I've tried both and both seem to be working. I haven't had time to see if they are solid, as there have been disconnect issues especially with Ethernet. But at least the Mini Panel is recognized.
Cheers.
That's good. Thank you for the update!

Regarding the NVIDIA encoding issue. I can render h.264 and h.265 just fine. Does it have to be some specific source codec or settings to cause the issue?

Can you test a few different conditions?
- 8-bit H.264 or XAVC-S source decoded with CPU [decode H.264 on GPU unchecked]
- 10-bit H.264 or XAVC-I source decoded with CPU [decode H.264 on GPU unchecked]
- 8-bit H.264 or XAVC-S source decoded with GPU [decode H.264 on GPU checked]
- 10-bit H.264 or XAVC-I source decoded with GPU [decode H.264 on GPU checked]
I think it has to do with simultaneously encoding and decoding 10-bit H.264 and/or HEVC footage on the GPU, and my guess is that XAVC-I, being a codec that's extremely similar to 10-bit H.264, is probably just getting treated as 10-bit H.264.

With BMRAW or ProRes source media there is no problem. I tested a few random a7iii clips. Also without issues. Need to check the specific formats.
EDIT: I don't have any XAVC-I source material at hand but 10-bit from the GH5 renders just fine.

Anybody have a link to a known problematic clip?

Just tested out some XAVC-I footage, which is 10-bit, on:
- CentOS Linux release 8.0.1905 (Core)
- 4.18.0-80.11.2.el8_0.x86_64
- NVIDA driver 440.36
- GTX 1080 Ti
My jobs into H.264 failed, but completed into HEVC perfectly.
I'm pretty sure I know what's going on.
My GTX 1080 Ti has the Pascal architecture. If you pop open the "Supported Format Details" chart under NVENC on the
NVIDIA Video Codec SDK page, you'll see that for Pascal and newer, NVENC is capable of 8-bit encode into H.264, but capable of 10-bit encode into HEVC.
I'm fairly certain that the problem is that Resolve does not expose the proper controls to specify or automatically change bit depth for H.264 NVENC. It just tries to pass along the 10-bit data from the source codec into H.264, and then fails. It doesn't really expose these controls for HEVC either, but given that Pascal is capable of encoding to 10-bit, HEVC has no problem.

Besides this particular project import problem, does Resolve run properly?

Hello.
I am using Resolve Studio on ubuntu 18.04 and it works very well.
My only issue is that I have to enter my key each time I start Resolve Studio.
1. error mentioning write access issue in a location I surely have access.
2. next action upon starting the program again, it asks for the studio key. Usually, I just enter the key and it starts fine. That is what I usually do... until today. Now it says to contact tech support for assistance. I guess it is an internet issue. So I switched from my work internet to my tethered phone and still the same result.
***. I tried creating another database to hopefully resolve the error message but it is still persistent.
Thanks.

For any distribution, watch your opencl output! I did just upgrade from F29 to F31, and due to the upgrade got the following packages reinstalled, preventing resolve from starting ("Aborted (core dumped)"):
- mesa-libOpenCL
- beignet
- pocl
All those do install OpenCL platforms. Those make Resolve unhappy. When you run "clinfo", you should only see one platform (depending on your GPU), e.g. for Nvidia:
- Code: Select all
# clinfo | more
Number of platforms 1
Platform Name NVIDIA CUDA
Platform Vendor NVIDIA Corporation
Platform Version OpenCL 1.2 CUDA 10.1.120
Platform Profile FULL_PROFILE
Platform Extensions cl_khr_global_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_global_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_base_atomics cl_khr_local_int32_extended_atomics cl_khr_f
p64 cl_khr_byte_addressable_store cl_khr_icd cl_khr_gl_sharing cl_nv_compiler_options cl_nv_device_attribute_query cl_nv_pragma_unroll cl_nv_copy_opts cl_khr_gl_event cl_nv_create_buffer
Platform Extensions function suffix NV
Platform Name NVIDIA CUDA
Number of devices 1
Device Name Quadro M1000M
Device Vendor NVIDIA Corporation
[...]
The package names may vary on your $favorite_distro, but apparently it's essential to only have one OpenCL platform. I had the same issue on RHEL8 with a RX580 and the latest amdgpu-pro.

Thanks for the tip. Uninstalling pocl on F31 did the trick for me, but I uninstalled mesa-libOpenCL too, which didn't hurt Resolve.

I can confirm it under Ubuntu 19.10 with KDE. You MUST have only 1 platform or OpenCL will not work. I had to solve it manually.

That is what was stopping BRAW player from working on my system!
I had the on-board GPU disabled in BIOS (which is what finally got Resolve 16.1 working for me) but it was only after uninstalling Beignet-opencl-icd that Blackmagic player started working.
My separate problem getting Resolve 16.x working turned out to be using my motherboard video out to another monitor as well as the NVIDIA GPU (Resolve 15.3 worked fine though). I have just upgraded to a GTX1070 which has all the outputs I need, so no problem disabling the onboard video.
Thanks for the beignet tip.

I would like to know if anyone have managed to use resolve with an intel integrated card? If not, why isn’t it specified in the doc nor in the launch screen? The launch screen has even said to me something like “you will not be able to do color grading and heavily stuffs, but you should be able to edit HD projects”.
And if BM doesn’t care, this could at least be mentionned in the first post of this thread.

I'm having install issues on Nixos. I've installed all of the libraries that the Resolve 16 installer needed, but now I'm getting the following error:
- Code: Select all
$ sudo ./DaVinci_Resolve_16.1.2_Linux.run
Cannot open /tmp/.mount_teraPg/.DirIcon
Has anyoone seen something like that?

I'm new to Linux and Resolve, so if seem a little slow on the uptake, I apologize.
I'm running MXLinux 19 on a Ryzen 7 2800 with an R9 280 video card. I have read through the forum, and followed what advice I can understand. I was able to make the deb packet and install it, but resolve doesn't start: No splash screen at all.
Here's some output of some of the terminal commands people have used:
$ inxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: AMD Tahiti PRO [Radeon HD 7950/8950 OEM / R9 280] driver: radeon v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: ati,radeon unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa

OpenGL: renderer: AMD TAHITI (DRM 2.50.0 4.19.0-6-amd64 LLVM 7.0.1)
v: 4.5 Mesa 18.3.6
tthoms@mxeditor:~
$ clinfo
Number of platforms 0
tthoms@mxeditor:~
The rollinglog output is:
[0x7fb63ce2bc40] | Main | INFO | 2020-01-06 23:11:01,545 | Running DaVinci Resolve v16.1.2.026 (Linux/Clang)

I can't give you the terminal output for the resolve binary, because it doesn't seem to be recognized as a binary in the terminal. if I exec ./resolve, the terminal just closes.
Any help offered would be appreciated. If for some reason I can't run Resolve 16 natively, are there older versions that you could recommend, or can it run in a Virtualbox?
Thanks again!

The clinfo 0 line tells us that it doesn't see the compute part of your graphics card. I assume it has one if it is a 4 digit card. Resolve will do exactly what you described if it has no opencl. Are you just running the standard graphics driver that came with your distro or some thing from AMD?
I see that MX linux is debian based. I haven't run any thing debian in years so I don't want to talk authoritatively on it. But if you do a search through this thread for debian you should find the secret sauce for getting your systen going pretty quick.

There are a few parts to getting the compute part going. And yes it is complex as heck. I had been a dedicated Linux admin for close to two decades and it makes my eyes gloss over.
There are two ways to get this going with AMD. The first is the amdgpu-pro installer from AMD and the newer approach is ROCm. My understanding is people have had beeter luck going down the ROCm road with Debian than with Redhat distros. You can take a look at this doc
https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/RO ... in-rocm-26Skip down to the part that says "Installing a ROCm Package from a Debian Repository"
The big one is check to see if you have the rocm-dkms package installed. That may or may not be available from the MXLinux repos as AMD has done a lot of work with Ubuntu Debian and them have filtered down stream. I am hoping some one with more Debian Foo than me steps up. As I said earlier search back though this thread. I know the answers you seek are there.
Good luck

Hello!
I have a new computer and I tried two installs. First one was a dirty CentOS 8 install and gave me errors in both step 1) and 2) (can't find lib0something.c)
When Resolve doesn't start
1. Run resolve from a prompt (/opt/resolve/bin/resolve) and check the output for error messages
2. Make sure you have all required libraries installed. Run "ldd /opt/resolve/bin/resolve" and verify that there are no missing libraries (ldd should give no lines with "not found" in them)
3. Log files provide a lot of useful information. Please check for clues. Location differs between Resolve versions.
- Resolve 15 and below: /opt/resolve/logs/
- Resolve 16 and up: ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/logs/
4. Post here and provide outputs from the above
Second time, I installed
CentOS-8-x86_64-1905-boot.iso (Base environment) Workstation without any add-ons. Followed by Resolve (DaVinci_Resolve_16.1.2_Linux.zip) then executed the script DaVinci_Resolve_16.1.2_Linux.run
The second time also failed but I have no errors when running from a prompt or with ldd (I made sure with a grep "not found").
I also tried to install that
http://downloads.blackmagicdesign.com/D ... OS_7.3.iso but my machine wouldn't boot it.
Right now, I'm trying to install in a VM with these instructions:
https://sethgoldin.github.io/install-da ... ve-centos/ and if that works I'll try on my SSD. If it fails, gonna try with a fresh download of DaVinci-Resolve-Linux-14.3-CentOS_7.3.iso
So, regarding my fresh install of CentOS 8, can someone help? I'd like to get this thing up and running very soon. Thanks!
Here is the log ResolveDebug.txt
- Code: Select all

franc01s, are you getting stuck anywhere from the guide on GitHub? I know that it’s working perfectly for a bunch of users.
What’s your hardware?
Also you should know that the custom 7.3 .iso from BMD must be burned to a DVD and read from a DVD drive on the workstation to which you’re installing. Upstream CentOS 8 is fine with a USB thumb drive, though.

I got stuck when I rebooted at step 6 after rebuilding my initramfs. Computer got stuck during boot (something something about panic. I tried restoring the old initramfs but I must have made an error recopying the old name)

Sorry, not sure about the AMD GPUs; I believe the Linux build is generally designed with NVIDIA in mind, first. The guide on GitHub is for NVIDIA cards.
If you don’t have a DVD reader, you’ll have to use an upstream build straight from the CentOS project.

Hi @tthoms, for your graphic card r9 280
x GFX7 hawaii GFX6 tahiti "southern islands" there is no current OpenCL support by ROCM despite @lost_soul his claims the ROCM support got dropped around version 1.9. The following github thread shows the status about the hawaii family gpu's for ROCM opencl and there is a solution by @illwieckz tested in ubuntu 18.0.4.3 and ubuntu 19.10 working with davinci resolve 16. It uses the opensource AMDGPU driver not the RADEON driver you are using and it uses the closed legacy part of the AMDGPU-pro driver for opencl.
https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm/issues/871https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/RO ... -554974783So first things first I can tell for R9 390x it works with davinci resolver 16 in the mentioned ubuntu releases however you are using a MXlinux which I guess is a debian buster port.
The output of "inxi -G" shows you are using the dated "radeon" driver on a dated kernel. To fix this first you must reboot your debian/ubuntu with the following grub kernel arguments to force the use of opensource kernel AMDGPU driver "Southern Islands (SI) and Sea Islands (CIK)":
- Code: Select all
radeon.cik_support=0 radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.dc=1
Than run "inxi -G" or "lsmod | grep amdgpu" and see if the "amdgpu" driver is loaded instead of "radeon". You might need some firmware in the correct folder /lib/firmware/...radeon/amdgpu...
If your system booted with AMDGPU opensource driver, do the following steps to complete opencl support:
- Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
Than follow @illwieckz steps from this post relating your ubuntu/debian version I tried it with a newer amdgpu pro package from the amd website.
https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/RO ... -554738964Than install davinci resolve 16.0 version with its corresponding deb util, and not the newer DR16.1.0 16.1.1 or 16.1.2 those will crash!
To verify atleast that your system is capable, you can try all of these steps without altering your system if you have 16GB ram by using Ubuntu 19.10 live USB session "don't forget to press F6 and type the kernel arguments to force AMDGPU driver" than if it works you can analyse the difference with MXlinux or debian.

suddenly having the same 'won't start' issues from this thread, 'resolve won't start':
http://54.172.192.242/viewtopic.php?f=2 ... &start=100i'm running kubuntu and resolve has run fine for months. i'm not entirely sure of the sequence but i think i might have run a system update on ubuntu before the problems started. have done that many times before without issue but, i think, this time it might have been a problem. in any event, resolve won't start now. here is a log i found that might help figure out what's going on. apparently many others have seen this behavior but mostly on windows. graphics card is gtx760 with driver version 435.21.
- Code: Select all

http://54.172.192.242/viewtopic.php?f=2 ...

My guess is that you are running into an out of memory situation. The 2GB GTX 760 is underpowered even for Resolve 15. When Resolve starts there is only 1197MB GPU memory left to work with. Run
nvidia-smi to find other processes using up GPU memory and try to free up as much as possible.

Guessing here, but that looks like some kind of database issue, see if it starts with a fresh user profile.

not sure how to test that as resolve, assuming it starts at all, blinks off the screen as soon as i click anything. in fact, it usually just blinks off even if i don't do anything. if i let the first screen just sit there resolve blinks off after a few moments. sometimes it doesn't start at all. worked fine for months, now this.
thanks,
g

what would a better card be to get past this, bearing in mind that i've been running fine with the 760 for months? would be nice to avoid having to drop too much $.

Since you are running version 15 the config, logs and database are stored under /opt/resolve.
Uninstall Resolve, rename the /opt/resolve directory and install Resolve again.
That should give you a clean install.

If there was a kernel update when you patched have you tried booting off of a previous kernel that was known to be working? Have you tried rolling back the patches? If you can do that and it works then you can add the patches in small groups to see which one finally breaks it.

With my earlier guessing in mind I just tried Resolve 16.1.2 on a 2GB GTX 770 which is quite similar to the GTX 760 and Resolve started just fine and was able to playback a few source files so I don't think the GPU is the culprit in your case anymore.
George Lockwood wrote:doing some searching and not finding an uninstall procedure for (k)ubuntu.
If you installed using the native installer then there is no uninstaller unfortunately. Simply rename /opt/resolve and install again. If you used makeresolvedeb you can run "sudo apt-get remove davinci-resolve" to uninstall.

i think this is a real possibility. don't know how to boot off another kernel or roll back patches. any links to instructions? will do some searching in the meantime.
edit:
hold shift while booting brings up alternate kernels.

What meant was that try running resolve as another user.
Resolve stores projects and settings in ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/ and I'm guessing that something in there is broken as it crashes with exception named according to what looks like a database failure. Just add another user to your system and try running resolve as that user.
Or alternatively try with renaming the DaVinciResolve users settings folder above to something else, so that it starts with fresh settings.

thanks, oniongarlic.
if i do as you suggest, resolve opens. i can start a new, untitled project but get errors as it starts. the errors are that the media cache does not have write permissions. same for gallery and capture. these paths should have write permissions. in other words, it seems like resolve is mis-reporting this. in spite of getting the errors, the untitled project starts. being new, it's empty. as soon as i click 'import media' resolve blinks off the screen. this is with 15.1.2 lite. same thing happens with 15.3 and newest 16.
thanks again,
g

been playing with the permissions and such with little luck. found a webpage that suggested making sure that the first drive listed under:
preferences--->media storage
has read/write privileges. well, guess what, no drives are there at all. when i click the 'add' button, resolve crashes.
any ideas? i've been down for weeks now.

Howdy folks, I have a new build computer that as an ex Mac user has been nothing but plagued with trouble trying to get it to behave nicely with DaVinci Resolve Studio on Windows 10... As a final resort I have installed numerous versions of Linux & DaVinci Resolve, with no luck getting anywhere beyond the initial welcome splash screens!
I am not a coder at all, do not understand or enjoy coding & this is ludicrous for Blackmagic not to have something that can be installed on Linux that actually works!
I have tried almost everything known to man gleaned form various websites GitHubs, etc... & nothing has helped me so far.
My unit is constructed with this hardware:
MSI RX AMD 580
Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite
Ryzen 9 3900X
32GB 3000MHz RAM
Crucial P1 500GB M.2" SSD - 3D NAND (OS)
Crucial P1 1TB NVMe SSD (Scratch Disk)
However I am running the Linux install on an outboard 1TB G Drive as nothing has proved reliable yet to warrant wiping the Windows internal SSD.
This is the Log File I get when starting up, can anyone assist with instruction suitable for a complete Linux & coding novice? I would be ever so thankful, as at this point I am considering selling this machine, making a huge loss on it, just to get rid of it & buying a MacPro 6.1 that can be updated.
Huge thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

What linux are you running ?
You do not have to (and should not) run ./resolve sctipt with sudo. Resolve should install menu icons that you can click, otherwise just type in terminal
$ /opt/resolve/bin/resolve
Maybe it's something to do with AMD GPU. I personally use NVIDIA but Maybe those links could help you:

Bought Resolve Studio. Running it on Linux. Surprised to learn it will import h.264 video but not aac audio. (or mp3, for that matter). Which, pretty much every camera outputs. This is nuts. REAPER imports aac and mp3 on Linux, so it's not a licensing issue. With the commercial version, I should be able to import just about anything and have it transcode to an intraframe or low-res proxy in the background like Pr does.
Please fix this. I understand not including it in Resolve Lite. But unacceptable for a commercial tool.

I agree, also misses encoding support for AAC.

Question to anyone who has tried the BMD iso. I'm using the iso for Resolve 16 and after the initial screen when I choose 1 or 2 regardless there is some terminal feed essentially then the screen goes black. I'm on a core i7 2600k with an 8GB AMD RX570 have just one drive in the machine. The disk runs for a while at high RPMs then stops or maybe not, unclear. But the black screen. Is that normal, is this a headless install, of a video editor? Is this a driver issue for the graphics card? I'm just trying to figure out how to proceed. I figure I will use the automatic install and let it sit for an hour or so and just wait it out for now then check back from my dual boot set up which I will plug back in later, but I'm wondering the point of all this if the ISO is missing AMD drivers for a pre-Vega card that has the RAM for some fairly heavy processing.

The ISO only works with an NVIDIA graphics card.
If you do an Alt-F3 or F4 or F5, you should get a text login window. You could potentially install an AMD driver from there.

Hello, I've installed Resolve 16.1.2 on Ubuntu 20.04 but it crashes at starting. Two times, I've seen the Welcome Tour lauching with a black screen. But nothing was responding.
By the way, Daniel's script worked perfectly without any error.
Any help appreciated.

You will need to give us more system information. Most people run into problems not having a supported GPU and driver installed or not having any integrated GPU disabled in BIOS settings.

Yes, sure:
Gigabyte Aorus TRX40 Xtreme
AMD 3990X
64 GB RAM
SSDs
Radeon VII (usually two, but currently one for testing)
No GPU integrated
Decklink 4K Extreme 12G (drivers properly installed)
Latest drivers, no overclocking

At IBC in 2019 I asked Peter Chamberlain "why AAC is not an acceptable CODEC on Linux" and he replied later in email that "the simple answer is due to licensing".
It seems strange to me that AAC can't be licensed in DR Studio when h.264 can, but what do I know - I just give BMD my money.

The good news from my last attempts:
- I can run the Welcome Tour et configure it
- I can see the beginning of splash screen now... until It crashes after searching for the control panel;
I've downgraded to Ubuntu 19.10 (instead of 20.04). I can't try 18.04 LTS or 19.04 because it's too old for my Chipset TRX40 platform. But I've followed this tutorial: to install amdgpu instead of rocm
https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=56878&start=1600#p583357It seems to have worked (please confirm). Here is the result of clinfo:

Daniel's script ran also successfully (0 error).
If I run "sudo ./resolve" from the "bin" folder, I can see more logs. The last one is: "HD-Audio GenericUSB Stream Output". I thought it could have been linked to my soundcard. So I disabled it by creating a blacklist file. So there was no sound peripheral anymore in the global settings. Then, I had this other message about "PulseAudio".
Hardware specsGigabyte Aorus TRX40 Xtreme (latest BIOS)

I don't know what else to do. Please don't tell me to install CentOS. I did it, a nightmare. Just to read and mount automaticaly a NTFS drive was impossible to achieve (3 hours spent just for this, and a failure at the end). This OS is for Linux expert. I need Linux to export ProRes (and yes, I bought the expensive dongle just for that).
Please help before I throw by the window my brand new 12k€ workstation.
Thank you.
P.S: Sorry for make you scrolling with all that code.
