Fades on overclip highlights remove my color FX

PostFri Nov 18, 2016 7:47 pm

If I try to fade out (or fade in) a clip that contain color effect with over-clipped highlights, the fade transition remove my over-clipped color effect.

I want that my over-clipped highlights effect stay present during my fades.

What's the solution ?

You could get the clip without a fade, then do the fade as a transition in the edit page (which would come after color in the Node operations). Or you could do a keyframed fade-out at the very end of the node tree, after clips.

Be warned that fading a clipped exposure looks funky even under the best circumstances. (This is a technical term.)

Try one of the soft clip curves in the Master Curves window, putting them in the last node of the tree.

I try to fades my clip with over-clipped highlights without success with those methods:

- With fades in Edit page
- With Inspector/Composite/Opacity in Edit page
- With clipping down the highlights in Color page
- With key output opacity with an alpha output in Color page

I find that the only solution is to create a compound clip, do the cache and now my dissolve works.
I have some trouble with my cache, I have to investigate.

If you add a node at the end of your clip's node graph and set the "HS" (High Soft) control to '1.0', then the fades in the edit page will maintain the clipped highlights.

**Edit** This will only force clipping on the image being processed in the node graph. If you are working in ACES, RCM, or with an Output LUT there is processing after the node graph.

It should actually work with any of the soft clip settings changed. Changing any of these will enable "Soft Clipping" and apply the values to the image.

This actually makes me think it would be good to separate the High and Low Soft Clip settings so that one could use low soft without clipping highlights or vice-versa.
