Converting the file to prores actually works, but why is it ignoring the h.264 under Linux only? Am I missing any dependencies for that? (I'd expect some kind of message in that case.)

Prores and dnxhr are your only choices. Even with Resolve Studio, since it doesn't support aac/mp3 on Linux, you're going to have to transcode audio to wav format "pcm16e" (unless you're shooting double system sound and slating). Here's a tutorial for using ffmpeg to transcode dhxhd and dnxhr, which includes support for 4k/10bit. I think you might have better luck with dnxhr and ffmpeg than ProRes, because the ffmpeg tool sometimes outputs ProRes files that make Apple tools like Final Cut complain.

mp3 (not aac) is supported in linux since DVR17.
And h264 needs studio.

I usually just extract the audio from my mp4(h264/aac) into a .flac next to it. Fast enough to just do the audio and keep the video as the original stream.

Anyone knows how to activate studio 17.1 in Zorin? Install worked great with MakeResolveDeb but I can't activate my license. Says contact support

I'm using jack on 20.04 with the Low Latency official HWE kernel 5.8. It seems pretty good. But I don't use a firewire audio interface, so I'm not in your boat there. Have a Zoom H6 and an old Creative E-MU 0404, both of which have XLR interfaces and work well enough for my limited recording needs.

Anyway, let's assume there's a kernel or library or whatever in Ubuntu 20.10 you really need for jackd. And for that reason, the AMDGPU-Pro installer won't work. There's a file:

/etc/os-release

Which you could edit to trick the AMDGPU-Pro installer into installing. But you may have to run one of the older kernels for it to build the specified kernel bits for their Pro driver. The proprietary GL driver is terrible too. It's slow and doesn't work with common software like OBS and Natron. (No OBS is a deal killer for me).

This is really not the best way to do this. You're much better off using the FOSS driver and MesaGL. Then copying the proprietary OpenCL and OpenGL libs somewhere, and using that wrapper script to start resolve. This gives you MesaGL running normally. I do have the proprietary OpenCL libs installed normally using AMDGPU-Pro, though I think you can get away with installing the latest ROCm-4 packages and then using the proprietary GL libs.

BUT. No matter how you approach this, you're in for a nightmare tweaking session. All of us using Resolve regularly ought to just bite the bullet and buy NVIDIA cards. As obnoxious as that is, especially now with insane GPU prices. I have a VEGA FE 16GB and when it works it's great with Resolve. But more often than not, I've had endless driver problems due to AMD's insanity.

That said, you can get it to mostly work. With the caveat that the Fairlight bug will still bite you. And I have no idea if or when that will get fixed. Seems like it's a driver problem and not Blackmagic's fault. That said, they may need to code a workaround just to get Fairlight to work right. Because who knows if or when AMD will ever fix their "Pro" Linux driver.

Thanks for your answer. I did (at least I think I did it properly...) the workaround of launching DVR via a script after having extracted the drivers as said in the thread. And... the opening is stucked on the fairlight startup screen with DVR 17...

If I remove the 20.40 drivers then I will loose the possibility to use openCL in other apps... Cruel world. The thing is that I just did an installation of openCV on amdgpu openCL that took me a looooong time and it works great, specially with the retiming slowmovideo software which is really a jewel (never got so clean optical flow slowdown retiming within DVR and it doesn't freeze my system like timewarp, or speedwarp I don't remember the exact name, on DVR and I use a lot of retiming (I'm not doing "classical" video editing, I'm working on interfacing puredata and video). So I have to make a choice... And as the sound and slowmovideo is really a important point for me, I think I will go with Blender for a while, and if I need stuff that only DVR can do I will reboot on MacOS (advantage of the Hackintosh... I can boot on windows, OSX or Ubuntu) to do the job. That is sad because I love DVR.

As you said regarding the price of the GPU (when you can find some...) going to Nvidia is a "Rockfeller caprice", and I'm not Rockfeller... Anyway I think that there is no way to run Nvidia cards on MacOS Big Sur (at least on a hackintosh), so I'm a bit stuck on MAD (sorry AMD).

Are you on Ubuntu 20.04-2 or 20.04-1 ? because I didn't manage to install 20.45 on 20.04-2 (the -2 is the one available for download).

And yes, I don't undersand why, but firewire (FFADO driver) sound devices (at least my MOTU) is not recognized with ubuntu-control on 20.04, and I tried everything to have it work with qjackctl but no success. I don' know why.

I don't know who is the bad guy in the story, but there is one. Or maybe a side effect of the virus, who knows ? I hope that all of that will be solved soon. But as 20.10 isn't a LTS version I'm not shure that AMD will do the job before the new LTS version.

Oh i did comment here a while ago about the registration issues(with studio not sticking) on opensuse leap. with 17 / 17.1 it works fine now. The update available check doesn't work but I don't care about that. We'll see how long it lasts.

Hello! I'm trying to get DaVinci Resolve 17 installed, and it seems to be crashing on startup. I know Ubuntu isn't officially supported, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

System Information:
OS: Ubuntu 20.10
CPU: Intel i7-6700K
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti (2GB, driver version 460.67)
RAM: 32GB DDR4

DaVinci Resolve 17.1.0.0024 was installed through a Deb package created using makeresolvedeb_1.4.5_multi.sh

The Problem
Here's a recording of what's going on:
Image

Basically, every time I start it up, I get a popup saying "DaVinci Resolve could not find CUDA capable GPUs. Please review the GPU drivers and GPU configuration under preferences". I click to update the configuration, and when I try to do so, it says "Please add at least one media storage volume" and crashes. I tried adding a media storage volume before saving the config and it still crashed, so I don't think it's causing the problem.

Here's a copy of the ResolveDebug.txt log:

Am I the only one who needs input method here? I know it might be optional for English speakers, but there are still users using Chinese or Japanese, and the lack of input method support is really a pain.

@Bryce, most things seems to be in order but it looks like you have quite a few old driver packages that has been removed but not purged. You should be able to purge all those packages from the previous dpkg printouts that are marked "rc" in the left most column. They are removed but have files left behind. That can sometimes cause trouble. The purge command should fix this.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove <package name> --purge
Also, I'm not sure if the GTX 750 is fully compatible with Resolve 17 CUDA. Anyone here tested this?

Unfortunately, Resolve 17 still crashes on startup with the same error. It very well could be the case that my GTX 750TI just isn't compatible. In fact, I actually just found a post with someone who had a similar problem on a 2GB GTX 750 here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=129676&p=704035&hilit=+GTX+750+#p704035

The post mentions a log stating "No Nvidia GPU is auto selected as decode and encode device due to minimum memory requirement". Now I don't seem to be getting that in any of my logs, but I wouldn't be surprised If I have the same problem since my 750TI has the same amount of VRAM. The guy who posted it also mentioned that his GTX 750 worked with Resolve on Windows. Not sure if there's a way to confirm if a lack of VRAM is to blame or if there's workaround to get it working on Linux, but I figured I'd mention it.

Worst comes to worst, I'll buy a new graphics card once the prices come back down. Thanks for all of your help!

Resolve 16.2.7 and higher requires an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA Compute Capability of 3.5 or higher.

The GTX 750Ti has 5.0 Compute Capability. So there is no issue with the card from that standpoint.

The CUDA wiki has a handy chart of the compute capability of various NVIDIA cards:

Thanks for mentioning this! I was using an older version from last week. Not sure if it was addressed in the recent update, or if reinstalling after purging the old drivers fixed it, or if luck was just on my side this time, but it's actually working now!

Linux Mint 20.1 Cinammon; GTX1070

Installation went smoothly without any issue but.. I do not have a preview when I import any file like in included screenshot. I just mention that DaVinci Resolve IMHO properly also found my graphic card.

Any ideas?

I promise that when I solve it will write short (I guess) tutorial how to make it working on Linux Mint.

I look for in logs and found that:

For video: h264 is only supported in the Studio (paid) version on linux.
For audio: aac is just plain not supported at all on linux.

What I usually do for these kind of source is extract and compress audio as a separate FLAC file.
(and I have the paid version so the video works just fine).

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostSat Apr 17, 2021 5:27 pm

Hello!

I've installed DaVinci Resolve (17.1.1) on Ubuntu (20.04.2).
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz × 4
GPU: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 840M] / GeForce 840M/PCIe/SSE2

The first time it crushed while launching. I updated the Nvidia drivers. Now it starts and the projects window works fine but I can see only a part of the new window when I open a proyect and I can't drag or scale it. I'm also finding some troubles to import files. Resolve dosen't show the video and audio of the imported clips. It also crush if i switch to a external monitor (I'm using a laptop).

Here's a screenshot of what I see when I open a project and import a clip.

And here is some information you might find useful.

1. I run Resolve from a prompt and this is the output:
Code: Select all

I think all the problems are related to the GPU but I can't find a way to solve them.
I'd be very thankfull to anyone who could help me.

Your screen resolution is just too small ... you need a full HD 1080p monitor at minimum.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

Has anyone ever managed to install DaVinci Resolve on Linux in such a way, that
1. the crash reporter can send its reports?
2. collaboration can be enabled successfully?

Thanks to the AUR package of archlinux and Daniel Tufvesson's makeresolvedeb I've been able to install Davinci Resolve Studio 17 and 17.1.1 on Archlinux and Debian Bullseye. Basic usage is fine, I can edit a project exported from another Windows PC. Connecting to a PostgreSQL Database works too, even if no local IP but a DNS name is supplied and the DNS record is pointing to the public IP of an off-site server. So in principle Davinci Resolve Studio can access the internet and no firewall is installed / activated / ...

Nevertheless, DaVinci Resolve Studio seems to forget completely about its capability of reaching the internet in the two cases mentioned above.

In case 1, the crash reporter complains: "Unable to connect. Please check your network connectivity and try again". I haven't figured out yet what and how it wants to connect.

In case 2, chatting does not work and after some seconds, "Cannot Enable Collaboration" "Please ensure that the machines are not connected using a VPN and that DaVinci Resolve Studio is not being blocked by the system firewall" pops up. The machines that should collaborate are on the same subnet and can reach each other in all other applications.
According to netstat, the difference between enabling and disabling collaboration consists in resolve listening (or not listening) on 0.0.0.0:50059, tcp. Using Wireshark I don't see any suspicious packets, that look like one machine trying to connect the other...

Ok, now I can answer question 2 myself: Collaboration on Linux is possible :)

Technical details as those posted by Dwaine Maggart here (viewtopic.php?f=36&t=131547&hilit=+collaboration#p713013) should be presented way more prominent...

To check, which client IPs are stored in the Database, one could execute the following on the postgres Server (Debian Buster in my case, usernames might differ on other distros/setups) to connect to THENAMEOFYOURDATABASE and query the Client IPs:
Code: Select all
sudo -u postgres psql
\c THENAMEOFYOURDATABASE
select "ClientAddr", "Name" from "Sm2SysIdEntry";

Bad example (same, NATed public address):
Code: Select all
 ClientAddr  |      Name
-------------+-----------------
 1.234.56.78 | btp9kd
 1.234.56.78 | enc9
             | DESKTOP-AQI7951

Good example (unique addresses on the same subnet):
Code: Select all
 ClientAddr  | Name
-------------+------
 10.20.40.49 | enc9
 10.20.40.48 | enc8

So now only the crash-reporter's connectivity problem remains...

Good find Alexandra. I believe a site-to-site VPN setup is the best choice for reliable remote collaborative workflow. It would be nice if Resolve had the option of presenting a custom IP address to the other clients to make clients behind NAT reachable. Even customizing the local collaboration port would be useful in case of multiple clients behind NAT.

Regarding the crash reporter, I don't think it has ever worked out of the box under Linux.
I usually just disable it in the config file.
Code: Select all
CrashReport.Enable = 0
CrashReport.AutoSend = 0
There is the possibility to setup crash reporter over SMTP I think but I don't know how useful that is.
Code: Select all
CrashFeedback.FromEmail = my.email@mycompany.tld
CrashFeedback.ToEmail = resolve.admin@mycompany.tld
CrashFeedback.SMTPServer = mysmtpserver.mycompany.tld
CrashFeedback.ProgramName = Resolve

Hi Daniel,
thanks for confirming that its common for the crash reporter not to work out of the box.

Still I find it hard to believe that DaVinci Resolve is shipped with a crash reporter that is intentionally enabled by default but broken.

Maybe someone from BMD can comment or give some hints?

Hello,
I'm having an issue similar to what Francisco Javier had a bit above. I'm running DaVinci Resolve 17.1.1 on Arch which I'm aware isn't supported, but I would still appreciate any support.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (12) @ 3.600GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

The image he posted of what it looks like when he tries to view an imported videos is the exact same view I get. I'm attaching a log I exported from the app.

Your video is H264 video with AAC audio.
* H264 is only supported in the paid version on linux.
* AAC is plain just not supported under linux

Hi All,

I've made a quick build script and spec sheet for Fedora that allows DR17 to run using amdgpu-pro OpenGL and OpenCL without interfering with the open source mesa drivers:

https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/rpm- ... pencl.spec

Tested DR 17 and DR 17 studio on both a 6900 XT and a 5500 XT.

It should be as simple as cloning the repo, running ./install, rebooting, then running DR with the amdgporun command, like so:

./install
reboot
amdgporun /opt/resolve/bin/resolve

Notes:
-The reboot is needed for DR to recognize the OpenCL driver
-All of the libraries are dumped into an /opt/amdgpu-pro-opencl folder, which does not override any system libraries
-The amdgporun script loads the necessary libraries with environment variables.
-The reason for this package is because the pro OGL driver is needed for video playback, and OCL driver needed for thumbnails and OpenCL functionality.

Hello,

Since an upgrade from DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.2.8 to 17.2, I've lost H264 encoding inside MP4 container. It starts and fails immediately. I'm using Centos 8.3 with a RTX 3090 (recommended nVidia driver by Blackmagic). Any ideas?

By the way, there's still no possibility to encode any audio stream with the MP4 container. I know AAC isn't supported but it could be another audio codec.

Other annoying bug: the orange cursor from the timeline gets often stick. The workaround is to enable/disable dual screen.

And as I already said here, Centos top window doesn't update the project title name after "DaVinci Resolve Studio". It always displays the first opened project (until a software relaunch of course).

Thanks.

Which recommended driver are you using?

It needs to be at least 460.56.

Concerning the upgrade from DR 17.1.1-1 to 17.2-1 on Manjaro (Arch) Linux

According the Arch User Repository (AUR). Since URLS are not allowed here simply search "Davinci Resolve Studio AUR"

It is suggesting you add "chmod +x" to the line "./${_installer_binary}" which should be line 121 of the PGKBUILD
making it "chmod +x ./${_installer_binary}"

This does not work and only introduces new error on line 123. "cd squashfs-root" is not a recognized location.

At this point I will wait until an new stable studio build is enabled, last update was May 15, 2021.

@Lucius: I did a yum update on my CentOS 8.3 drive (which had NVIDIA 450.80.02, been a while since I last used it), and it installed NVIDIA 460.80, along with the 200 other updates.

On my GTX 1080 system, I have no issue rendering to MP4 H.264 or H.265 with Resolve Studio 17.2 and NVIDIA 460.80.

I'm rendering an HD 24 FPS timeline to HD 24FPS. Is that what you were doing?

I doubt your issue is related to the 460.73 driver, but maybe try an update, just in case.

I can say I've had issues with h264/h265 direct encode from resolve using nvidia 2070 super. It's not all the time, on some (most ?) it works fine, but on some it fails probably due to some bad interaction with some fusion or some hw decoding of the source footage, no clue ... Now I just render to mezzanine codec and use ffmpeg to do the final encode.

Would you be able to try again with a RTX 3090? I've also noticed I can't play .r3d files without the GPU support enabled in the preferences. It was not the case in the version 16. I'd like to free up the GPU to let the 64 cores from my GPU working.

I wish I had an RTX 3090.

I'll double check with an RTX 8000.

What Red GPU support do you have enabled?

I have no issues playing Red files with just Debayer selected for the Red GPU selection. And you really do want to use at least that.

Or are you saying you have to have both Decompression and Debayer selected?

Tested Resolve 17.2 Studio on CentOS 8.3 with an RTX 6000 card. Closest I have to an RTX 3090.

MP4 render of an 8K Red clip on an HD timeline in both H.264 and H.265 work.

Red clips play back with only Debayer GPU selected.

But Red clips are offline if I select None for the Red GPU mode. We'll look into that. But you really never want to use that mode. It's just a last chance failsafe if the GPU can't handle the debayer function. Any CUDA 11 GPU with 4GB or more of VRAM should work for debayer. A 2GB VRAM GPU won't work and will fall back to software decoding, which is the same as selecting None for Red GPU.

So use the Red GPU debayer mode. It does not put that much load on the GPU.

@Dwaine: I've uninstalled the previous nVidia drivers, installed the latest one, done all latest updates. And I finally get the same results as yours. MP4 encoding is working back. Same for R3D debayer mode only. But, yes, files are seen as offline if I select "none". My goal is to send the maximum of the workload to the CPU 64 cores.

We graded a project today. Losing the cursor moves as I described is a real pain. I'm not the only one with this bug. We had to enable / disable dual screen to get it back.

By the way, you may check here another victim of the unsolved terrible corruption bug here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=108144#p760082

No fix since 2017! I'd like to use my non-US keyboard.

I have installed Resolve 17.2.1 in Fedora 34, everything works fine except that I cannot hear any audio during playback. I downloaded the Fairlight Linux audio library, all the sounds show up in the sounds library in resolve but whenever I add them to the project and try to play them, they play without audio. I have tried converting the audio into other Linux-supported formats from the documentation but the result is the same. I thought it was because Fedora changed from pulseaudio to pipewire but I completely swapped them and still, it doesn't work.

Is there anyone who uses Fedora 34 and audio works? Would you mind sharing what you did?

System: Lenovo Legion 5, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, Nvidia GTX 1660 TI, 16 GB Ram

EDIT: It is indeed Fedora's switch to pipewire that's causing all the issues. I installed alsa-plugins-pulseaudio then I edited the asound.conf file as explained in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/DaVinc ... eo_preview and the audio started working again.

This script can be useful to convert all files regardless of their codec to be compatible with Resolve on Linux.

EDIT: Solved by downgrading the opencl-amd package to 20.40. Running 20.45 and above results in a segfault in any opencl application.

Although unsupported, I'm running Manjaro and using the the amdgpu-pro-libgl and opencl-amd packages to enable compatibility with resolve while using mesa with my Ryzen 4700u laptop. Resolve starts, but anything involving media playback or creating thumbnails does not seem to work and freezes my Wayland gnome session.

This log is me launching the program with progl /opt/resolve/bin/resolve, creating a new project, importing a clip with the DNxHR codec, and then quitting the program after it freezes (luckily it did not freeze the Wayland session).

Recently I installed Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS and DaVinci Resolve 17 But Getting Black Playback Screen Problem.
I had already configured OpenCL using rocM and successfully get my GPU listed in resolve 17 preference memory gpu section but not getting the playback screen. It still black. Any hep? Sorry for my bad English.

MY PC CONFIG :

Can you try this. Install darktable it's just one package. Then from the command line run

darktable -d opencl

That should tell you if image support is working with openCL. That seems to be the sticky pont with AMDs openCL solutions. If it just launches with out any warnings about disabling openCL then you can just uninstall darktable again.

You will also want to look through your resolve rolling log located at /opt/resolve/logs/ if I remember right. You might want to close resolve go in there and delete or move the logs and then fire up resolve in order to reduce the amount of noise.

Any one know if any one has gotten a 6000 series card working? Now that they are actually available I am considering one.

Thanks for the reply. As you said i install darktable and open it using the command you provide and darktable works fine without any errors.

mehedishakeel wrote:Thanks for the reply. As you said i install darktable and open it using the command you provide and darktable works fine without any errors.

Here is the log from /opt/resolve/logs/

It looks lkie every thing works except for your viewers. Your able to open projects, save them etc. Just the viewers being blank is an issue. Have you tried dragging different types of media in to see if all of them are an issue or just some? I would drag in a BRAW clip, a jpeg and maybe a couple of other video formats. If you aren't shooting BRAW my understanding is there are sample clips available on the BMD site. If you can't find any thing let me know and I will throw some thing up. If you have a BRAW file try testing the BRAW player and see if it displays correctly. The BRAW player gets installed with resolve.

I see that you are running a NAVI 10 5000 series board. I thought you wer running a 6000 series board. In that case my sest adice is to switch to the AMDGPU drivers or downgrade your ROCM <12.1. Some thing broke between ROCM and resolve after that and I don't know if it ever got fixed. I know AMD software has been mostly focused on the great cash register in the data center over the last year or two.

For my part my daily driver is Fedora but I duel boot to Centos just to run the AMDGPU drivers. Yup it sucks. But if you want to run resolve you do what you have to do.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostWed Jul 28, 2021 5:58 pm

I recently finished an install of the CentOS 7.3 ISO, as provided by BMD. This was on a dual boot system, with Resolve on one boot drive, and auxiliary software on another boot drive. Everything seems to be working very well now. One question on my mind; Is it safe to update Resolve on this current system? Or would it need to be a clean install of the ISO, then update Resolve?

My guess is not – but, knowing that previous updates have thrown my (non approved ISO) system out-of-whack, I'd hate to upset the delicate balance of something that is working just fine. I'd also hate to miss out on any big updates, either.

Any advice?
Thanks!

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostWed Jul 28, 2021 6:14 pm

Hi,

My computer freezes randomly when I grade a new project in HDR (Dolby Vision CMU 4.0 - ST 2084 - 1000 nits). It occurs when making different kind of action in the Color tab and then playing the video. It may works fine during 5, 10 or 15 minutes until it crashes. I can only turn off physically the PC.

Strange thing: The exact same project with the exact same medias runs perfectly in SDR

My hardware config:
AMD Ryzen 3990X
nVidia RTX 3090
Decklink 4K Extreme 12G
Mini Panel

My software config:
Centos 8.3
Davinci 17.2.2
Latest drivers

I thought it could be a hardware fault by the graphics card so I run different stress tests during a full hour for each one. No error at all. GPU temperature is fine too (crash at around 51°C). CPU is fine too.

Dwaine or anyone from BM, would you please import this project and check it on your side?

Please remember it freezes randomly after several minutes.

Thank you.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

finlandfinish wrote:I recently finished an install of the CentOS 7.3 ISO, as provided by BMD.

Any advice?
Thanks!

Updating to a new version by using the Resolve Studio installer should work fine on CentOS 7.3. Even updates from one major release to another have worked without issues. No need to make a clean install.

@Lucius: Testing your project on an HP z420 with CentOS 8.3 and 17.2.2 and an RTX6000 GPU (closest thing I have to your RTX3090) I'm not seeing any issues. I played with it randomly yesterday over the day, and let it play overnight. That was with no local media. Today, I've added an 8K Weapon clip and applied your clip 2 grades to it. And no issues.

Maybe it's related to your Komodo footage. I don't have any of that to test with.

If you have Red GPU Decompress and Debayer selected, try just selecting Debayer, and see if that has any effect.
