Weird: LUT on Video-Monitor affecting Video in Timeline ?

Hi,

having created a calibration-LUT for the video-monitor attached to my Decklink-Card I found a behavior that's IMHO a bit weird.

The Video Monitor LUT also affects the Data / Clips in the timeline / color-page instead of only correcting the Video Output to the Monitor.

Let me show:

I've set a power-window on a clip, just on the hand of the actor for viewing the skin-tones:

The Scopes for this picture:

You can see, the skin-tones are a bit off, but the grey of the masked-out part is straight clean grey, like it should be.

And the settings on the colormanagement page of Project-Settings:

No LUTs are set.

Now the weird thing, I don't understand:

(cont'd from first posting) ...

Now the weird thing, I don't understand:

I set the 3D Video Monitor LUT for correcting the Video-Monitor at the Decklink-Card:

That's the only change i did.

But now the scopes also show the color off.
You can see, the grey is no more stright grey, but it's going to red:

Also the GUI-Preview is affected from the Video-Monitor LUT:

As far as I understand, the 3D Video Monitor LUT in the project settings should only correct the output via Decklink to the video-monitor so the video-monitor shows grey, where the clip is grey and the scopes show gey.
It should correct the video-monitor to match the monitor to the scopes and the clip-pic-data.

But with the behavior of resolve shown above, the correction will never match the scopes.
In addition, it will cause to do a wrong color-correction because the Video-Monitor LUT will mislead the colorist while looking at the scopes.
With this behavior IMHO it's not only useless but it's dangerous to set Video Monitor LUT.

I don't understand:
Is it a bug or a feature?

Or do I have to set any other settings to get the correct behavior of Resolve?

Thanks for your help.
Peter

Hey Peter,

I've tried and tried to replicate your issue but I cannot get my Resolve (free) to behave like that. My scopes works as expected - no change regardless of the monitor LUT. I'll keep trying tho.

Have you tried setting up another project and trying the same test?

not much help sorry but at least I can confirm it shouldn't be working like yours

Hi Jeff,

i found out a workaround that was discribed in the other thread that popped up parallel to this one.

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=51358

When "Hide UI overlays for optimum performance" is set to on, the issue appears.
If "Hide UI overlays for optimum performance" is set to off, the scopes are showing correctly.

How is it set in your Resolve?

Thanks
Peter

good catch Peter. Mine is set to off, and if I turn it on, bam, the scopes are indeed affected by the monitor LUT.

No idea if it should be this way and why you ever want the scopes to be affected by a monitor LUT - but then I'm not a colorist so my knowledge is a little "limited". Maybe drop BMD an email or message Dwaine Maggart directly (he's great and finding answers) and see if this is in fact how it should work.

glad you can use a monitor LUT now :)

cheers
Jeff

Hi,

I opened a support call.
The support of BMD could replicate the issue, reported that the actual behaviour indeed is weird and they reported it to the development team.

Seems they will try to correct this.

Thanks
Peter
