Unfortunately BMD don't officially care about Linux bug reports unless there from their approved version of Centos 7.3.

Unfortunately the proposed solution on that thread didn't help me, the problem is still the same.
I did this as suggested in that thread:
Code: Select all
# Tested with Debian Buster
# First make sure that you don't have a /usr/lib64 on your system.
# In my case, I had some files in /usr/lib64 that belonged to DaVinci Resolve
# that I simply removed (because it was pretty obvious that the file didn't matter).
# Not sure if it was from an older installation, or simply the current installer
# adding files here.
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib64
OS: Ubuntu 20.04
Kernel: 5.4.0-54-generic
CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1900X 8- (16) @ 3.800GHz

I have a Linux Mint 19.1 installation with an ATi FirePro W2100 2 GB card. I also have an nVidia GT 1030 2 GB around (384 cuda cores). Which one of the two cards is more likely to work with DaVinci Resolve on Linux?

It depends. What kind of videos are you planing to edit?

Resolve needs as much video memory as possible because it is using the GPU for most of the workload. 2GB of video memory is not enough for serious editing. I recommend 4-6 GB as an absolute minimum if you edit and compose Full-HD video. For heavy compositing in Fusion, Noise reduction and stabilization I would recommend at least 8 GB of video memory.

But, again, it depends what you want to do with Resolve.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

I've been using the 2 GB ATI card with no problems on my Windows machine in both HD and 4k videos, for plain editing and color grading (no extra effects or denoising). I got a cheap, refurbished machine to run Linux (16 GB RAM, core i5 3.10 Ghz), so I thought I'd upgrade my Windows machine with a 4 GB nVidia card, and use the ATi card on Linux. I don't like the tricks it requires to install that kernel driver though on Mint Linux, so I decided to buy the cheapest nvidia card I could find (I needed it to be low profile, display port too to support 4k/60hz and have at least 2 GB). So the GT 1030 (1st gen, that has the faster gddr5 vram) came about, and I bought it. So now it's between these two cards to run Resolve on Linux. I'm leaning towards nvidia. If Windows' Resolve was able to run with my 2 GB ATI as well as it did, why shouldn't on Linux, and with nVidia no doubt?

Sorry if this has already been answered. But i was wondering if Resolve on Linux is still crippled unless i have the studio version and some other BM hardware. would really like to get off of Windows and as soon as my budget allows i will be buying resolve studio. But not so keen on the idea of having to buy other hardware. Last i checked Resolve on Linux (UBuntu is the plan) was incredibly crippled.

I see no problem at all and yes, I'd also choose Nvidia. Maybe you could add a PPA for your graphics driver:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

This will take care of the latest drivers and automagically updating everything. Have fun.

Having trouble launching on Manjaro with RX480 GPU

I'd upgraded to the latest davinci-resolve 15.2.3-1, after having not used the program for a while. The last time I was using it I had an Nvidia GTX750ti which worked, but now I've changed to RX580 AMD. I thought it might be because I had all the cuda and nvidia packages still installed for the old GPU, so I just uninstalled them all, but still get the below error.

Which driver did you install for the AMD card? I am not sure about AMD (I'd never use AMD for Resolve) but you may need the proprietary driver - instead of CUDA you only have OpenCL with AMD hardware, maybe this is missing.

Maybe a good idea would be to cleanly re-install Resolve after you solved the GPU driver issues. Any other software which gives error messages?

Hello,

I've installed version 15.2.3-1 on deepin 15.9 distro, all according to the instructions.

Now DaVinci Resolve does not start.

Here is the output for ResolveDebug.txt:

So, after installing the new nvidia card and proprietary drivers, the latest Resolve works on my Mint Linux 19.1. One problem though: there is no window manager for the main window. So I can't grab that window around. Modal windows generated by resolve (e.g. the project properties window), do have a window manager. It's only the main window that doesn't. Any ideas?

Congrats ;) Did you use the PPA I mentioned?

One problem though: there is no window manager for the main window.

It is the same here. You may press ALT + mouse left button to move the main UI arround. I'm not fond of any unneccessary window decoration, so I don't mind much about the missing window functionality. I need as much space as possible for Resolve anyway.

Have fun,
Dieter

System Audio came around in v15. On Debian-based systems, makeresolvedeb is recommended for installation. Aside that, you need to install the dependencies manually (libssl, OpenCL, etc). BMD panels only function at the expense of multiarch outside CentOS.

Edit and Color tabs are good, Fusion is widely reported as crashy. But overall, the Linux port is a lot more usable now than it was a while ago

Technically it's not really a port - it's native. And performance has been fantastic so far - I can finally even use noise reduction (neat video ofx) in 4K without Resolve complaining about low GPU memory, shutting of GPU acceleration entirely or even worse stop rendering/crashing. Btw. I'm using a NVIDIA 1080Ti and Manjaro Gnome (with performance patches).

I had the same issue until I restarted my system lol
Try starting resolve as root or sudo. Should work. After a reboot even as a normal user.

Let me know how it works. Want to build another Manjaro machine using one or two Radeon RX570 or RX580 cards.

Yes, I sometimes like to remind this to folks who are trying to get it running on other distros. It's native to CentOS. More specifically for 15, it's developed on the custom build of CentOS 7.3 from BMD that comes with the NVIDIA 390.42 driver pre-installed and with the nouveau driver disabled.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you need to use the system for Resolve, why wouldn't your first priority be stability? It's easiest by far just to use BMD's build of CentOS 7.3. Why go through the headache of trying to get it on other distros?

One word: Performance.
Cent OS is the slowest distribution out there, Ubuntu is slightly faster but Arch (or Manjaro) just flies.
And honestly I'm not dealing with any issues at all - it's running better than on my Windows 10 install, especially when Ram or Vram are getting low.

It would be nice though if BMD could offer direct support. Resolve is getting more and more popular in the linux community. Maybe by providing their own PPA for Ubuntu based distro as well as AUR for Arch based or even more. Linked libraries and dependencies don't seem to be a problem anymore.

Interesting. Now I’m interested! Have you tested the same hardware with different distros? What kinds of differences are we talking? Greater than 10% render speeds?

Don't won't you to force into using Arch or Manjaro Linux but rendering my first feature film shot on the GH5 10 bit and using lot's of neat video (the project is colorgraded, edited and has lots of Fusion compositions in 4K DCI) takes almost 17 hours on Linux vs over 20 hours on Windows (in case it even finishes without stopping rendering because GPU memory is full and it refuses to continue) with the same exact settings and effects applied rendering in 4K DCI 24p DNXHR 10 bit.

The render issue was actually the reason for me trying out Linux in the first place and I have to say I'm impressed. Cancelled my Adobe subscription entirely (switched to Resolve a while ago anyway), replaced Photoshop with Gimp (which runs fantastic in Manjaro as well) which even allows me to work in 32 bit ACES colorspace without any color shifts or clipping while Photoshop doesn't lol.

I wasn’t talking about Windows vs Linux—I meant CentOS vs other distros. You said the other distros have higher performance than CentOS.

Phoronix has many benchmarks which showcase how bad Cent OS is.
Don't want to try it honestly since it's outdated as well and might not even support all the hardware in my computer.

It seems counterintuitive not to benchmark against the exact platform on which the software was developed. Without evidence, why would I go through the pain of getting it all running on Arch or Manjaro?

I know there's a LiveCD? with Resolve already installed to try it on - wondering wether NVIDIA drivers are enabled by default or not. But since it's running flawlessly here I don't see any need. But basically every distro I've already tried on this machine (Ubuntu, Mint, Opensuse, Solus etc. ran slower in comparison). The only distributions faster than Arch are probably Clear Linux or Gentoo.

One big purpose for the BMD CentOS build is having the NVIDIA driver pre-installed, as well as everything else necessary: PostgreSQL, libGLU, etc. They include the DVD because there’s basically no other setup required outside of what they include in their documentation: no need to play with library locations, paths, etc., and of course, Fusion doesn’t crash.

Well, installed Resolve Studio through AUR which is pretty easy.
Drivers were installed as well and already automatically updated to latest version just released a few days ago. No Fusion crashes either yet.

Didn't try the CentOS version, may do in the future though when I have more time again. Right now I'm really satisfied with my Manjaro installation (Gnome + Mutter Pre 3.32 performance patches, doesn't even slow down while rendering).

Is there even any download link to try it out?

There’s a link to the ISO in the PDF included with the Linux download.

What's an AUR that you used to install through?

Well, why should I use CentOS? I'm using my PC for more than just Resolve like 3D Design, KiCad, Blender, Taxes, Office and yes, a few Steam Games as well. That's why I use a widely supported Distribution like LinuxMint (tried a lot of different distros before). Everything works out of the box, all my hardware is supported and running, I can use Wine 4 and play a round of GTA V or continue editing in Resolve. The latest Nvidia drivers are automatically installed and updated via a PPA.

Give me one reason to use CentOS instead.

And btw, there also seem to be problems running Fusion in CentOS - there are some threads and postings about it in this forum.

No, Resolve's stability will get better and better, so a forced Linux Distribution is not longer neccessary.I see no reason why BMD refuses to build it for Debian or other actively maintained mainstream distributions.

Exactly - no further explanation needed.
Would be nice if BMD could do their own PPA and AUR though.

If you run Manjaro installing Resolve is as easy as downloading the zip file from Blackmagic and type pamac build davinci-resolve (or davinci resolve-studio) and reboot after that.

Alright, give us the clinfo output and while you're at it, give us the neofetch output. You might need to install both of those programs first.

I suspect you don't have and OpenCL driver for RX580. I'd suggest installing ROCm, that's what I have and it works beautifully.

If you run Manjaro installing Resolve is as easy as downloading the zip file from Blackmagic and type pamac build davinci-resolve (or davinci resolve-studio) and reboot after that.
I have been reading that a lot of folks have issues with Resolve on Linux if they have an AMD ryzen processor. I have a ryzen 7 1700, do you suspect i will run into issues. I have a GTX1060 6gb GPU. 32gb ram some ssd's and some hdd's.

I have Threadripper and Vega 64. Everything works fine in Resolve Lite except Fusion and DNxHD/HR, H.264 import and DNxHD/HR export. But I understand that half of those problems are fixed by installing Studio version. The Fusion not working is a real issue tho.

I have none of these issues, but running Resolve Studio on an Intel 8700K, NVIDIA 1080 Ti on Manjaro Gnome.

I am going to give manjaro a try tomorrow and see how it runs Resolve. I always end up going back to windows, because of driver issues, or fiddlyness issues.

Your GPU should support OpenCL 1.2. Resolve 15 documentation says the minimum is OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 3.0.

Check that your graphics drivers are up to date.

Yes, I sometimes like to remind this to folks who are trying to get it running on other distros. It's native to CentOS.

RHEL, originally, but sure. The BMD-era SuperMicro builds have always ran CentOS, AFAIK.

You want to use it? Don't let me stop you.

Just saying, BMD is trying to have it both ways. Linux support, generally, covers the most common distros. If only BMD would consistently call it the CentOS Linux version. But they say it's Linux, which makes it look sharp in this day and age :P

The other side of the coin is that a great many Linux users are precious about their distros. They hack it because they can and integrate Resolve into their existing workspaces. And Debian/Arch support is not that much to ask from software of this caliber.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well, installed Resolve Studio through AUR which is pretty easy.
Drivers were installed as well and already automatically updated to latest version just released a few days ago. No Fusion crashes either yet.

Didn't try the CentOS version, may do in the future though when I have more time again. Right now I'm really satisfied with my Manjaro installation (Gnome + Mutter Pre 3.32 performance patches, doesn't even slow down while rendering).

Is there even any download link to try it out?
I installed resolve as suggested. It won't start. It shows on the top bar like it wants to start but does not. I am launching it from the app drawer using gnome desktop on the latest manjaro stable release. Not sure what I'm missing.

In Manjaro-Settings under Hardware Configuration select video-nvidia (which is latest 417 atm). Install and reboot

Weird, Resolve Studio or Resolve?

If you start via command line, what does it say?
/opt/resolve/bin/resolve
or
sudo /opt/resolve/bin/resolve

I have been reading that a lot of folks have issues with Resolve on Linux if they have an AMD ryzen processor. I have a ryzen 7 1700, do you suspect i will run into issues. I have a GTX1060 6gb GPU. 32gb ram some ssd's and some hdd's.

1.] I can confirm that DNxHD/HR import/export has been fixed and works perfectly in the Resolve 15.2.3 lite. - Resolve issue with Threadripper, fixed.

2.] H.264 import is a Resolve problem, I've been told that's not supported in Resolve Lite for Linux but that it works perfectly on the Studio version on Linux. - Resolve Lite limitation

3.] In the 15.2.3 Resolve doesn't crashes when rendering Fusion titles and effects ever but the preview rendering is painfully slow, like 10-20min per fusion title, some titles don't render at all, those that to have colour artefacts at the start of the title. Those same artefact show up in the rendered video. All in all, Fusion is still not usable for me on Linux but this is an amazing progress! - Resolve bug, since this got better since they fixed DNxHD for AMD Threadripper I assume this could also be a Resolve having issues with Threadripper but it's definitely a Resolve bug, imo drivers for it and Vega are almost perfect.

4.] mp3 files are still unsupported on Resolve Lite so converting in wav is needed. - Resolve Lite limitation

If only I knew if Fusion works in Studio version. I'd like to purchase BMPCC4K but I don't wanna invest if the Resolve is flawed on Linux. For now I'm still waiting for them to fix the Lite so I can be sure that It'll work on Studio and then I'm buying it.

opencl-nvidia did the trick.. Thank you so much for the help. Going to see if i can make manjaro work. Hoping that other apps dont fight me with install or it might be back to windows. This was not too bad to get going but it took longer than it should IMO.

Glad it did!

If you want to make everything way faster install this via pamac
pamac build mutter-781835-workaround
and reboot

It will update the window manager.
Davinci Resolve will be way smoother, the whole desktop actually.
