Bouncing this old topic...
I have a GoPro Hero 5 Session and noticed that while full range is what MP4 clips from this cam seem to work best in Resolve 16.2, I am still puzzled by the fact that:
1) Mediainfo reports these two lines:
Color range: Limited
colour_range_Original: Full
2) Resolve 'auto' equals video levels, which causes the scale to be expanded to 0-1023 (on the scopes set to 'video levels'; the project target output is video levels, ); manually forcing 'full' in clip's attributes constrains the range within 64-940.
As a comparison (since I'm still only discovering Resolve's intricacies in different scenarios), clips from a Canon DSLR (reported as Color range: Full by Mediainfo) are set as Full with 'Auto' by Resolve and hence constrained to 64-940 in the scopes, as expected.
Also, the GoPro H5 clips are seen as Full Range by Avid MC, and automatically get a default 'full to video levels' adapter to match a BT.709 project.
Question #1: what do these 2 color range entries (with contradicting info?) mean for the GoPro clip ? Which one is monitored by Resolve when importing the media ? 'Color range: Limited' I guess (hence the video levels set by default), but this seems the unwise choice, per this thread ?
Question #2: does anyone know for sure what the real range is for MP4 clips shot by 'older' GoPro cameras like the H5 Session ?
Question #3: for easiest editing of clips from these two cams together, isn't it best to set both to 'full range' (overriding the default set by Resolve for the GoPro clips), so I have a consistent range for both cams to start with ? Or is it more accurate to keep the GoPro clips as 'Video' (or 'auto') and reduce the range of these clips on the color page to match those of the Canon DSLR (as a first step in matching the clips)? I would think these two approaches will yield the same result, especially considering the limited 8-bit resolution of the clips mapped to 32-bit float, but I may be wrong.
