For me it will get right to the point that the project window should pop up and it just all disappears.

If you watch top, is there a resolve or "GUI Thread" process running when you think it all disappears?

If so, what's the RES value of the process?

If you see either process, and the RES value is 1GB+, let it sit there a few minutes and see if anything happens.

Yes, "GUI thread" is launched. I have to kill the task to run DaVinci a second time, sucessfully then.

I'll have a look at the RES value. It occurs randomly so don't expect a quick answer :)

@Ara: The splash screen error thing can happen to any Resolve system if there is some sort of startup issue.

Whatever might be causing an issue on Windows is almost certainly not what would be causing an issue on Linux.

Currently one bug in Linux as previously described: DaVinci launches, splash screen disappear. Then no more window.

Image

By the way, I had this error message when installing the 17.4.6:
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root'

Is it a problem?

Lucas, what specific application do you kill in the gui to be able to restart it?

As soon as the splash screen disappears, I don’t see anything resolve related in the system monitor and I’m unable to restart resolve. My only option is to restart the system and hope it works the second time around.

ah! thanks Lucius. It does in fact kill Resolve.

Unfortunately for me though, It still fails after the splash screen and requires a reboot to work.

Dwaine, I downloaded a new driver and changed a few display settings. Can you take a look at this new log and let me know if you see anything

The last couple of crash logs, it looks like Resolve was force quit in about a minute after the last log entry, which is closing the splash screen.

Are you force quitting the app when it appears to not be doing anything? If so, next time can you give it 3 or 4 minutes to see if anything happens?

Hey Dwaine, thanks for taking a look at the crash logs.

Yes, I was force quitting and restarting to see if that would change anything. It didn’t. Also, did what you suggested and same thing. Just times out.

Tried upgrading to 17.4.6 with no luck either.

The "Wait / Force to quit" pop-up from the O.S. appear often. Usually, I click on "Wait" and I can use again DaVinci... but not everytime. It would be nice to avoid this pop-up because it get confusing. We ask ourselves then if it's crashing or not.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostFri Apr 15, 2022 6:21 pm

I am looking to finally upgrade to DaVinci Resolve Studio, and as part of that, I am migrating from a 2014 MacBook Pro to a more modern machine Linux machine. So far, though, I am not having success getting DaVinci Resolve (not studio) to run under Linux.

I am using NixOS and I have a NVidia GeForce RTX 2060. I am using the nvidia drivers and GPU acceleration works under other apps like Blender. The NixOS packaging has worked for other people -- but not me.

I have tried several different versions of Resolve and of the nvidia closed source drivers. But, it crashes on startup every time.

When I start the application, it runs for a few seconds, but does not display the splash screen. It then crashes and displays the crash report handler.

I have tried deleting ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve to clear any bad data, but it doesn't change anything.

I am not sure how to proceed in debugging the problem. I am not clear if it is a hardware problem, a driver problem, or a system library problem, or something else. During the initialization it seems to correctly identify the GPU, find the nvidia drivers and CUDA support.

I am not sure if this warning is safe to ignore,

Code: Select all
Cannot mix incompatible Qt library (5.15.3) with this library (5.15.2)

Or perhaps these errors?

Code: Select all

Those two files it is trying to add do not exist on my disk. If I touch those two files, those errors go away, but it crashes just the same.

Here are the full crash logs from my most recent attempt to run resolve.

Is there more information that would be useful? What should I try doing differently? I have tried resolve 17.4.3 and 17.4.6. I have tried older and newer nvidia drivers than what is shown above. Should I try to get the Qt versions to match? Or is there a more productive avenue to pursue?

Thanks!

No matter what Linux distribution you end up choosing, I strongly recommend running Resolve 17.4.X in a containerized environment like Docker or Podman. Using this method has personally fixed all my runtime issues and has other advantages like being able to have multiple versions of Resolve installed on my system at the same time. I run Resolve on MacOS, Windows and Linux.... and I wish this method of installation was available on the non-Linux platforms.

Thanks a ton! This totally worked! Next up: buy Resolve Studio and a DeckLink mini monitor.

That's great news!

So, to be clear, I can mark down that NixOS was tried, tested and successful?

Also, what container technology did you end up using?

Soon, but not quite yet. I need to submit a few small patches to increase portability. I used docker because that is what I already had installed.

I tried this on Ubuntu 22.04 and found it works quite well with my limited hardware (Core i5-4570, 16GB RAM, NVidia GT1030) at least for smallish 1080p projects. I haven't tried anything really dramatic with it.

What I did find was that my Speed Editor didn't work until I added
Code: Select all
--device-cgroup-rule "c 239:* rwm" \
into resolve.sh, just after the last --device line but before the first --mount. There's no particular magic to that location, as long as it's in the options somewhere around there.

I have submitted a pull request for it, which will probably be included soon.

I added that "--device-cgroup-rule "c 239:* rwm" \ " lines and Speed Editor still isn't working for me.

When I run Davinci Control Panels Setup, I get this error:

So Im trying to get Resolve running again on Manjaro. Got it installed, got the licence key working, got it somewhat running, with some performance issues and the odd crash.

Where I am currently stuck is the sound. Sound meters show, but no sound plays through the speakers. pw-top shows audio devices being created and destroyed, helvum shows the same thing. Log spam in ResolveDebug.txt:

Code: Select all

Im not much of a pipewire expert - can any one suggest steps for troubleshooting? Full log: https://pastebin.com/v6cSv6Hh

Check what "ls -l /dev/hidraw*" says for the major and minor version number. I'm aware that not all distros assign it to be the same and I'm working on a way to deal with that.

Which panels do you have? I haven't got the Control Panels Setup to work in docker, but you shouldn't need to run it if your Speed Editor was previously working.

One potential way to give the editor keyboard and speed editor consistent names is by adding a udev rule -- though that requires root access on the host machine.

This bit of code here tells the udev system that when the vendor and product id are for the speededitor or editorkeyboard it should create the symlink /dev/speededitor or /dev/editorkeyboard as a link to the proper hidraw device.

Code: Select all
   KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1edb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="da0e", GROUP="users",MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess", SYMLINK+="speededitor"
   KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1edb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="da0b", GROUP="users" MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess", SYMLINK+="editorkeyboard"

As a side note, I think you are supposed to use uaccess or group/mode, but maybe not both. This is still a work in progress on my machine.

One thing I think is important is that you need to have proper device permissions for the user in both the host and docker environments. For example, if the devices are RW for the user in the docker container, but in the host environment the user does not have access to the /dev/hidraw devices -- then they won't be able to access them inside docker either.

Through trial and error I got things working on my machine -- but I still need to go back and figure out which changes actually made the difference.

Hi, recently NVIDIA officially released their open source Linux driver: https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules, it works the same as closed-source one, however, I found my resolve studio does not have NVIDIA encoders under H264/H265 with the open source driver, since the open source one is officially supported by NVIDIA and has NVENC support, please add support for it in resolve, thanks!

I'm experiencing the same issue in my DELL XPS 15" with ubuntu 20.04

When I start Ubuntu sometimes nothing happens, sometimes the black splash screen in the middle of the screen.
When splash screen appears, in a about the minute, the OS give the alert that Resolve won't respond, and offers to close the application or wait. Waitin for a long period of time gives nothing.

Any one could find the solution?

Still waiting for it! There's not much investigation by BMD.

Hello all!
I successfully installed Davinci Resolve on my Linux Machine (Ubuntu Studio latest version).
I own a Dell XPS 9500 with second NVIDIA Graphic card. Davinci runs with Windows. But I want Davinci to run on Ubuntu as well, because I don't want to use Windows anymore.
I installed NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu and set NVIDIA to PERFORMANCE MODE in the configuration.
When I try to start Davinci Resolve it shows me an error:
"unsupported gpu processing mode"
I can go to Davinci Configuration and there it says AUTO an GPU PROCESSING MODE.
When I try to change it, there is nothing to select.
Does anybody know, what to do here?
Best regards,
Okturion

Meanwhile I got it running be reinstalling NVIDIA Driver.
Unfortunately, I can't open any of my video files (raw files from my Canon Digital Cam).
I guess that there is a codec problem.
Does anybody know, what to do in this case?

If you are using the free Resolve version, H.264/265 files are not supported in Linux.

If that's not the issue, provide a link to one of the files, so we can test locally.

I find recently a Linux distro named Nobara, based on Fedora: https://nobaraproject.org/
Resolve works out of the box with AMD graphic cards. I use a Vega 56 card and with the standard Resolve installer it works fine. No problems so far.

That seems very hard to believe. But happy, if true.

Hey, so I'm trying to run this on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. I used `SKIP_PACKAGE_CHECK=1` because the installer wouldn't detect that I had libapr already installed.
The program launches fine, although one thread seems to be stuck at 100% utilization the whole time, and there's quite a big delay in audio playback, about 1 second worth of delay. There's no stuttering or anything though. I used to be able to work just fine using this setup on an older version of Resolve.

I've been trying to bisect the issue but I think a system upgrade just... fixed my issue. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi guys, I have a similar problem under Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS x86_64

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostTue Mar 21, 2023 10:02 pm

I reported previously, that my Micro Panel don't work under Linux Debian. I make today experiment.

Normally I work with install with makeresolvedeb. Today I made additional install in catalog ~myhome/BMDinstall with official BMD installer. Then open new installed binary (this entailed re-entering licence for Studio version). Panel have started working and app for panel setup were executable from Resolve menu (this previously were impossible)!

When I made uninstall (in next step) panel still remained working.

Victory!

I used to use MakeResolveDeb, but I've actually stopped and just used the default installed and have had no issues at all! It's awesome!

I would prefer a more compatible way...

On first run shows white rectangle. I kill process.
On further runs shows splash window shortly. Then program exit.

But Davinci just don't show any GPU. Can you please let me know what should I check?
Thank you in advance

Recent upgrades in Linux Pango result in Resolve not starting:
anton@PF16W6Y2 ~/Downloads/DaVinci_Resolve_Studio_18.1.4_Linux $ /opt/resolve/bin/resolve
/opt/resolve/bin/resolve: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_string_free_and_steal

I checked versions 18.1.2, 18.1.4 and 18.5b1

My distro (Gentoo) has only versions of pango-1.50.13 and -1.50.14. Both have this issue.
I also read people running Fedora 38 having the same behaviour

More Davinci Resolve breakage found in 18.5 beta -- on AMD with mesa 23.0.3 timelines dont render. Dropping back to 23.0.2 allows them to show again. 18.1.4 seems fine. Intel and Nvidia render fine. Did not check AMD pro driver.

I do wish Blackmagic would consider a installer format like Flatpak or Snap for a single installer that works across all versions of Linux!

Same issue on Opensuse Tumbleweed... unable to finish actual work on DVR Studio 18.5 and after try DVR Studio 18.5 beta 4
I've tried with actual updated libraries from system to /opt/resolve/libs but then : /opt/resolve/bin/resolve: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_task_set_static_name

Is it possible that BM update GLIB in his own system and directories ?

Hello, I'd appreciate to know if anybody already had experiences with running a current version of Resolve via makeresolvedeb on the new Debian 12 "Bookworm" stable? Would be very happy to hear any good or bad experiences.
