Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostThu May 28, 2020 1:00 pm

Hi there

I don't know if anyone can assist. I'm trying to get Davinci 16.2.2 to run on Linux. I have tried both Acrolinux (Arch based) and Neon (18.04 based). On Neon I get 1 green stick 1 yellow for GPU but it opens etc no problem. Just obviously GPU errors when trying to play videos. On Arco it was easy and I get 2 green ticks. But app hangs on "Looking for control surface"

Please Blackmagic, just give us AAC- and MP3 decoding.
I really want to use my Linux partition (Manjaro Gnome) more since Resolve Studio runs much faster on it. The difference in speed especially with 6K H265 10 bit footage is quite 'exaggerated'.

I have exactly the same problem on Arch Linux with AMD card. I have Rocm 3.3.0 installed, which should be supported but it get stuck on Looking for control service.
Same setup on CentOS 7.8 with Rocm 3.3.0 works perfectly Also it is not a kernel issue. I have updated CentOS to kernel from 3.1.0 to 5.6.15 and Davinci Resolve studio still works great. So I think it is most likely some library issue there

Try updating the driver. The 340x series is deprecated on most platforms.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have a similar setup (Ubuntu, RocM, AMD GPU) and get the same consistent crash in the Color Workspace when using the mouse to adjustment shapes in the 'Power Window' as well has middle mouse click-and-drag to adjust the view when zoomed in.

I'm new to OpenCL. Anyone know a Linux utility like `glxgears` I can use to sanity check my setup please?

Here is the coredump info https://s.natalian.org/2020-06-07/cored ... output.txt

The ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/logs/ says: OpenCL error -1001: 'Unspecified Error', GPUPropertiesUtilUnix.cpp:338

I'm new to OpenCL. Anyone know a Linux utility like `glxgears` I can use to sanity check my setup please?

You'll need either NVIDIA or AMD graphics.

Bit disappointing Intel isn't good enough?

I refuse to buy Nvidia again since it conflicts with my OSS principles, so I hope the new Ryzen 4000 equipped laptops will have a compatible solution?

Your OSS principles will have to take a back seat. There is one component of AMDs compute stack that they haven't open sourced and it looks like they never will. Your going to be running a blob with all it's issues no matter how you slice it.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

Please allow me to reiterate these three points once more:

Hardware compatibility: please refer to a. the configuration guide - which provides both the thought process behind getting your hardware as well as examples, and b. the changelog for each installer (e.g. 16.2.2) - for 16.2.2, this shows a discrete Nvidia or AMD graphics with 2 GB VRAM as a minimum requirement for Linux.
• Always clean install manufacturer drivers - i.e. downloaded from the manufacturer's website - a creative/studio applicable version fi there is a choice. Please remove open source or operating system defaults drivers before doing so. If you're changing graphics cards, it is good practice to do this step over to avoid remnant libraries from the previous driver.
• If you're using a discrete graphics card, please make sure to connnect all your displays to the graphics card. If there are multiple cards, choose a display card, connect all displays to that.

Please note that they apply to both Windows and Linux systems.

Install is most likely OK but there is probably a driver related issue. The console messages from Resolve does not give any useful information unfortunately. Please have a look at your Resolve debug logs at ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/logs/ResolveDebug.txt.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostWed Jun 10, 2020 1:05 pm

Hi
So, since my last post, i've order a sapphire rx 580 4Go, and i'm trying to install Resolve on Fedora 32 / Ryzen 3700x + AMD RX 580.

I've uninstalled Resolve, remove all /opt and /home/user/.local/share Resolve folders.

I've reinstall amdgpu xorg driver

Code: Select all
$ lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'
0b:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590] (rev e7)
Subsystem: Sapphire Technology Limited Nitro+ Radeon RX 570/580/590
   Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
   Kernel modules: amdgpu

i've reinstalled amdgpu xorg drv, tried Rocm 3.5 (last version), but unable to run Resolve...

Code: Select all
$ cat /etc/yum.repos.d/rocm.repo
[ROCm]
name=ROCm
baseurl=http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/yum/rpm
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0

Isn't openCL 1.2 the requirement?

I'd try the amdgpu-pro driver. But I think you'd need to be on a supported distro or funny thing can happen (not ha ha funny).
Last time I tried on my spare machine with vega56 I was on ubuntu 18.04 and everything seem to work, except error drawing the fairlight track canvas.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostFri Jun 19, 2020 1:21 pm

AMD released official amdgpu-pro 20.20 last week with Ubuntu 20.04 support and now Davinci Resolve 16.2.2 is running on r9-390x.

https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/linux/a ... .04.tar.xz

The system is started with kernel arguments "radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.dpm=1 amdgpu.dc=1" and the packet manager has i386 repo's added "sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386" than the driver can/must be installed with "./amdgpu-install --pro --opencl=legacy".

The "--pro" flag is necessary to install proprietary OpenGL support with Compatibility profiles, since AMDGPU opensource mesa/opengl core support isn't working anymore since Davinci Resolve 16.1, the older 16.00 release did work with opensource AMDGPU mesa driver with only proprietary opencl=legacy modules.

Question to AMD users:
Can someone on AMDGPU with newer hardware rx480/rx580/higher confirm that Davinci Resolve 16.2.2 / 16.2.3 is working for them with opensource mesa/opengl drivers but only with proprietary opencl(legacy/pal) or maybe even rocm?

If won't work with opensource MESA/opengl than this might be a Davinici Resolve regression since using deprecated OpenGL compatibility profile(s) in newer software is not a longterm solution and AMD even suggest using the mesa version for better opengl performance but only prorietary opengl for dated apps.

Not exactly what Walter asked for, but I'm also looking for help. I use Manjaro, the driver mentioned by Walter is provided via the AUR and I just installed it. (Source: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opencl-amd/ )

Unfortunately, Resolve still does not start.

I used the kernel arguments mentioned by Walter. What I could not do is running the amdgpu installer, because that's not how the package is installed on Arch-based systems, which Manjaro is. I looked at the install script but it basically collects Ubuntu packages which I do not know the Arch equivalents of. So propably some of these legacy / compatibility stuff is missing on my system but I can't figure out what it is / where to get it / how to check if that is the problem.

My card is a Radeon RX 570.

Also maybe worth noting, further up in the log I also get a notice that libDeckLinkAPI.so cannot be found. As the start continues, I suspected that that is not relevant to me.

Hi Andreas56,
Did you check if "amdgpu" is used as kernel module with "lsmod" and if "amdgpu pro" opencl is installed/working for you in other apps? See "illwieckz" github post and try "clinfo / darktable" test to confirm that opencl is installed:
https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/RO ... -554738964

I still guess you may need "proprietary opengl" if you use Davinic Resolve higher than version 16.00 so did you check the "amdgpu pro" section of the archwiki?

So I have a 5700XT and RX480 on my wife's pc. I have done some tests and shortlisted the faults

On ANY Ubuntu based distro I can get Davinci working fine - bit slow on KDE Neon though. I couldn't come right on CentOS 8.

I tested this on Ubuntu, KDE Neon and PopOS (PopOS doesn't support the install of AMDGPU-PRO so I currently have build errors everytime and update runs - it can't install the DKMS) but otherwise DR etc all work when you do the below.

If you don't do the below it will get stuck on "Looking for control surface" like Arch / Manjaro and Arco do.

amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=pal,legacy (works)
amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=pal,legacy --headless --no-dkms(doesn't work, --no-dkms is no longer supported on AMDGPU-PRO 20.20 - it worked on 19...)
amdgpu-install (doesn't work)
amdgpu-pro-install (doesn't work)

On ARCH based
1. You must remove the MESA-OPENCL which the AUR installs.
2. Install "opencl-amd" - 20.20

Then you will get two green ticks. BUT it gets stuck on "Looking for control surface"

So maybe someone with more known can investigate what "amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=pal,legacy" does in addition to just installing OpenCL as the AUR for "opencl-amd" says "OpenCL userspace driver as provided in the amdgpu-pro driver stack". So it's from the PRO which should work but doesn't. '

I suspect something small is missing to get it working on Arch based - which I use as my daily driver.

If in archlinux you are removing "mesa-opencl" and installling "amdgpu pro opencl", you are still missing amdgpu-pro opengl.

The difference between "amdgpu-install" and "amdgpu-pro-install" is that the second installs the proprietary opengl by default and is the same as "amdgpu-install --pro --opencl=pal,legacy".

bmmatbon If you can try a older Davinci Resolve 16.00 with just "amdgpu opencl" (not opengl) you can probably get beyond the "Looking for control surface" screen.

Can't I just install the amdgpu-pro opengl part then? Not sure what the package name etc would be as all I can find in the AUR is for 19.3 nothing for 20.20.

I'll try this on Ubuntu shortly. (I have like 6 OS's on my drive ;).

I don't have a very old version archived. The oldest I have is 16.2.1. Currently installed 16.2.3. Surely though if I can get 16.2.3 running on all the Buntu's I can find what Arch is missing so can just use the latest there?

me too me too!

Ubuntu 20.04 with an RX570 (egup!)

aAll my monitors run fine with amdgpu-install but not with amdgpu-pro-install, but Resolve stops at the 'looking for control surface' screen :/

on the pro drivers, even without the egpu attached, KDE spits crashes, and when I plug in the egpu it doesn't get to boot...

Apparently this --no-dkms used to work, but not on the latest version... (can't post url)

There's some attempts to get pro working other than that as well (can't post url)

Wonder if this work around might do the trick for just resolve: search for Gentoo wikk AMDGPU-PRO "Use AMDGPU-PRO Vulkan drivers for specific games" - dunno but might be worth a try. I'll give it one if I have time.

Curious if anyone else has success with 20.04 and cards like the rx570

I can’t run DaVinci Resolve on my laptop. I tried to start using the Nvidia 1050 Mobile video card through the terminal. Run on manjaro Linux. The start window is displayed, then disappears. In the terminal, it produces the following error:

I can't get Da Vinci to run due to problems with the GPU, as reported various times in this threat. I wonder if it's a hardware or driver problem. Due to the setup configuration guide found in this threat (https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... _Guide.pdf) some Intel cards are supported. If someone has indications how to find out which Intel cards are supported and/or how to find out and set them up, highly appreciated!

The setup is as follows:
Code: Select all
 lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (Whiskey Lake) (rev 02)
Subsystem: Lenovo UHD Graphics 620 (Whiskey Lake)
   Kernel driver in use: i915
   Kernel modules: i915

The logs report no GPU drivers installed:
Code: Select all
...

However, later in the logs there's some indication that something got detected:

I don't know if this will be of value to any one but I am adding it as a data point. I just did a sucsessful new install of Centos 8.2, KDE, amdgpu-pro-20.20-1089974-rhel-8.2 & Davinci 16.2.3. This is with an RX580.

A headless install amdpgu-pro installs fine load opencl etc but resolve will not start. The only combination that does work is
./amdgpu-pro-install -y --opencl=pal,legacy

When installing it game me the "WARNING: amdgpu dkms failed for running kernel" message which I assume means I will never be able to patch like on my last install with the cruddy proprietary drivers.

I wish the headless option worked with resolve on Centos but it never has for me.

DaVinci Resolve does not run on any Intel integrated processors on Linux.
The FAQs, readmes for each verson (e.g. 16.2.3) and support all specify an nvidia or AMD discrete card with at least 2 GB VRAM and cleanly installed manufacturer drivers.

IIRC, there is a --no-dkms switch that can be invoked when the dkms error presents, usually on newer kernels.
Sorry, cannot test it, but I think worth a try

And that is a shame. It would be great if I could do the heavy lifting on the desktop then export the project then import it on the laptop go to a client meeting and be able to add notes during the meeting rather than having to enter them into a text doc and then have to go back to the office open DR and search for the time points and re-enter the changes the customer requested. Having to buy a $5000 laptop just to enter notes on a time line is kind of crazy.

You can get a laptop with a NVIDIA RTX2060 6GB for around 900 Dollar.
Install PopOS or Manjaro and Davinci Resolve Studio will run fine and even editing and grading in a 4K timeline won't be any problem.

Question to CentOS users:

Can you have your decklink device detected as an audio device by the O.S. *outside* DaVinci? Not here...

Thanks.

Exposing Desktop Video Card As an Alsa Audio Device in CentOS 7.3

To allow the Decklink card to be used for system audio stuff, like audio from a web browser, you need to load the snd_blackmagic-io.ko driver.

This driver is generated as part of the normal Desktop Video install, but it's not loaded.

You can manually load it (as root user) by typing:

modprobe snd_blackmagic-io<ENTER>

This allows the DeckLink card to be seen as an ALSA audio device.

Now you should hear system audio from the DeckLink card.

To have the driver loaded automatically at boot time, do the following::

In a shell, as the root user (i.e. su <enter> and enter the root password):

cd /etc/modules-load.d<ENTER>

vi snd_blackmagic-io.conf<ENTER>

In the file, put the following line:

snd_blackmagic-io

Save the file.

(You don't have to use vi, you can also use nano)

With this file created, snd_blackmagic-io will be loaded at boot time.

To see if it's loaded:

lsmod |grep blackmagic<ENTER>

Should see something like:

[resolve@localhost modules-load.d]$ lsmod |grep blackmagic
snd_blackmagic_io 13540 3
blackmagic_io 1912167 2 snd_blackmagic_io
snd_pcm 106416 5 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_blackmagic_io,snd_hda_core
snd 83432 21 snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_device,snd_blackmagic_io
[resolve@localhost modules-load.d]$

Note that the kernel drivers are in /lib/modules/(name -r)/extra

Should have:
blackmagic_io.ko
blackmagic.ko
snd_blackmagic-io.ko

Once you have the snd driver installed, you need to go into CentOS Applications - Settings - Sound, and select the BMD audio device as the Output device. Then system sounds, like from the Firefox browser, should come out of the DeckLink card. I've tested SDI out and that works. The SDI frame rate and resolution will be whatever was last selected on Resolve, or if not that, whatever is selected in Desktop Video - Video Output - Default Video Standard.

Unlike Resolve, a .deb install is supplied for Desktop Video. Is this procedure applicable to non Centos Linux systems?

That would be great!

So I have been using the free version of Resolve ( not intensively ) on Leap for a while(since resolve 12.5)
I haven't had any issues with running Resolve. But once I got an activation key it screws up a lot(just wrt to activation).

When I got the key it worked. But when I close it and reopen it , it'll prompt for the key again and fail to work. I had to call tech support for them to clear my license. They obviously wont support leap but they'll keep resetting my key.

So, the install instructions say to not install as root, but when I try this as a regular use, giving the root pw gives this error:

polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie Error executing command as another user: Not authorized This incident has been reported.

But I didn't have issues installing with sudo and running as a regular user, but maybe this has something to do with the permissions now? But it's kind of weird that this issue pops up.

Is anybody else running the studio version on non-supported and not having these issues? Maybe I can fix a permissions error? Or maybe i'm missing a pacakge...

I found i'm missing fakeroot from some ubuntu deb instructions thing but that didn't help...

No. I just bought a Lenovo Legion with a GTX1650 - for less than 900 Euros. Running Linux Mint 20 with 16GB RAM Resolve works just fine. Only change I did was to replace the 1TB mechanical drive with a 1TB SSD. System is on the built-in m.2 NVME SSD.

My rule of thumb for bying IT equipment is to stay away from AMD GPUs and use NVidia instead - it will save you a lot of headaches. You install the binary driver (proprietary) and thats it. Second rule is to forget about Intel GPUs as well - they are just not working well due to memory restrictions and bad performance.

That said - after installing Mint on the Legion I just installed Resolve Studio without any hassle. No further adjustments needed - it just worked out of the box.

have you tried running the installer as sudo?

Alternatively, have you tried running Resolve with sudo privileges?

polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie Error executing command as another user: Not authorized This incident has been reported.

I found i'm missing fakeroot from some ubuntu deb instructions thing but that didn't help...

have you tried running the installer as sudo?

Alternatively, have you tried running Resolve with sudo privileges?

I did run it as sudo of course. it ran and worked fine in the free version.

so i tried upgradeing to 2.3 and it crashed on start up. now after removing it and going back it still crashes on start up ha.

if you run in verbose mode via command, what are the messages showing?

Also, what are the Resolve logs showing?

There's always the nuclear option of completely removing /opt/resolve and starting again.

That's only half nuclear. For complete nuclear with Resolve 16, you also need to remove the user specific stuff in this path:

Hi, I'm using DaVinci Resolve 16.2.5 and everything works great except that I don't have any video playback or preview.

Audio is playing tho. And the everything seems to be rendering correctly when exporting.
If I interrupt the video playback by hovering and moving my cursor over the audio file in the media pool then the timeline video and audio playback stops but then one frame from the video timeline is shown. If I just stop the timeline playback then nothing is shown, only grey background.

Can somebody assist me with this issue?

Here is the video where I demonstrate the issue:

I've attached my log archive.

So, the persmissions during the install worked fine in kde vs i3 but still had issues with it crashing. I might try downgrading to 2.2 which was the last one that worked under leap

Hey Walter,

thanks for your reply.

I checked the use of the kernel module and it was loaded.
I did the Darktable test and OpenCL was okay.
Then I checked OpenGL based on the Arch wiki and it turned out I was using the opensource driver. I installed the proprietary driver and now the problem changed. Resolve apparently loads a little further, this time, I get the window that offers to send a crash report (whereas before, Resolve just quit).

In the console the last output lists all my audio interfaces.

In the crash archive the last entry is
Code: Select all
#TIME Sat Aug 22 01:40:48 2020 - Uptime 00:00:02 (hh:mm:ss)

/usr/lib/libpthread.so.0(+0x14960) [0x7f79f6383960]
Signal Number = 11

Any idea how to proceed from here?

I still guess you may need "proprietary opengl" if you use Davinic Resolve higher than version 16.00 so did you check the "amdgpu pro" section of the archwiki?

Hello everyone,

I have a little issue with Resolve 16.2.6 under Fedora 32.

When i launch Resolve in user mode, the configuration dialog windows crash when i choose a working hard drive.

No problem when i launch Resolve in root mode but I want to work clean with my user session.

I figue that it's a permission issue but I don't know what to do to fix this ?

Thank's

Unfortunately, Resolve still does not start.

...

I used the kernel arguments mentioned by Walter.
My card is a Radeon RX 570.

OpenCL != OpenGL

Besides the right driver requirements "Radeon vs AMDGPU (both opensource)" I mentioned the closed source other TWO components: OpenGL and OpenCL. The first, OpenGL can be taken care off by "Mesa" which is the default for most linux distributions and did work until Davinci Resolve 16.0 but it must be replaced with closed source proprietary OpenGL (if you use the amdgpu pro driver) which is a requirment for Davince Resolve 16.1 and higher.

The kernel arguments I gave are for early GCN AMDGPU's lower than Rx4xx series like R9-290x or R9-390x (which uses by default RADEON driver) and you have RX570 (default AMDGPU driver). The later AMDGPU driver can be assisted with closed source OpenCL modules or replaced OpenGL modules(only one OpenGL system can be installed). For Vulkan and OpenCL multiple backends can be installed and used with AMDGPU on the same system.

You already answered one of my question, that is you are running with a RX5xx card with only OpenCL provided by AMDGPU pro driver (pal/orca/legacy) and still cannot run current Resolve 16.xx because you probably miss the AMDGPU pro OpenGL driver... so for confirmation?

@Andreas56
Please try the older first 16.00 release of Davinci resolve and see if that works with only having OpenCL installed, or install the proprietary closed AMDGPU pro OpenGL component which (removes Mesa OpenGL) but you have to find the archlinux/manjora equivalent package:https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/amdgpu-pro-libgl/
