GeForce Experience audio issues (with sample files) RESOLVED

PostWed Dec 21, 2016 8:56 pm

Hi all,

I've recently downloaded DaVinci Resolve to edit gaming videos and stock footage.

When I edit my stock footage I have no audio issues at all. However, when I try making gaming videos, I encounter a quite annoying audio issue.

I capture videos using NVidia GeForce experience. The videos come with audio and HitFilm recognises them correctly. The issue arises when I try to open one of these videos in Resolve.

How to recreate the error:
When I select one of these captures in Media Storage and click play, the audio works only for the first 5 seconds and then stops.

Example file (in my public OneDrive folder):
https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjDqx4kGOytfgVSSM17poFYh0HxT

This error happens only on my screen capture files.

Any help will be highly appreciated.  :)

My system is: Skylake i7-6700K, 32 GB RAM, GTX 1080 and a fresh (clean) install of Windows 10 and all chipset / audio / video drivers.

NB:
The original title of this post was: GeForce Experience video audio issues (with sample file)
I have changed the title as a resolution was found.

I have just added another video file with a screen capture of what's happening on my machine.

In this new video that I uploaded here https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjDqx4kGOytfgVSSM17poFYh0HxT alongside the original you can see that I:
1) Load Resolve
2) Drag the Witcher 3 video into Resolve
3) Go to Edit and drag the new video into the timeline
4) Click play and audio stops at the 34 second mark of the video and never comes back.

The file plays perfectly on a iMac 5k, Resolve 12.5.4
Resolve 19.1.2 Mac OSX 15.3 Sequoia, Monitor 3G, FSI SDI grading monitor.
Mac M1 Studio Max 32GB

It's AVC Coding in an MP4 container -- not a good format for Resolve. It's also 59.94fps, which is pretty demanding. I would convert it to an easier format to handle, like ProRes, which you can do by exporting within QuickTime.

Be warned that a lot of these goofy gaming formats are variable-framerate, which presents a lot of problems for editing and color tools. If it's all at one framerate, it works fine (aside from the crappy 8-bit color bit depth).

Having looked at the first file it does have a variable frame-rate which could be causing an issue. If I load the file into GV Edius it plays audio all the way through but the audio stutters, probably caused by the changes in the frame-rate of the video.

Just converted it to ProRes using ClipToolz V2 (free if you can still find the download) and that then works fine

Hi all and especially to Adam Simmons for pointing me in the right direction.

I have now resolved my issue and I'll share my findings. I'll also change the subject of my original post to aid forum searching.

My issue was with variable frame rates and I found a good fix.

I downloaded OBS (Open Broadcaster Software from: ) https://obsproject.com/
It's a free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. They've got both a Windows and a Mac version.

OBS has more control on what's recorded and how it is recorded. For example you have control over FPS, audio and video codecs and audio sources. You can also appoint your own keyboard hotkeys. It's quite an impressive piece of software.

I've setup OBS and created a new video capture that I've uploaded here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjDqx4kGOytfgVSSM17poFYh0HxT
NB: The new video is set in daytime for easier spotting and it's called OBS recording 2016-12-24

OBS setup:
1) In the main screen I've created a new source for Game Capture (left all settings at default values)
2) Went into OBS settings (button above the exit button on the right) and then I've set the following.
3) Output
a) Recording path: A folder on one of my drives
b) Recording Quality: Indistinguishable
c) Recording format: mp4 (mov also works well)
d) Encoder: Hardware NVENC (I've got a GTX 1080 which will take care of that)
4) Audio
a) Sample Rate: 48khz
b) Channels: Stereo
5) Video
a) Base resolution: 1920x1080
b) Output resolution: 1920x1080
c) Common FPS Values: 30
6) Hotkeys
a) Start Recording: Alt + F9
b) Stop Recording: Alt + F9
