Reaper works just fine ;)

Yeah, thanks - so learning curve again. Is it steep for Reaper?

Pretty easy.
Cross plattform.
VST support on linux via Lin-VST
For free as well (unless you want to use it commercially) - fair use basically
AND FAST!

OK guys - so would somebody care to describe what happens if I boot my PC from the USB drive with CentOS 7 distribution on it? I did browse the documentation, and know the Anaconda should start up and make it possible to install CentOS on the hard drive (installing drivers for the hardware I have, if it has them) - but what happens to to contents of drives other than the system one? Is there no way to preserve these other drives' contents? And, why is it so difficult/impossible to create a dual-booting system?

Sorry for the naivety of my questions, but the only other solution for me it would be to actually start the installation procedure, and this might prove to be too destructive to my liking...

hi piotr!

perhaps you should try this installation scenarios within a save sandbox environment provided by virtual machines (virtualbox, qemu/kvm etc.). you can boot from your preferred boot images by this kind of emulation and evaluate how well it works resp. how much freedom you have to control and customize the actual installation process.

i'll never advice anyone to work with this horrible outdated, incomplete and inefficient installation media provided by blackmagic! a clean ubuntu/debian/mint installation is IMHO a much more promising user friendly and efficient base for serious migration to linux. intels clear linux is another interesting but still rather uncommon choice, if you want a super optimized distribution, which in most benchmarks will have a significant lead.

installing resolve on one of this more common and very well working/documented standard distributions, isn't always trivial and straight forward, but it's IMHO easier to workaround all of resolves installer glitches, than to be trapped and handicapped by the shortcomings of BMDs provided base system otherwise.

modern linux distributions on standard PC hardware and X86 based server boards nowadays usually utilize grub2 for dual boot configuration and similar tasks. it's a very powerful tool, but a little bit hard to master even for long term unix addicts.

Piotr,

My understanding is that if you partition the one disk and have both Windows and Linux on the same one, the init systems will interfere with one another. So Windows might disable grub or Linux might disable the equivalent Windows tools. It can become quite a headache.

I believe it’s best practice to physically remove all disks except for the one you want to install Linux on.

Then, once you put the Windows disk back in, use your BIOS or UEFI to select which disk to boot to. It’s cleaner and easier to just give each OS its own whole physical disk.

sure -- both bootup control mechnism can not coexist/work at the same time, but both are somehow able to boot the other operating system to some degree...

but if you for example install debian on a free partition or disk on your machine and an already existing windows partition or boot loader is found by the installer, you will still get the advice to install (=overwrite it by) grub2, but it will be automatically configured providing a working boot menu entry for windows as well -- i.e. dual boot works out of the box!

the other way around it's not that easy. a new windows installation will always unsolicitedly wipe out the the linux boot mechanism, and you usually have to restore the dual boot capabilities manually by utilizing a rescue disks or sticks, etc.

Trying to run Resolve 16.0b2 on Linux Mint 19.1, it crashes after the splash screen and displays the "Resolve quit unexpectedly" window. Resolve 15 crashed the same way before. Note that it does run under Windows 10 on the same computer.

Apparently the line:
    "Let There Be CUDA Light, Done!!"
in the log file suggests that the GPU is correctly detected, in spite of these error messages:
    /opt/resolve/bin/libBlackmagicRawAPI.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    /opt/resolve/bin/BlackmagicRawAPI/libBlackmagicRawAPI.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Is VST finally working in Resolve 16b ?

Not working so far in 15.3.1 Linux.

Works quite well. What's not so easy is to dual-boot Linux and Mac.

What I did in order to dual boot several operating systems in my main work station is to mount my boot drive in an SSD tray. That way I can quickly swap out the system drive without worrying about any dual boot setup. It's also good for making backups. Before upgrades or major changes I can simply clone my system drive, do the upgrade and always have a way to go back in case of trouble.

All media on external 10Gbit NAS and scratch disks on (non-bootable) local SSD RAID.

I like the idea, Daniel.

Considering how totally green horn I am on all things Linux - please answer this question for me:

Considering that with your idea implemented I could just swap for the SSD disk with the system I want to use (and also containing the application installed on it - is that correct?) - how about my other drives in the PC, which ideally should be shared by all (2 in my case - Windows and Linux) operating system drives? As you can see in my signature below, I'm using:

- the (currently 4x) SATA hard drives RAID 0 with my data on it, which - at least with Resolve - can be the same source media files I use in my projects. and my project directories with CAD and some other format data for Moldflow (which should also be shareable by each OS); is that right?
- the 3x NVMe disks RAID 0, which I'm using for cached media - they should also be shareable as well?

Regards
Piotr

i don't think, this removable disk approach should be seen as an advisable solution for serious work!

it definitely prevents the installer from recognizing and correct configure the support for all available hardware.
it's very likely, that this kind of frequent changes resp. later inclusion cause much more headaches and practical issues. to the contrary i would strongly recommend to avoid unnecessary bios and hardware modifications as much as possible to gain system reliability.

sure -- i see the point, that newcomers have to learn to operate this new system, and it makes indeed a lot of sense to test drive an obscure installer first, before you apply its potential destructive power on real production setups, etc., but this kind of training and evaluation can be done in virtual machines or arbitrary other test hardware as well. it shouldn't be understood as an excuse to design your workstation from begin on in a rather questionable and botchy manner.

Hi guys, I'm no linux expert but I'd like to share what I've tried.

If you already have windows installed, it's a breeze.
You can install as many linux distro as you like and grub2 will ALWAYS setup windows in the boot menu along side the others, automatically.

I have 3 linux distros at the same time and windows remains accessibles as long as you don't mess up windows partitions. The only windows partition you can reduce (from within windows) is the OS one, usually C:\.
I share one big MEDIA partiton with all distros.
I create symlink in the home folder of every linux distro to the (Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos, etc..) folders in my MEDIA partition. It works great as long as I keep the same user name and password for all linux distros.
It's also a great way to test a different linux distro or to copy the same distro to another partition to test Resolve without messing up your working one.

I love the flexibility of linux.

I hope this can be helpful.

KristijanZic wrote:WORKAROUND

Alright gang, for all of you moving to Ubuntu 19.04 I'll cover the current workaround to get DaVinci Resolve 16 working on your fresh Ubuntu 19.04 installation using AMD ROCm driver on AMD hardware ofc. This should also work for any past distro down to Ubuntu 16.04.

We still don't know what the issue with Resolve or ROCm 2.3 is but as it turns out Resolve 16 seems to be working fine on Ubuntu 19.04 and ROCm 2.2 with Fusion FX effects and all. So our workaround is to install the previous version of ROCm driver, the 2.2.

For downgrading from 2.3 to 2.2 for those of you that already got the update on 16.04 up to 18.10 please refer to the GitHub issue https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm/issues/768
where beatboxa explains exactly how to do that. In case you are stuck pls post a reply on this forum thread and I'll do my best to explain it more.

THIS IS BY NO MEANS A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE BUT JUST A WORKAROUND UNTILL IT GETS FIXED
So BMD devs, I guess we still very much need you to help support your own software, the same issue is present on CentOS too. If you could just pinpoint the bug in ROCm if it's even a ROCm bug and report it, that would be great.
Again, the github issue: https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm/issues/768

With that said, follow these instructions:

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and run these commands (do not write the $ in the terminal, that just represents a terminal command):

First make sure your system is up to date:

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
$ sudo apt install libnuma-dev
$ sudo reboot

Now add the ROCm 2.2 apt repository
You won't be getting ROCm updates from this one and should be locked to ROCm 2.2

$ wget -qO - http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/debian/rocm.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
$ echo 'deb [arch=amd64] http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/2.2/ xenial main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rocm.list

NOTE: As good fella beatboxa from Github pointed out, note that it says "http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/2.2/ xenial main" as opposed to "http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/debian/ xenial main" that is on the official ROCm documentation*. That is because we want the 2.2 version which is, thank heavens, available from that same Radeon repo.

Add yourself to the video group:

$ sudo usermod -a -G video $LOGNAME

You may want to ensure that any future users you add to your system are put into the "video" group by default. To do that, you can run the following commands:

$ echo 'ADD_EXTRA_GROUPS=1' | sudo tee -a /etc/adduser.conf
$ echo 'EXTRA_GROUPS=video' | sudo tee -a /etc/adduser.conf

Now install the ROCm 2.2 by executing:

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install rocm-dev
$ echo 'SUBSYSTEM=="kfd", KERNEL=="kfd", TAG+="uaccess", GROUP="video"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/70-kfd.rules

WE'RE DONE! Install Davinci Resolve 16 with the .run** file and enjoy... for now.
It's still very much an open issue.

ROCm documentation: https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm
**No need to do it using makeresolvedeb, you can but you'll loose some tools like log archiver and DR panels app.

The problem is still present with the DaVinci Resolve 16 Beta 3

Can anyone confirm that the microphone issue in resolve for linux is still broke or fixed? Fully functional Software (studio or free) for linux doesn't seem to be priority for BMD.. I wonder why some devs cripple the linux version of their software. :?

Nope, even Lin-VST doesn't work, which works fine in programs like Reaper. Wonder why it's so hard to implement. But I honestly guess BMD isn't really interested in that nor fixing mic-input inside Resolve...

@Deezid:
Thanks for your feedback, so I can stop trying and write an issue to BMD support.

Response from the support:

"However, please be advised that support for third party VSTs and effects are provided by the third party.
As such, I would recommend contacting the vendor of your VST plugins to enquire with them as to which versions of Resolve these have been tested with and on which platforms. "

The answer reads a bit like a joke, I wrote them again....

Hi Everyone,

Resolve 15 used to work fine on my on Ubuntu 18.10 for me, but 16 is crashing just after the splashscreen on my new system (Ubuntu 19.04).
Here is the log. Anyone has a clue ? I reinstall the latest nvidia driver and Cuda.

Thanks a lot to all !
Cheers.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostWed May 29, 2019 11:06 am

Hey partypeople, i wanted to do another attempt of asking for help with Resolve on ArchLinux.
I am currently using amdgpu-opencl and after removing a conflicting package, i was back at the segfault right after "Let There Be OpenCL Light, Done!!" (there is nothing more to work with in the log as i see it).

I know not everyone here is a fan of Resolve on AMD but i had it working on Ubuntu the other day and i would like to have it on my main OS as well since Ubuntu and Windows, even with WSL hurt my workflow significantly. So here i have some advanced information to work with:

Strace -eopen:

Edit:
I tried to redo it enitirely with the latest copy of resolve studio and a patched aur pkgbuild (because it is out of date).
As root i am now stuck in the greeting screen (first run was root for activation as advised in the pkgbuild), and it goes no further than opencl light.
As user (already gave it full permission again) it is now pretty much an instant crash, as with gdb above:

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostThu May 30, 2019 5:30 pm

Hi. I've been trying to activate the serial version of Resolve on Arch linux unsuccessfully. I get "There was an error when attempting to perform the activation. Please contact Blackmagic Design support for assistance." I have done this and they suggested posting here. I have tried activating as root and as my regular user. I use the AUR package to install. I have internet access, I'm updated to current stable Arch linux and I'm not running a firewall. I'm currently trying to activate Resolve Studio 16, but I got the same result with 15.x. I had Resolve Studio 15 activated months ago, but have not been able to activate since re-installing the OS. I have activated with no problem on a separate computer running Win10. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

Uhm... so, I think I messed up big time. I upgraded from pop_os 18.10 to 19.04, and did a clean install while I was at it. I backed up the resolve database before the upgrade, or so I thought... it's nowhere to be found on my external drive!

Anyway, I have my home folder backed up, so my question is: Is the database stuff stored inside the home folder, or outside of it?

Lastly, how is the 16 beta working? Is it worth installing, or should I just continue to stick with 15 for now?

Alexandre Westphal wrote:Hi Everyone,

Resolve 15 used to work fine on my on Ubuntu 18.10 for me, but 16 is crashing just after the splashscreen on my new system (Ubuntu 19.04).
Here is the log. Anyone has a clue ? I reinstall the latest nvidia driver and Cuda.

Thanks a lot to all !
Cheers.

I'm having the same problem. I can run the Resolve 15 no problems but if I run any of the betas 1-3 it will crash on trying to open with the same error log. I can run the 15 installer and go back to 15 and everything works no problem. Does anyone know if there are different dependencies on Linux for 16 as opposed to 15? I'm running the latest Nvidia drivers. That's the only one I know of.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostFri Jun 07, 2019 6:33 pm

Hi,

I've just come across this thread randomly. A few weeks ago I switched from Mac to Linux Ubuntu 19.04. I went on and installed DaVinci Resolve 16 Beta Studio by simply unzipping and running the .run installer. The installation worked out of the box for me as far as I remember. What I remember for sure is that I didn't have to Google any issue or run any script.

When I installed, I didn't know yet about the CentOS requirement and so on. Now I am aware of it because I ran into issues with other VFX applications that had this same requirements and, contrarily to Resolve, didn't install out of the box.

To be honest, I haven't yet worked on any Resolve project after the transition. So I simply tested Resolve and it seemed to work fine (I imported some footage, did some edit, color grade, applied GPU effects, did simple stuff in the Fusion tab and exported a DPX sequence).

Now after reading of all all these issues that some people are having, I was wondering if there are specific tests I can perform to see if everything works correctly before jumping into a new production? In this way, if anything doesn't work as expected and I can do a fresh reinstall using the script to generate a .deb package instead.

Thank you

Seems much of that's history. I just installed on a fresh 19.04 without issue as well. Enjoy.

I'm pleased to report that the following configurations are working well for running Resolve Studio 15.3.1:
  • CentOS 7.6 with kernel 3.10.0-957.12.2.el7.x86_64
  • ELRepo's NVIDIA driver 430.14
  • Either 1x GTX 1080 Ti or 1x RTX 2080 Ti

Just make sure that when you install the ELRepo NVIDIA driver via $ sudo yum install kmod-nvidia that you have secure boot disabled.

Recently had a hiccough when configuring a system with two RTX 2080 Tis, but after installing 430.26 from ELRepo, with one little modification to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I now have a great, powerful, fast system. More info: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... om-elrepo/

Sad to report that Microphone input to Davinci Resolve 16b4 is still not working at all on Linux.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostSat Jun 29, 2019 5:08 pm

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with davinci resolve 15.3.1. I cannot get Davinci to run. It crashes after the initial setup. My system specs are
Core i7 860
P55 motherboard
8 GB RAM
ATI RX570 4GB
I did following steps:
1. Installed ubuntu
2. updated ubuntu
3. installed AMD drivers from their website
4. Installed Open CL
5. Installed Davinci using .run file

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Experiencing something weird. Running Ubuntu 18.04LTS with Resolve 16b4. Hardware is AMD Threadripper with VEGA FE, running the AMDGPU Pro and OpenCL drivers. Resolve recognizes the card and it all seems to work. EXCEPT: for Fusion, where the viewer box is black. With a node, you can select viewer 1 or viewer 2 but nothing is shown. With the rest of the tabs, Media, Edit, Color, etc, viewers work fine. And I can Deliver a render no problem. Using DNxHR files. All of that works.

Not sure if I've done something stupid like fatfingered a hotkey or if this is a bug.

EDIT: I just want to add. I'm using Daniel Tufvesson's makeresolvedeb script for the install. Also, I've tried installing b3 and b2, same problem. For obvious reasons, I'd rather not have to revert back to 15. If anyone wants a specific logfile posted, just ask. I'm going to re-install 16b4.

EDIT 2: Just installed AMDGPU Pro driver 19.20 (latest), had 19.10 installed previously. No difference.

It's been a while since I tried the Linux version. Is this just for USB microphones or all microphones?

I've not gotten it to work with any audio input, either onboard system audio or a USB audio interface (with XLR inputs).

It's easier to record with a secondary app, like Ardour or Reaper, and then import.

Thats really disappointing. I know on version 14 no audio worked at all in Linux and they solved that problem. So it can't see why this is so hard to solve the microphone audio issue. I really wanted to switch everything to Linux this year, but it's things like this that are stopping me.

Are there no hacks that work in Linux? Maybe some sort of emulator that would pass audio to resolve?

Hi James, I had the same exact problem when using the proprietary AMD driver stack. I tried on Ubuntu and CentOS, same behaviour.
Now I'm using the all open stack, Mesa + ROCm 2.5 and I've got everything working.
Performance are slightly affected tho, also Resolve cold start take a bit longer (from htop seems startup process is one thread bound?) especially loading the first project.

I tried also installing only the compute stack on top of Mesa from Amdgpu-Pro (--headless cmdline option) great performance, fusion working but sometimes some glitches.... And lose the ability to control GPU fan from radeon-profile, so reverted to ROCm

My specs: R7 1700, 32gb, Vega56, Ubuntu 18.04, kernel 4.18 (stock), Mesa stock, ROCm 2.5 installed as dkms package (not the method for upstream kernels), DR16b4

Detailed instructions to install ROCm are on the github page

Hey, that's incredibly helpful. I'll give it a try. Quick off-topic question: have you tried Blender 2.8 with ROCm and does it work for rendering?

You are welcome, please do keep in mind that I started on a clean install, since previously I had done a bit of testing to get 16b working, and installed and removed many packages. Probably unnecessary, but to reduce the signal to noise ratio.

Yes I tried blender 2.8, but at current state fails to build the render kernel or it builds but is very slow. On amdgpu-pro on the other hands works fine.
This maybe is a non issue, since Blender seems to scale pretty well with CPU core count.

That's a shame. I've got a weird setup with real time kernel support for jack audio. Looked over the ROCm github install instructions. I'll report back to the list after installing with results. Also found a video about using ROCm with Resolve, which might be of help to others.

I followed the same tutorial, rocm-dkms was reported to be broken.

Installing for upstream kernel was needed, and also Resolve 15 worked with 2.2 only. 16b4 had issues.

Then with 2.5 they seems to have fixed the dkms module, and is working on kernel 4.18.
IDK if realtime kernels can cause issues

Yes I tried blender 2.8, but at current state fails to build the render kernel or it builds but is very slow. On amdgpu-pro on the other hands works fine.
This maybe is a non issue, since Blender seems to scale pretty well with CPU core count.

That's a shame. I've got a weird setup with real time kernel support for jack audio. Looked over the ROCm github install instructions. I'll report back to the list after installing with results. Also found a video about using ROCm with Resolve, which might be of help to others.

hello, i followed this video to do that.
When i try excute sudo apt install rocm-dkms

with Ubuntu 19.04 probably you'll need to take the "upstream kernel" route, as documented on the github page of ROCm.

Currently the dkms module is validated only up to Kernel 4.18, so need to stick with Ubuntu 18.04

I have my NVME boot drive splitted in half with Ubuntu 19.04, with rocm 2.2 (upstream kernel method, you not install rocm-dkms) and Resolve 15 working
and the aforementioned clean 18.04 with 2.5 dkms Resolve 16b4 as my "production" (please bear in mind I'm an hobbyst) installation.

Hi everyone,

I have used DaVinci Resolve successfully with Debian Linux, no issues so far except some crashes especially in Fusion - but I guess that's "normal".

I've tried Resolve 16 beta 4 and 5 and I have two big issues:

1) It quits unexpectedly on the splash screen. However I can work around this by starting it with "strace -f ..." which slows the startup down to a crawl, but it actually works. So I guess it's some race condition at startup? Maybe some routine doesn't wait long enough for something else?

2) My graphics card doesn't show up anymore, Resolve complaints about no GFX card found and nothing shows up in CUDA / OpenCL list. The GFX card does show up in Resoive 15 though.

I have a "GeForce GT 650M" with 2G RAM.

Check here for some more details and screenshots:

Thanks.

Installing for upstream kernel was needed, and also Resolve 15 worked with 2.2 only. 16b4 had issues.

Then with 2.5 they seems to have fixed the dkms module, and is working on kernel 4.18.
IDK if realtime kernels can cause issues

hello , are u also using 19.04 ubuntu with AMD MESA GPU drive?

I will try to use R15 and give u feedback ASAP:)
Thanks again.

Well. I can report that uninstalling the AMDGPU-Pro 19.20 driver and installing standard AMDGPU, and then installing ROCm 2.5 per the standard instructions on their github page, DID IN FACT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH THE VIEWER IN FUSION.

This is a little strange, since it's been reported that ROCm versions post 2.2 didn't work with Davinci Resolve. And there was a hackity-hack solution going around to downgrade the OpenCL libs to 2.2. But I didn't have to do any of that. It just worked. With the caveat that it's a good deal slower.

THAT SAID: I haven't actually tested the system beyond just verifying that viewers run. So, next comment will be after I use the software for a bit to see if it breaks. Still... big improvement! (perhaps)

This is w/ Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS, kernel 4.18 with Low Latency extensions, on AMD 1950xTR with a VEGA FE card.

Oh, and the latest blender-2.8 Beta (from yesterday) claims it recognizes the card too. I'll try the classroom render and see what happens.

[EDIT]: For the stock classroom scene on the latest Blender 2.8Beta, compiling the rendering kernel took about 30ish seconds, then it proceeded to render on GPU in 06:50s. This is compared to 05:39s for CPU on the 1950x. OTOH: reports were that it could take hours to compile a rendering kernel before. So that looks like a pretty big improvement (functionality wise, at least)

I'm glad that you guys got Davinci working on Ubuntu with AMD cards.

Regarding Fusion page: has anyone noticed some slow render performance with relatively simple node trees, while keeping the setting "use gpu" (I'm away and can't remember the exact name) to auto, then seeing significant increase in performance turning it to off?

Seems that the global setting to tell Fusion to use only the CPU has been moved to a node by node option basis.
Asking especially to AMD graphics silicon users

Regarding performance loss: for me it is significantly slower from cold boot to load everything, but benchmarking with the standard candle seems about a 10% loss, with a gain in stability (maybe this is a feeling....)
