Replacing a clip in the timeline with all effects - how?

PostTue Oct 11, 2016 10:07 am

In Premiere there is a very neat function where you can replace clips with all effects and settings that are allready in the timline. You just mark both clips and hold the ALT key and drag the new clip over the one in the timeline. Then the clip in the timeline is replaced allready with all effects and transitions.

Is there a similar procedure in Davinci? I know you can mark the clip with "x" and then overwrite but this destroys all effects and transitions. Any better way of doing this?

Thanks

You may use “Force Conform…” commands either available in the context menu for the clip own the media pool or for the instance of the clip in the timeline.

or, you can use [take selector] as an alternative.

"Replace edit" works the same way as it does in Premiere, but instead of "alt+drag", use F11 from either the media pool or the source viewer, or drag the replacement clip from the source viewer or media pool to the "replace" overlay in the program viewer. Don't mark the timeline clip -- just position the timeline cursor where you want the replacement to occur.

If you're not starting the replacement on the first frame of the replacement clip or you're backtiming the replacement clip from any given frame in the timeline clip, set cursor in-points (not "hard" in-points)in the source viewer and timeline as needed, then F11.

Fantastic!

Thank you all for your suggestions - I'll try it out. That is a function that I was desperately missing in Davinci.

Cheers

Dear John!

Where is exactly this: "to the "replace" overlay in the program viewer"?

Thanks!

Is there a way to replace multiple clips at once? I want to replace 10 identical (aside from opacity) clips in the timeline with a different movie.

There is a gesture: if you have lets say 10 clips in video 1 and 10 clips in video 2 with the same length, you can lasso and control+overlap them down and it will keep all the metadata and swap the media.

thanks Walter, that was incredibly helpful. I just had a bunch of clips with Scales/Transforms & Dynamic Zooms (which don't seem copy-able) that needed to reference different source clips with every attribute intact.

I'll just write this here because I'll forget again.

In Edit view, open Media pool on the left.

On the Timeline, select the replacable clip.

On the Media pool, select the replacing clip.

No drag-n-drop

On the timeline, above it are symbols, like Selection mode (cursor), trim blade. Seventh (7.) from the left on mine is Replace Clip (F11). (F11 won't work on mac). Click this icon.

It will. Just check the box "Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys…" in System Preferences>Keyboard.

Actually that's one of the first things to do when setting up a new Mac intended for doing any meaningful work.

That isn't all you have to do. F11 is bound to 'show desktop' by default on a Mac. You need to change that as well (I think it's a control center shortcut).

Unfortunately Nothing works in Resolve as in Premiere...
F11 and replace drag to program view do not respect scaling positioning and edit points...
They only way that works is to select replace clip from media pool and choose another file from Finder... Ridiculous. Otherwise one has t set in and out points copy and paste attributes etc. Such a hassle for an easy thing.

F11 in resolve does respect color grade, sizing, edit points and FX applied.

it does not ONLY if the clip has a different aspect ratio/geometry, otherwise it will do it as mentioned.

@evanfotis - I agree, it would be great if there was the equivalent of Premiere's alt-click drag to respect in points, out points, etc. One of the only things I miss from Premiere.

what work for me is before switching do a copy (ctrl+c) and after switching (with F11/or the button) right click the clip - paste attributes (alt+v).
