?
