Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

I've installed Resolve on my Debian appliance. AMD Ryzen 1800 processor and Sapphire R9 290 video card. Install went swimmingly. Resolve launched into the setup screen and worked fine. However when launching past that, Resolve aborted with this response.

First glance seems to be GPU problem. Any ideas as to what I'm missing?

what version of the OpenCL stack have you installed?

I had originally thought that ROCM 2.6 was a winner when the viewers started working in fusion. But if I used any thing text based beyond Text+ it would crash. No titles would work. Down grading to ROCM 2.2 seems to be working well so far. Thanks to every one that suggested it.

My steps

Install Centos 7.
sudo yum install -y epel-release
sudo yum install -y dkms kernel-headers-`uname -r` kernel-devel-`uname -r`
nano -w /etc/yum.repos.d/rocm.repo

Past this in

[ROCm]
name=ROCm
baseurl=http://repo.radeon.com/rocm/yum/2.2/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0

Then CTRL+X to save
yum install rocm-dkms
reboot
Install DR.
Test
Collapse in relief that it fiiiiiinally works
Never, ever, ever patch.

Can confirm that rocm 2.6 causes issues in Fusion page, using anything 3D.
2D seems fine, but in my projects I switched all the settings to use GPU from auto to off.

Ubuntu 18.04.2, rolled back to rocm 2.5, Fusion seems fine now.

I admit that lately I tought to switch to Nvidia, but the binary blob driver for me is a major issue. Having a workstation run on an all open driver stack is a big plus.
Hoping things will get better and better with time.

With ROCM 2.6 I had the Fusion viewers working and I could do things like add a back ground and use the particle emitter.

Where I ran into problems is using any kind of Fusion + text effect. Text+ worked but any thing else would start eating resources and crash DR. If I moved to the edit page and dragged any fusion title effect to the time line every thing would suddenly get slow and down she would go.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

Hi, just got my new PC and DaVinci Resolve 15.3.1 works great, but 16.0b7 hangs or crashes at startup at "Looking for control surface".

I suspect it has something to do with Radeon and OpenCL, although I know for a fact that my setup is fine because other applications (e.g. DaVinci Resolve 15, Luxcore and Blender) use the card with OpenCL just fine.

Thanks for your help :)

Hi, I see you have rocm 2.1
Did you tried any other version?
I'm on Ubuntu 18.04.2 stock with rocm 2.5 installed with the dkms method and basically all is good

But with kernel newer than 4.18 I think it needs to be installed via the "upstream kernel method"

It took me a while to find a combo that fully work and is stable

I'm happy to report that I've done a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04.2 to give amdgpu-pro 19.30 driver a try and everything is working perfectly now. At full speed :)

For those that want to give a try, it can be downloaded from AMD, while you indicate your gpu as an RX5700, otherwise the webpage will give you 19.20 download link

I have a Vega56 and is working at full throttle now, had rocm 2.5 and while working fine was crippling card performance, somewhat limiting it (the card was running at lower temps)

from amdgpu-pro you only need the openCL compute bits, so install with the --headless flag, otherwise Fusion viewer will not work.

Standard candle:
66 blur 9fps
30 blur 21fps
18 blur 34fps
9 blur 59fps

6TNR 15fps
4TNR 20fps
2TNR 30fps
1TNR 47fps

noticed in some clip with time warp slowmo went from rendering at 1-1.5fps to 3-4.5fps
This while having a 165W powercap.
Is a standard MSI airboost vega56, no OC

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

Anybody able to help me on this one?

I have previously been able to install and run both 15 and 16 beta. However, because my GeForce GTX 570 didn't have the required grunt, neither version would really work properly.
So, I've just installed a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2 in a 23.5 GiB Intel® Core™ i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz × 8 running Ubuntu 19.04, GNOME 3.32.1, OS type 64-bit, 1.0 TB SSD.
I've also installed the Ubuntu Studio Controls, along with the low latency stuff that comes with that, for my audio applications.
I can, apparently successfully, install both 15 and 16b. Each go through every screen and stage of the install as normal. However, when I attempt to launch Resolve, its title shows up in the top menu bar (next to 'Activities'), and I get a turning wheel to indicate that something is happening, but then it just stops turning and nothing further happens. No splash screen, nothing.
I've tried both the 390 and 418.56 NVIDIA Drivers, to no avail.
Anyone out there who can suggest something?
Cheers,
Alan

Try launching resolve from the Terminal and look for clues. Should be in `/opt/resolve/bin`.

Thanks Seth, I'll try that. However, I've also realised that the minimum specs call for 32GB RAM, and I only have 24GB. I've ordered some more to meet the spec. Hopefully this will be the issue.

Okay, I've installed 32GB memory, and tried launching Resolve from Terminal as suggested by Seth. Now I get this error message in the terminal:
"/opt/resolve/bin/resolve: error while loading shared libraries: libOpenCL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
Any suggestions as to where I go from here?
Cheers for any advice,
Alan

most likely you have to install the nvidea opencl libraries and tools on your machine...
on debian the relevant packages would be: 'nvidia-opencl-common' and 'nvidia-opencl-icd'

Thanks Martin, I found another reference to this issue further back on this thread, and followed the advice give. It seems to wok okay now.

Here's a heads-up to folks on CentOS 7.6 right now who are dependent on ELRepo for the 430.40 NVIDIA driver.

I noticed a package update available for kmod-nvidia-430.40-2.el7_7.elrepo (64-bit). However, updating it on CentOS 7.6 right now throws the following dependency errors:
Code: Select all

That's because ELRepo is built for RHEL, which just released 7.7. There's a little bit of a lag between when RHEL 7.7 is released and when CentOS 7.7 will be ready. Historically, with minor releases like this, it's been maybe a week or so, according to this thread: https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic ... f819849dcc

If you notice a request from ELRepo to update from el7_6 to el7_7, you may want to hold off until you're actually running CentOS 7.7. I already grabbed 430.40 from el7_6, so I'm all set, but I presume the updates won't work until I get onto 7.7.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostFri Aug 09, 2019 4:03 pm

quickly tried both newly released versions
16 works fine
16.1b1 refuses to start with my config (Ubuntu 18.04, amdgpu-pro 19.30 opencl on top of mesa, r7 1700, 32gb, Vega56)

need to further investigate why but seems... guess it... gpu driver related :)

I noticed a package update available for kmod-nvidia-430.40-2.el7_7.elrepo (64-bit). However, updating it on CentOS 7.6 right now throws the following dependency errors:

I should add some helpful advice from the ELRepo developers. It's best practice to just install elrepo-release-7.0-4.el7.elrepo whenever yum prompts you to do so. It's not actually specific to any particular release of RHEL or CentOS.

However, if you go ahead and also install yum-plugin-elrepo.noarch, the yum plugin will automatically hide any packages requiring a newer kernel on systems where that newer kernel is not yet available. Then as
soon as that newer kernel becomes available, for example, when the system is updated to CentOS 7.7, yum will automatically find the kmod packages specific to the newer kernel in CentOS 7.7 that need updating. Nice, clean, and easy!

it looks like you do not have a more powerful nvida graphgic card in your computer -- isn't it?
unfortunately resolve for linux doesn't run on intel iGPUs without additional GPGPU acceleration. :(

Exactly that! I have an integrated Intel Sky lake.

Damn!!! The strange thing is that right after installation and first run, in quick setup informs that my video card is weak, but that for some HD videos would work. Tomorrow I can check the message right, but at first it seems to be compatible ?!

it's really a pity, that BMDs developer aren't able or willing to implement more useful error reports! :(

i really don't see, why users have to guess and ask on mailing list, if a simple popping up dialog box could explain the actual error resp. unfulfilled hardware requirement much more precise to any affected user.

btw.: the newer iGPUs and OpenCL 2.1 support provided by intels recent NEO libraries should be in fact sufficient for resolve from a technical point of view. perhaps it's not a optimal choice for efficient serious practical work, but it should be enough to run the application at least somehow. among others this would be very useful for automatic software tests resp. the reproduction of errors in CI pipelines, series of test runs which are usually executed in spartan containerized envrionments without additional acceleration support.

I totally agree! I practically lost all yesterday looking for some solution. Error reporting is inefficient for our own analysis. We practically have to "always" open a thread here in the forum to try to solve the problems.

Thanks for the answers Martin!!!

Just now I installed on the same computer with the same settings only on windows operating system and it worked properly.

What is the explanation? :o

unfortunately it's a limitation of the linux version -- and from a technical point of view it isn't necessary, because the intel OpenCL libraries on the linux side are just as powerful as their windows counterparts.

Can anyone here export AAC with newer Resolve versions on Linux?
For me it's gone since 15.3 :(

AFAIK AAC decode or encode hasn't been available on any Resolve build on Linux for years. See page 11 here: https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... c_List.pdf

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to install DaVinci Resolve for a few hours now and while I've had some succes it's just not quite there yet.

My system is a ThinkPad X1 6th gen, here is the hardware:

Regarding the distribution it's a fully up-to-date KDE Neon (aka based on Ubuntu Bionic):

Code: Select all
> lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: neon
Description:    KDE neon User Edition 5.16
Release:        18.04
Codename:       bionic

I installed DaVinci Resolve using the .deb converter.

A first attempt to start it failed because OpenCL was not working properly. Indeed, the NEO drivers were not installed. However, I have installed them and confirmed that they work properly using the LuxMark benchmark which completed successfully AND by the fact that the setup wizard deems my GPU worthy.

Now, instead of crashing right away, the software will display the loading screen and crash right after displaying "Looking for control surface" for a while.

Console output:

Now I'm not blind and I plainly see the "Skipping unqualified OpenCL platform: Intel(R) OpenCL HD Graphics". I guess it's the reason why it crashes. And it would be consistent with what other people say above.

But I still have some hope that I can run it on my computer, so if anybody can confirm the cause of failure it would be awesome. Thanks :)

Hi Daniel,

Success with MakeResolveDeb on Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.3 LTS. Thank you!

I am a licensed DR Studio user but this Ubuntu test was performed w/the free DR download as an experiment... seems to be functioning well so may try my licensed version w/Fusion over on Ubuntu to see how it goes.

Anyway, of course your script was very helpful...

Thanks again,
Ashley

I am having the following issue while starting the davinci resolve.
Using ubuntu 18.04.
Code: Select all
[0x7fa1588e1700] | SyManager            | ERROR | 2019-09-04 11:16:49,246 | Failed to connect to panel socket

Can anyone please help me, I am sitting with this installation for 2 days and still counting. Previously i used it on mac and worked perfectly without any issues.
Really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Did you install OpenCL properly? Not sure how you should do that with nvidia grpahics but I'd start there. To begin with, try "clinfo" in the terminal [and install it if missing] and see if it finds a device.

With Nvidia I'd stick with CUDA for compute tasks

Check your Nvidia driver installation, to be on the latest proprietary release and if you can get CUDA compute to work properly
Maybe you can test with Blender

Oh I'm not saying to use OpenCL but I've figured on my machine that it just won't start if OpenCL doesn't find anything.

Hi
I tried several Ubuntu version earlier, both before knowing about Resolve to activate brand new hw, and later to install Resolve on Ubuntu (not supported :)
I have worked with Redhat/Centos for many years, prefer to use Ubuntu!

Decided on Ubuntu Studio with it's low latency kernel which should be an advantage with sound/video work Your machine 'only' runs one front applikation (Resolve) so it gets priority attention (less latency)

Look at this link:
https:// forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewforum.php?f=21&start=125
Not quite sure how links on the forum works, so take away space after second / in the link

Read it and ask if something is unclear!
This setup is really fast and seems very stable for me
I don't mean you have to use Ubuntu Studio, but to me it works!
---
When you have messed up a OS install with failed installs etc it's safest to do a clean install (also a good confirmation after a successful install to run all your notes again as a clean install, maybe your notes are so and so... :)

It's been reported several times on the forum that installs on 'unsupported linux dists' fail at start due to missing lib libopencl, been very repeatable for me on several Ubuntu versions :)
Lot more 'issues' on earlier attempts

- Look at 'dmesg | less' and search for 'gpu' to see what boot thinks about you hw/gpu,
this helped me see missing things
- Try to start your installed resolve at command line with '/opt/resolve/bin/resolve', this will report among others if libopencl is the problem

If so install the missing component, lots of info on the forum how

Hi everyone
sorry my not perfect english
I downloaded Davinci Resolve 16 for Windows and Linux
I use an intel machine with integrated video gpu and it really amazed me a lot.

The program on Windows works, while on linux it crashes at startup because the video card has problems.
The integrated video card supports graphic libraries well both on windows and on Debian linux but for some strange reason on Linux the program does not work. I know that if I used an AMD or NVIDIA video card I would not have these problems, but I hope someone finds a solution to use the intel integrated video card for this program. I am sure that it is not a hardware or software problem libraries, but how the progrmma uses them. Has anyone managed to get Davinci Resolve to work with an integrated Intel video card? Thank you

Hi,
I think that OpenCl on Intel integrated on Linux is unsupported by Resolve

At least until we see a discrete Intel GPU in the future :)

yes -- that's what we have to assume, because nobody has a reported a success story, but from a technical point of view i don't see any reason, why it doesn't work better. in the meanwhile the intel OpenCL support on linux shouldn't be worse than on windows.

I agree Martin, technically it should be fine, since Intel iGPU drivers are mature AFAIK

What I see is probably a decision to not support it.
I stand corrected but Resolve per se isn't really optimized to run on weak hardware, and the Linux version "historically" is more targeted toward high end workstations.

Hopefully this is subject to change in the future, with Linux being more and more a desktop friendly OS.
But I digress, sorry

Have a cigar.

Yes, RHEL turnkey systems, which had "features" like Decklink as the sole audio output. Call it legacy or leftover, BMD bought the assets and ported the software to Mac and Win.

That's where the disparity between versions started - the Linux version is not really optimized for desktops. The Intel iGPU is something you'd hardly use with the big panel, so the lack of support wouldn't really be a problem... until BMD would release the Linux version as is.

It would be nice, but I wouldn't expect much. v14 on Linux had grave issues, which were fixed in 15b1. With Resolve now settling into a yearly release cycle, launching at NAB, available time to tinker with the Linux version decreases.

17b1 may bring new things, who knows.

Hi! I had Resolve working just fine on Fedora 29, till I had to reinstall system.

I've installed F30, Resolve 16/16.1 was not starting at all. But with gcc discrepency which was not supported by NVIDIA itself I thought that there is something wrong about that F30 so I've reinstalled yet again to F29
Unfortunately Resolve is still not starting ! there is nothing helpful within logs besides one error:

Code: Select all
[0x7f22292cbc40] | IO                   | ERROR | NVENC m_EncodeAPI.nvEncInitializeEncoder(m_pEncodeSession, &initParams) return: 8
[0x7f22292cbc40] | IO                   | ERROR |  Nvidia codec cannot be initialized with property successfully

Nvidia drivers are working fine, CUDA is working great. But Resolve is not starting at all

strace is not very helpfull either:
Code: Select all

I've installed Resolve 15 - and it works great!
So it's something with v16 :(

Hi. Where you get Davinci Resolve version 15.2.1? Official website propose only 16 and 16.1...

Hello all,

I've just purchased a DaVinci Dongle for Linux to export in ProRes. So rare to find! $1650 on eBay...

I'm bored with Hackintosh issues so I'll probably buy the new ThreadRipper generation with 64 cores. I already know a little bit Ubuntu (but not CentOS at all). Can you please confirm DaVinci Studio 15 or 16 works perfectly with Ubuntu? I'll use it with a Decklink 4K Extreme 12G.

Are the DNx export still an issue with AMD/Linux?

Thank you.
