I recorded a screen capture of the issue that I noticed.

Really excited to get DR working flawlessly as I am planning to transition most of my workflow to a Blackmagic solution, (cameras included).

If there is a better place to put this bug report let me know.

Cheers

Shane, I'm not in the office to check but I recall there was either a jumper on that motherboard to not use the internal VGA or u need to use CPU 1 (or both)

Can u try?

I believe that Davinci Resolve needs a dedicated GPU. And it needs to be CUDA 2.0 compatible or a recent AMD card.

Umm no you dont need a dedicated GPU , I ran Resolve on my integrated GPU but have to install beignet , the OpenCL implementation for Intel GPUs in Linux , though I wont suggest someone to do that. (Got a lot of warnings and popups after opening Resolve).

Resolve does not work without a high-end GPU. Its hardware requirements are described, in detail, in the freely downloadable Resolve manual. It is not helpful if this forum gets flooded with questions that have been answered in the software documentation.

If you are a Linux user looking for a piece of generic video editing software, please look elsewhere. Resolve is a specialist tool. On this forum, we have been asking - and even petitioned - Blackmagic to release Linux versions of Resolve and Resolve Studio. Flooding it with support requests for non-supported set-ups (non-supported distributions, non-supported hardware) isn't helpful and doesn't further the cause of Resolve having a sustained life under Linux.

I've now installed the BMD CentOS ISO on a three computers, this time a laptop Lenovo Y500 with 2 GPU's.

Everything is fine, but audio is, as noted above, missing. Since it is a laptop, Decklink is not an option. So the question is, would an Intensity Shuttle provide audio, or must it be a Decklink?

Cheers.

i don't think, you'll find all necessary answers concerning this new linux edition in the official manual!
most of the feedback here in this thread is really useful for other users and should be also seen as valuable source for BMD to improve their software -- the free version just as the expensive professional product.

Johan Cramer wrote:If you are a Linux user looking for a piece of generic video editing software, please look elsewhere.

yes -- that's indeed a very good point! we shouldn't forget, that there is a lot of free software available for linux, which does it's job quite well. it's not always necessary to look for commercial closed source offers, if tasks can be solved by those other means as well. it looks quite desirable, to keep the linux ecosystem as far as possible independent from closed source dependencies. sure, i like resolve! but i use it mostly, because there is no free linux NLE around, which does high bitdepth rendering in a similar satisfying manner right now. but this will change soon. the github MLT repositories already reports very important changes concerning this issue. it will not take very long and kdenlive/shotcut/flowblade will share this very important feature.

well -- just look, how tolerant and relaxed other "specialist tools" handle this kind of questions:

http://www.sgo.es/forums/topic/what-lin ... -mamba-fx/

and that's IMHO quite natural, because its concerning just another [linux] application amongst many others.

i wrote many of those requests for more equal linux access -- and i usually just asked for "equal support of this operating system" and an "as is distribution" --, and i'm quite happy about BMDs surprising decision, but that doesn't mean, we now shouldn't report any useful feedback and constructive suggestions anymore!
linux and other open source projects only became as powerful as they are by a vital community, open discourse and exchange between affected users. you don't have to participate in this kind of collective efforts, but please respect, that others do their best to improve things by communicative means.

Resolve can run without a high end GPU, but you cannot work with it. People are not flooding the forum with "requests" for non supported set-ups , they are asking how to install necessary libraries and link them properly because they are new to Linux.

And you are right if someone is looking for a generic video editor, take a look at EditShare Lightworks and Kdenlive , they are better capable of that.

Umm Fusion probably does not uses CUDA , it uses OpenCL and that too for only a limited number of nodes, you can use Fusion without a GPU.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostSun Mar 19, 2017 11:32 pm

I spent the weekend testing Linux installs, and here's the results:

Install from BM Centos ISO : FAIL
Install from DVD: ok
First boot: fail ("something has gone wrong, you need to log out")
Reboot: ok
Find Resolve: fail (resolve had not been installed, but Desktop Video was installed)
Manually install Resolve: ok
Start Resolve: ok
Copy files from BMPCC card to HDD: fail (Centos does not support exFAT)
Install exFAT support: ok
Copy files from BMPCC card to HDD: fail (files copied ok, but max speed of 45MB/s)
Output via DeckLink Mini Monitor: ok
Dual screen UI: problems (see details below)

Other problems:
Got the "something has gone wrong, you need to log out" screen several times.
System time displayed wrong (system date & timezone were both set correctly)

Install on Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 : FAIL
Installed Ubuntu + Nvidia driver: ok
Installed Desktop Video: ok
Converted Resolve installer to deb via makeresolvedeb.sh script: ok
Install Resolve: ok
Start Resolve: ok
Copy files from BMPCC card to HDD: ok (85-95MB/s)
Output via DeckLink Mini Monitor: fail (worked from media manager. At first worked from edit, then didn't)
Output via system audio: fail
Dual screen UI: fail (could not get the timeline to move to my UW monitor no mater how I configured)
3DLUT: fail ("missing lookup table" message)

Install on Centos 7.3 : some problems
Installed Centos + exFAT support + Nvidia driver: ok
Installed Desktop Video: ok
Install Resolve: ok
Start Resolve: ok
Copy files from BMPCC card to HDD: ok (85-95MB/s)
Output via DeckLink Mini Monitor: ok
Output via system audio: fail
Dual screen UI: problems (see details below)
3DLUT: ok
Deliver formats: problems (see details below)

Dual screen UI problems
Monitor 1 : 2560x1080 (UW)
Monitor 2 : 1920x1080

Centos:
With Monitor 2 set as my default system monitor (Gnome menu bars displaying on it), I can not get the edit timeline to display on Monitor 1. Switching the primary display in Resolve just makes the part of resolve displaying on Monitor 1 switch from 2560x1080 to 1920x1080 with a gap beside it.

With Monitor 1 set as my default system monitor I can get the edit timeline to display on Monitor 1.

Changing to dual screen layout or switching the primary monitor in resolve always has strange results (for example, switching primary monitor results in one monitor showing the desktop and the other showing only half of the UI), I always need to restart Resolve to get the changes to actually work.

Ubuntu-Mate:
Can not get the edit timeline to display on Monitor 1 with any configuration.

Deliver format problems
The Youtube & Vimeo presets don't change the video format or codec, it just stays at whatever you had it set to, which is DNxHD by default (probably not useful for Youtube & Vimeo).

Selecting easyDCP as the deliver format locked up resolve and caused my entire system to be unusable. I could still get to the gnome menus but no programs would open, including the terminal. Eventually I had to hit the power button and reboot.

I just installed resolve with BMD Centos distro and everything works great so far. But after the (auto) system update reboot, I can't not reach the log-in screen. Instead I get "Oh no! Something has gone wrong.A problem has occurred..." screen.

Do you recommend never to update the system? or Any idea how to solve this? Anybody else experienced the same issue?

On my laptop I have a Intel graphics card and a Nvidia GPU with Optimus support.
If you can't disable the Intel graphics card in the bios like me, then you have to make them play well together.
Make sure you install Bumblebee and then you can run resolve by invoking "optirun /opt/resolve/bin/resolve"

I am having good results with Resolve on Debian 9/Stretch.

Hope we can get an update soon to get sound working in Linux without extra hardware.
I usually do more editing on Linux and then I grade on my workstation, so that's quite crucial for me.
I don't mind the extra hardware in a workstation, but it would be nice to have a fully functional solution for Linux as well.

Peter, Yes, I've moved the jumper to use VGA so I could install and see BIOS. In the morning, I'll put one of the Titan's in CPU 1's Slot 2 and move the jumper to Disable VGA. Reinstall and report back.

Noel,
I'm using the BMD ISO from the Readme.Txt. I thought I read somewhere that the BMD ISO installed CentOS 7.3 and 12.5.5 with all drivers etc... Like 6.4 ISO. This was not my experience with the ISO from the Readme.txt.

If anyone would verify that it exists and/or post the verified link to "that" All-in-one-swoop ISO, it'd sure be appreciated. By default I'll do it just like I did before but with the Jumper changed, PCI-Cards installed, and install 7.3, then Resolve, then NVIDIA, then BMD Video Desktop....with fingers crossed.

I have noticed something yesterday. Not sure if someone had this issue before. When I run Resolve on Linux, it maxes 2 of the CPU threads to 100% even when the program is idle.. when I checked the system monitor, I found that it's actually the ResolvePanelDaemon that is causing this issue. I tried to see if the same happens on Windows, but it didn't happen

Shane,

Here's the link to the ISO: http://downloads.blackmagicdesign.com/DaVinciResolve/DaVinci-Resolve-Linux-12.5.5-CentOS_7.3.iso

The ISO installs Nvidia drivers and the DeckLink driver. After CentOS installation, the Resolve program files are in:

/opt/resolve/Releases

Can I ask what Linux distro you are using? I think this may be specific to Arch.

I have also noticed this. I suspect some library issue. In /opt/resolve/panel.log I get this:
Code: Select all
Unsupported DaVinci Panel API Version (0.0), please update
Verified on Debian Stretch and Ubuntu Xenial.

The quick solution (that I also use in my deb-package converter posted a few posts above) is to simply exclude the "DaVinciPanelDaemon" executable from /opt/resolve/bin/. That will stop the high CPU utilization but will most likely destroy any panel support. Still waiting for my micro panel so I can't verify this.

Hmm, being a Debian Distro I would have thought that it would have been more compatible.

I to am really interested in using a Micro Panel with Davinci Resolve (its so cute! and functional), so I don't know if deleting the library is the best way to go in the long run, but possibly if DR sees the panel all may be good.

Thanks for sharing!

UPDATE: I checked my Arch install with DR and the panel.log file:

opened log file
*** WARNING *** The program 'DaVinciPanelDaemon' uses the Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.
*** WARNING *** Please fix your application to use the native API of Avahi!

So it looks like its not findind Avahi.

I got it up and running on Ubuntu 16.04, symlinking as described in other posts. No H264 support/No sound (just like everyone else). Really interested in what it would require to write the dummy decklink driver. Does anyone have any links or ideas on a direction to move forward with this?

you can get the Decklink SDK -- i think, it's now called "Desktop Video SDK" -- at the blackmagic support page (and if you don't like to sign the license agreement, you will find lots of [often outdated] copies elsewhere on the net, because it's used and included by many free software projects, which support decklink hardware).

the SDK is very well documented and quite interesting for developers.

although it's a multi platform SDK, it's in fact designed around windows COM calling conventions. that's a little bit unlovely, but no real obstacle.

applications, which want to have access to your decklink hardware, usually load a specific dynamic library with a clear defined API. you could simply replace this module by your dummy implementation. even so, you have to be aware, that BMD could always easily prevent this kind of dirty tricks, if they don't sympathize with your hackish attitude. ;)

that's why i think, we should just wait a few months, before we spend to much efforts on crazy workarounds like this.
it's much easier and proper if developers from BMD implement this feature in an equal way as on the other operating systems. using well supported solutions, like portaudio, it can be achieved with minimal hassle.

Here's the link to the ISO: http://downloads.blackmagicdesign.com/DaVinciResolve/DaVinci-Resolve-Linux-12.5.5-CentOS_7.3.iso

The ISO installs Nvidia drivers and the DeckLink driver. After CentOS installation, the Resolve program files are in:

/opt/resolve/Releases

Cheers.

Thanks Noel!

Yes, this is the same link I used. So here's where I am now...

- Moved Titan Black to CPU 1 Slot 2 and now have usable screen. Yay!
- "Manually" installed 7.3 12.5.5.5 From ISO (same link as above).
-- chose default installation.
-- (there was no /opt/resolve folder.
- Downloaded Resolve 12.5.5 from site - installed
-- now there is a /opt/resolve/ folder
- Downloaded latest NVIDIA driver (from readme) installed (didn't see your comments that it was already installed...DOH!
- rebooted
- did Software Update (155 updates available) - chose install all.
- reboot.

-Screen hung at
[ OK ] "Started GNOME DISPLAY MANAGER"

- rebooted - (CNTRL-OPT-DEL)
- selected 3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64 (second option of the 3)
- booted to desktop!
- Started Resolve -
- TESTING...

Current Questions:
1. How can i make the 3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64 option my default boot option?
2. How do you engage/see up the Decklink card interface?
3. How can I get the RESOLVE Wallpaper? it didn't install when i manually installed....

Do you recommend never to update the system? or Any idea how to solve this? Anybody else experienced the same issue?

I still haven't figured out what I did wrong.
Do I need to re-install the nvidia drivers after the auto system update?
If so what would be the best way to do this? any specific version? how about elrepo?
Or should I just disable system update completely?
Obviously, I am a Linux newbie asking questions like this. So any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

If your system was updated, you can still reboot and select the old system, it's just not the default.

Noel, thank you so much.
Yes that's what I did.
And also it turns out it was the nvidia driver causing the problem after the kernel update.

So here is what I did to make it work.
1. install BMD centos 7
2. uninstall nvidia & install elrepo nvidia
3. After the kernel update everything worked properly.

Well I am positive on that sound problem that it can be solved, but is there any work around to get h264 other than converting this thing into image sequence for the lite version? (Same with Fusion but people are saying it is an WIP)
I was kinda amazed when you cant import h264 but you can export them.
This thing is kinda unfair cause both mac and win lite versions support H264.

PostTue Mar 21, 2017 6:46 pm

Hi
I used the CentOS ISO Blackmagic provides.
it seams blackmagic locked the Wallpaper ??? i have a dual monitor setup and default settings dont look good when i turn on second monitor.

I have tried standard right click change background and dconf-editor

also i can't change it from spanned

when i try
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-options "centered"
i get: key is write proteced.

Hey guys, I've gotten this to install successfully on my custom Linux/Windows/Mac machine, however, I cant seem to get the Linux Version to see my UltraStudio 4k Extreme 3 via Thunderbolt 3. Windows sees it on resolve, but the GUI via Centos 7.3 does not and Linux also does not seem to see any thunderbolt 3 device plugged in.

I'm a little new (sic never seen linux in my life before this build) but am ready to dive in head first with direction!

I think there are two questions for which I can't find an answer:
Do any BMD external products (USB /Thunderbolt) work with Linux?

If so, will they work with Resolve Linux to provide audio?
If not, then it seems there is no way, at present, to have audio on a Linux laptop.

Cheers.

I hope BMD will move away from the 300MB shell script to a proper package that installs a repository for future updates in similar vain as Google Chrome.
Depending on GStreamer 0.10 instead of 1.x (which also ships on RHEL/CentOS 7) was hopefully just an honest mistake, considering that GStreamer 1.0 was released five years ago and 0.10 is deprecated since four years, according to https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/ ... 00273.html

Wow that works like a charm , throttles down the CPU usage to 10% in idle.

Code: Select all
sudo mv /opt/resolve/bin/DaDaVinciPanelDaemon /opt/resolve/bin/DaVinciPanelDaemon.backup
I'm getting the same CPU issue on CentOS systems installed from the BMD ISO.

The Mini Panel works, but the DaVinciPanelDaemon runs several CPU's at 100% whether or not the panel is selected in the preferences.

I hope this issue is addressed quickly as the panels don't work without the daemon.

Cheers.

Try running it from a terminal to see if there's some errors, probably missing libs

No I mean run the version you had installed using terminal

to create a USB bootable follow the instructions for CentOS also make sure to disable UEFI thingy in your bios or make it both or whatever your motherboard has to allow non UEFI OS

@Félix: If your motherboard has on board VGA, and can be disabled via jumper, try that.

The Resolve CentOS 7.3 build image won't install on our supported SuperMicro X10 motherboard if the VGA jumper is not set to disable the VGA port. If the VGA port is enabled, the install appears to hang partway through. What's probably happening is the installer starts using the VGA port instead of the desired GUI card.

I managed to install successfully on Ubuntu with the .deb script, but I have two issues:

- no sound (as others pointed out)
- no monitor window on COLOR tab (as in screenshot)

so right now.. pretty useless!

Regarding the all black video preview, try setting the video monitoring bit depth to 8 bit instead of the default 10 bit.

The $1000 Resolve license for Linux does NOT include Pro Res support, correct? Is buying the full panel still the only way to get Pro Res renders from Linux?

WOOOW this is huge! Big thanks to all of Blackmagic for making this possible :-)

I'm working as a professional editor for about 15 years now, mainly with the adobe/avid products and therefore on Win/Mac, but as I'm switching more and more to the linux fraction because of compositing and 3d (fusion, nuke, blender), this could be getting a real game changer for me.

I'm on Linux Mint 18.1 and followed the .deb installation somewhere posted on this thread, works fine for me - except with the audio issue, which makes resolve of course not usable right now for me, but I'm sure you'll gonna fix that, right?

A question about the installation routine: I'm by no means a linux expert, but I was wondering if it wouldn't be easier to provide an Appimage version of Resolve, like for example Krita does? This would make Resolve independent of the linux distribution.

Best

Correct. You need the Advanced Panel license for ProRes renders on Linux.
