Audio cutting out during playback

Hello everyone,
thanks for taking the time to read this post.
I just started using DaVinci Resolve version 12.5 and everytime I play a preview of a media clip, the audio lasts for a second or two and then cuts out, then when I restart the playback the audio that I previously heard is gone, the only way to fix this is by restarting but even then I only get those two seconds of audio.
It does the same on all clips I have tried but all those clips play audio perfectly fine outside of DaVinci Resolve.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Jack.

I have observed this too, when trying to work in Resolve with underpowered hardware.
Which codec is your source and what's your hardware?

I am using an Intel i5 6600K overclocked to 4.3Ghz and an Nvidia GTX 1080.
I am also using Nvidia Shadowplay to record footage which uses H.264 codec.
thanks for your reply.

Well, your hardware should be sufficient, but which audio codec is your footage recorded in? You may need to transcode.

I have this issue right now. i've been working on this edit for a month now without problem and i have not changed anything major but noticed this just started happening. When playing inside resolve but also when exporting my file, this occurs in the film. audio just cuts off randomly. Any suggestions?

The video codec, the audio codec, the resolution, the frame rate, the processor speed, the GPU speed, and the drive speed will all have an effect on playback.
In general, WAV files (or BWF files) at 48kHz / 16-bit or 24-bit are the best choice for sound in post.

Yes but it has worked with no problems at all. I was just recoloring some of my clips and was just about to export the final delivery when i noticed this. Ive palyed this timeline 500times probably and even exporting a few samples earlier same day and it worked fine. Nothing has changed except few clips got colored and now its randomly cuts off audio in my timeline. If i play again it sometimes plays that part and cuts somewhere else. :/ so weird.

You say it happens with the exported film? That's not right.

I thought it was my computer being slow and just couldnt handle playback but yes, if i export, same thing occurs

What format do you use when exporting (both video and audio formats)?

im workin on 1080p25 prores hq files with wav(24) audio and exporting .h264. used the exact same settings many times when i deliverd already because i've exported maybe 10-15 versions of this so far. also i play back all the time inside the software. this is just a bug that started out of nowhere. i even have a few duplicated projekts from earlier, as i back up that way every now and then. even if i try to go back and play those timelines, this happens.
:/

I just realized my soundtrack never cuts out, only speeches. So im thinking its the denoiser from izotope thats causing this, perhaps my trial ran out. i havent checked this but im almost postive. Also, i tried de noise my soundtrack and bam, it randomly cuts here and there. Either its the trial thing or resolve just decided that its not able to handle the de noiser :/ i did google "Izotpe trial audio cuts off" etc but could not find anything. Ill look into it more and let you guys know.
EDIT: seems i installed it 30 days ago

EDIT: Trial Limitations
In Trial mode, RX 5 plug-ins will work without restriction for 30 days. After 30 days, the plug-ins will operate in Demo mode, and will insert silence at regular intervals. Please note that for the standalone version of RX 5, saving is disabled in both Trial and Demo modes.
My bad guys, dont mind my issue here! its solved

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I seem to have this precise same issue with the audio cutting out after a few seconds - and consistently.
Background story is a bit different though. I've just upgraded to the studio version of DaVinci Resolve version 17.3.1 (and updated at the same time). I doubt I have any trial software lurking, but has anyone had the same issue since the update?

Yes, this is driving me crazy. You should start a new thread though and I'll post there too. Does you audio cut out on left channel, then cut out on the right before cutting out completely, then return randomly?

Same issue here. Impossible to edit!
Anyone found a solution?

I'm suddenly having this issue as well today! Spent over 20 hours over the last 3 days editing a video, exporting and uploaded to youtube - no issues!
Now today, the audio will suddenly cut out on track 1. Audio waves are still there, and audio still plays on the original clip in the media pool.
I can create a new track, and move the same clip from track 1 to track 2, and the audio will resume working for a short period, then the same thing happens. Sometimes I get a blip of audio come through but overall continues being silent.
I've tried everything and clearly this isn't a setting or some other simple thing suddenly being changed. I can create a new project and it will do the same, work for a little bit and then cut out.
Makes no sense and is driving me crazy too. Would LOVE a solution ASAP - probably going to download a different program at this point, I don't have time to waste.

So, I tried again with the video I was using recently, and I can't seem to trigger the issue. I'm no tech wizard when it comes to computer/file specs, but I've attached a picture of the properties of the two separate videos.
The one on the right (bit rate - 127 kbps + sample rate - 44.100 kHz) is the one I worked with for many hours, and never had an issue with.
The one on the left (bit rate - 64 kbps + sample rate - 22.050 kHz) is the one that keeps bugging out and being silent. I can also go into "Edit", double click on the audio file, and it will play when brought up to the media player, while the track at the bottom is still silent.

You have two different frame rates for video and two audio sample rates, at least one of which is very uncommon for video use. I'd at least convert both to uncompressed 48 kHz audio and try again.

Ricky Ricardo wrote:Yes, this is driving me crazy. You should start a new thread though and I'll post there too. Does you audio cut out on left channel, then cut out on the right before cutting out completely, then return randomly?
I'm having the exact issue too and it also goes silent in one channel and then the other, and then won't come back until some random time later and only for a few seconds before cutting out again. I've had this happen in both version 17 and 18 (I upgraded to 18 to see if it was resolved but no luck). I'm on the Linux version. Back when I used version 16 I didn't have this issue.
It seems like a buffer bug because sometimes I'll be playing a clip and audio from somewhere else in the project will be synched with it. Even when I scrub, the incorrect audio will still be synched up. Only when I move to a different part of the project or switch modes does it change the audio.
Once the audio dies, I can go a full minute before it comes back. It makes editing very difficult.
Admittedly, my media disk is a slow sloth but this problem happens even with media in memory and no disk access taking place.
SystemOS: Linux Mint 21
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8-core, 16-thread)
RAM: 64 GB (Resolve mem limited to 40 GB, Fusion to 12 GB)

Audio: System audio (ALSA), USB to Mackie ProFX mixer (Playback buffer: auto)
Media disk: Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632 (slow, budget spare drive for the space)
MediaContainer: MXF OP1A
Video codec: DNxHD 290 1080p 59.94
Audio codec: Linear PCM WAV 48kHz 16-bit

This sounds like a similar issue to what I'm currently getting.
However, for me it seems to be MXF files that have come out of a Sony camera - in this case both FX9 and FS7.
I've got a project I'm currently working on which cuts out the audio from an FS7 but works fine with the audio from an A7S (MP4 files) - both on the same timeline. The main difference between the two is the A7S is 16 bit audio and the FS7 is 24 bit. The timeline is 32 bit.
Oddly, if I go from the Edit window to the Fairlight window, it seems to play back much better. But it is starting to get infuriating - luckily I haven't got a client in the edit suite with me!
I'm running a Mac Pro 3.2GHz 16 Core Intel Xeon, with 192GB RAM.
Resolve is Studio 18.0.4.

If that video is H.265 10 bit 4:2:2, I'd see the problem in your hardware.
XEONs have no hardware decoding.

My files are H264. The XEON should be handling those OK, shouldn't they?

The bit depth of 16, 24, or 32 is not important. It is the sample rate that counts. Video normally uses 48k, but Resolve will sample rate convert 44.1 on the fly. 22.050Khz is a different matter. As far as I know Resolve will not convert this to 48k so the sound cutting out is Resolve trying to keep it in sync. The best solution would be to transcode to 48k using either Handbrake or Shutter Encoder, both of which are free.

Hi,
Newbie here, working on first Reslove project and wondering if there are there any more suggestions regarding this topic?
I am trying to edit the audio for a short film now, foley, SFX and score. And everything is glitchy, some audio is delayed, some completely cuts out for a few seconds at a time, and I can't figure out why. Editing is not possible until I can fix this. The original audio from camera synced with the video clips on import, works fine but is not usable.
The audio samples that give trouble are raw Wav recorded at 16bit 48k.
The footage and project and playback are at 25fps
what else is there to adjust?
Strangely, I dropped in a couple MP3 tracks at 256kbps and they both work fine.
Version: Studio 18.1 build 16
System: Ryzen5 5600x, RX6700, 32gb DDR4 ram
Win 10

Exactly the same issue here. I've reported it to Blackmagic support. Audio randomly cuts out when playing back clips on the timeline.
Footage shot on FX9. UHD, XAVC-I, 29.97 fps.
System specs:
Mac pro 2019: 16 core, DUO W6800x (64gb) graphics cards, 384gb ram, accusys gamma 12 120tb media drive, nvme cache drive (8tb), SSD internal drive (for operating system, applications).

I have the same problem on the 18.2 (or whatever is before 18.5).
AMD Ryzen 3600x, AMD 5600XT (Same as someone already posting here).
My workaround right now is to create brand new mini timeline with couple of the edited clips to solve the issue.
Let's see if it will work for all the sections.

Same issue here with Resolve Version 18. Audio would play for a few seconds and quit. The video ran fine though. My video clips were from and old cell phone camera and the frame rates were variable around 28-29FPS. I ran the clips through a video converter and converted them to a consistent 30FPS/MP4. This solved the audio issue. Unfortunately, the video converter I use is a free-bee without a remembered home-page. Any converter is worth a try.

I had the exact same issue. Someone above gave a hint though, so I hope this works for others. In the Edit screen I have the same audio cutting out when I start / stop and jog around; however, in Fairlight the audio works fine. I discovered that if I disable Track FX in Fairlight for my main track (in my case, A1) and then go back to Edit, the audio no longer cuts out. I hope this helps others.

I had the same issue for days and it drove me insane to the point I downloaded Premiere to switch back (which I still might do).
The thing that "fixed" it for me was to export my composition as a WAV and re-import it into the project, and then completely disable the other tracks AND their effects. It was something native that was causing it for me, because the only thing I did to the tracks was put a left and right pan on two tracks, and a compressor on the bus. Muting and deactivating the old clips didn't help either; I had turn off the sends to the bus as well.
I think it might have worked to just delete the original 3 tracks, but I wanted to keep them as a back-up.
Anyway, I'm super hesitant to want to begin a new project with this bug alive. I wasted so many hours (days) trying to find a solution and just trying to work through it.

I am having a similar issue with timeline playback. Wondering if there's a proxy and or cache setting to sync auto bitrate?
My video clips are h.265 10bit w/ 32bit 48khrz audio (GoPro Hero 10). I additionally, have wave files captured in resolve at 24bit 48khrz. My issue arises when I enable "Voice Isolation" and or "Dialog Leveling". If I disable those then there's no dropping of audio in timeline playback. It also delays playback by like 10 or 15 seconds. Super annoying. I can use the jog wheel on my speed editor, but cannot press play. Is making it almost impossible to edit audio.
This has put a hamper on my workflow and I'd love to figure out if there's a workaround. My system is a bit older but more than cuts the mustard. Observing Task Manager there's plenty of headroom in the machine resources leading to think the editing machine isn't necessarily the bottleneck.
Intel i7-6950x 10 Cores 3Ghrz; 64GB ram; 1TB m.2 main drive; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti; Running Windows 10 Ultimate and Resolve 18.6 (paid version)
My clips are on a Raid 5 NAS connected via dual 10Gbit lines (although, editing machine only does 1Gbit ~ I see transfer speeds as high as 250mbit). Then I have proxies and cache locally in editing machine on a 1TB SSD.

Replying to my last post to update thread. Seems the Fairlight engine in my scenario didn't favor my hardware or something in version 18. I updated to version 19 which plays back much better, if not perfectly, without adding the Fairlight hardware acceleration card.
