I'm having problems running DaVinci Resolve on my laptop running KDE Neon 5.18.
It doesn't open.

It opened at first when I freshly installed KDE Neon and Resolve but not anymore

CPU : AMD A8 APU 7410
DaVinci Resolve version 16.2.2

Overnight last night I churned through a ton of 5K R3D files, transcoding them to both DNxHR LB as well as HEVC [using NVENC].
This was on a system with:
  • HP Z8
  • 2x RTX 2080 Ti
  • CentOS 8.1
  • NVIDIA 440.64
  • 16.2 Studio
  • "Decode Options" for "Use GPU for R3D" were set to "Decompression and Debayer"
It all worked perfectly! Nice and fast.

What version of PostgreSQL are you running? It seems that folks are having problems when they try to use unsupported major versions newer than 9.5. 9.5 is working perfectly for 16.2 on CentOS 7.7 and 8.1 for me.

It's not related to PostgreSQL but it's an issue which may occur when we don't use the O.S. / keyboard in en-US language. It was fixed in DaVinci 15 but it's back on 16.

It’s definitely a database error, though, even if it’s only manifesting with the non en-US layouts. Just out of curiosity, if you haven’t tried 9.5, try it. Also try a disk database.

Don't think there's any way to downgrade. You'd just need to set up a fresh PostgreSQL server and connect. If 9.5 works, even with a non en-US keyboard, you'd know it's using a newer major version that's the problem. You could also just try a disk database and see if that works.

GPU AMD/ATI] Navi 10 Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT

Resolve installs, but on first launch I get a white or black splashscreen.
Terminal shows "New connection received"

htop refers to the process as being /opt/resolve/Onboarding/xxx - but it never displays properly

if I terminate the process, any further attempts to launch resolve result in a core dump, until I rm -r ~/.local/sahre/DaVinciResolve

I'm figuring there is some kind of first-run thing that is not working for me and can't get passed it.
(Interestingly, I can cd into the /opt/resolve/Onboarding/html and start a webserver (python3 -m http.server 8008) and see the onboarding welcome stuff, so its not a corrupt install)

Is there a file i can 'touch' to get out of any firstrun stuff?

Why not supported with the expensive Linux dongle is it's just a licence issue? Just like ProRes.

Absolutely ugly support for linux systems. I tried to install Resolve 16.2 - 4 times on different distro: Ubuntu, Manjaro, OpenSUSE, CentOS 7. No one works even don't start. Last try I use CentOS 7 from blackmagicdesign

Looks like there are a couple of issues here.
  1. You're running CentOS 7.7, which is not the BMD build. BMD's build is a pre-configured build of 7.3. I have it running on 7.7 just fine, but you have to know your way around the system to get it all configured and running properly.
  2. You're attempting to run inside a VM, which is highly inadvisable. Resolve on Linux is developed and designed for NVIDIA cards on a bare-metal workstation. I'd be quite surprised if that VM worked.

  2. You're attempting to run inside a VM, which is highly inadvisable. Resolve on Linux is developed and designed for NVIDIA cards on a bare-metal workstation. I'd be quite surprised if that VM worked.

I am always a bit frustrated that I have to extract and convert every single audio track with ffmpeg when importing footage from my camera. It takes quite a lot of time to relink all footage with the created wav files and is likeley to cause errors.

Maybe a good technical explanation might give me the "aha" moment....
As far as I know its not anymore a thing about licenses.

Absolutely! You might at least support these codecs for the special Linux dongle owners.

You need to have openCL functionality with AMD cards for Resolve to run. First I concur running in a VM probably isn't going to work and if it does would be horrible. Second thing to know is that the BM supplied ISO doesn't support AMD GPUs it is configured for NVidia. There are a couple of ways to get openCL working with AMD but you may have a hardware issue. Look here for more info. I personally have it running on Centos 8 with an RX-580 but I am using am using an older version of AMDGPU-Pro drivers. After I finish a project I am working on I will try rebuilding with the latest drivers. The good news is if you get it working DR is a really nice program.

Kernel-based VM's do work with Resolve, given a dedicated GPU.

VMware fails to provide the necessary graphics adapter, there.

For some reason when I try to open resolve it keeps telling me:

resolve: error while loading shared libraries: libcudart.so.10.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
When I look under

/opt/resolve/libs/
I see

libcudart.so.9.1
but I can't find any 10.0. I did try to run a find / -name "libcudart*" and there's nothing other than 9.1.

Does anyone know why it keep asking for 10.0? I'm running

Hello, a question. Where is activation/license data stored? I needed to reinstall system while a license was still active and I didn't have the chance to deactivate it. Everything is backed up, but can't restore everything due to unknown corrupt files. It's on same computer, so I think I can copy over file? :ugeek:

My understanding is you can install it on two systems. If you try to go over then the licenses are deactivated and you have to go onto the BMD site and do a reset and enter the licenses again. So if you installed once and had to reinstall with out deactivating which I have had to do, you can reuse the key. If it happens again you will need to go onto the BMD site do a reset and then re-enter the key.

Not quite accurate.

If you've activated the license twice, and then activate it a third time, it will do that, and deactivate the first 2 instances.

No need to visit the BMD site to do a license reset.

Ah thank you, interestingly I found copying /opt/resolve/.license/ doesn't work. For now, I've reactivated with code.

With help of Daniel Tufvessons »makeresolvedeb« I have installed DavinciResolve 16.2 succesful on Deban-Linux 10.3 (Buster). The machine is running with AMD-CPU Ryzeon 7 2700 (8 core processor x 16) and a GPU AMD Radeon RX 580.

During the installation process I got no error messages and the welcome-screen opend. All went well, but finally Resolve didn't start. In the Logfile I could not detect any error-message. All hardware-devices are detected. But I found one message which maybe could help to find a solution, but unfortunately I cannot interpret this message:

I have installed the mesa-OpenCL Driver and the system is running perfectly without any problems by using any software I have installed. Only except »DavinciResolve«. :-(

On the same machine there is a windows-partition and there is no problem running Davinci-Resolve. But I prefer to work on Linux and cannot understand, why it doesn't work.

Is there anybody who can help me?

2 things I can think of off the top of my head on the log side are being out of space or not having the correct permissions.

df -h will tell you your disk usage.

If you cd into your resolve directory on mine /opt/resolve there should be a log directory in there cd into it and

touch test

after that do an ls and see if there is a file named test. If so

rm test

if not you have a permissions issue.

As for the rest of the issues it usually boils down to an issue with opencl. Try running clinfo and see what you get. On most distros mesa won't get the job done by it's self. You will have to use some AMD components. I used AMDPRO my self but I believe the Debian guys have good mileage using just a few components. All your answers questions getting opencl going have been answered multiple times in this thread. I would suggest doing a search for opencl and doing some reading. This might help but be aware that the latest versions of ROCM may not work. There is a reference some where in this thread to the last version that was known to work.

yes it seems that I have an permission issue, because when I gave »touch test« I got the message »permission denied«.And indeed there is no test file. That's strange because all files in the directory /opt/resolve have the execute permission for all users (the owner is root).

Hmm, what can I do?

I need to reboot into another OS to check what the ownership and permissions on my resolve directory are and can't do that right now. I will do that later today but in the mean time if you do a

ls -l /opt

Is both the owner and the group root or is it root and some thing else. If it is some thing else then make sure you are a member of that group. I know one of the requirements is to be a member of the video group. Check the readme in your resolve directory for how to do that. But I don't think that will help with your case I think that just helps with accessing the video devices. I will post later after I have rebooted if no one else has.

The execute bit on a directory allows you to see what is in it. You need the write bit set to be able to write to a file in it.

I had a look and my resolve directory and it along with almost every thing it it is owned by me and I am the group as well. There are a couple of directories that have their group set to root. Assuming you are the ownly one that will be running resolve on that machine it shouldn't be an issue. Simple fix

cd /opt
chown -R YOUR_LOGIN resolve

I'm on PopOS (Ubuntu derivative) and Resolve Studio keeps forgetting my license. The /opt/resolve/.license folder just has an empty folder called Blackmagic. It works sometimes, but after some days it returns to having nothing there and I have to send another e-mail to support and have them check it, after they reset it then I can properly launch it back again...

I'm having the exact same problem for a while. Sometimes it works after I send an e-mail to support and they reset my license remotely, but sometimes it just lingers like that and I'm getting a little bummed out. This is otherwise the greatest piece of software I've ever used, this licensing problem is being really sad.

I did it, but unfortunately it still doesn't work. And the problem is: after CLI /opt/resolve/bin/resolve I get a long list of logfile-information in my terminal, but I cannot see any problems announced. All seems to be ok. But after a short popup-window resolve stops and says: »Davinci Resolve quit unexpectedly«.

I give it up now and work with resolve on a windows partition, what I really do reluctantly. But what can I do.

Hello blaselteso. It looks like you did move forward. It now very much smells like your missing openCL support. If you aren't running any thing else on this partition I would try installing the AMDGPU-Pro drivers if they are available for your OS. Not the latest ones though. I think you said you were running debian/ubuntu have alook here.

any ideas why this is happening? The first time I run it it showed me the welcome screen, detected cpu and gpu. On GPU said i can do some color but not high end. (under Windows 10 on the same machine i dont get this warning.)

Nvidia drivers are installed and working fine. (installed from rpm fusion).
Install is Fedora 31/KDE

@lost_soul Fedora 32 is now up and i see there is the same problem with Fedora 32 and 31 Maybe some nvidia driver issue ?

I guess you forced the opensource kernel "amdgpu" driver which is indeed the first good step, see the following grub kernel parameters the last 2 may not be needed:

The second step is a OpenCL driver, modern Rocm does not support any GFX 6/7 cards meaning hd77xxx rX2XX rX3XX won't work, however you may be able to use the AMDGPU PRO driver which comes with "legacy opencl module" which is inofficial for your card but probably still works. However the only downside is that you have to match a AMDGPU Pro supported Linux distribution, so modern fedora or ubuntu are not supported "yet".

Not saying you must use ubuntu, but I have described a method to test the AMDGPU + Pro legacy OpenCL module on a ubuntu usb live session (if you have enough ram) if that works you know its a software configuration issue with Fedora.

I'm using Arch Linux, but you can bundle quite easy Davinci Resolve into snap package that will be available on all Linux distributions, including Arch, Ubuntu, Redhat, CentOS, etc.

Hi everyone, I had to reinstall my OS and upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04, and I've lost my working install of Resolve on this machine. I've installed Cuda and OpenCL and used MakeResolveDeb to install Resolve with no errors, but I'm only getting a splash screen that vanishes. If anyone knows what steps I might be missing or screwing up, guidance would be appreciated! I'm definitely not experienced here.

Details:
    Resolve 16.0 (but have tried 16.1 and 16.2 with no noticable difference)
    nvidia-driver-440
    cuda 10.2
    OpenCL C 1.2

I am not sure if DR uses opencl or cuda with NVidia. I would presume cuda. But just in case it is opencl what do you get when you run clinfo? Is their an equivalent for cuda?

Your NVidia device seems to be set up properly. It runs openCL 1.2 which is what DR is looking for.

What happens if you run resolve off the command line?
Centos 8
RX 580
AMDGPU-pro
Studio (What ever the latest is)

Thanks for the reply, Shawn. I posted the output of running in the command line with /opt/resolve/bin/resolve above. I got some errors related to logging, but I didn't see anything obvious that looked fatal :/
