poor render performance in edit

if I import a video (h264 60 fps) which I can view flawlessly with widows media player, I am unable to see it decently.
playing it as imported media or after adding as a timeline, the frame rate goes up to 45 - 50 with the video freezing, showing just 24% of CPU usage and 33% of memory usage.
This in Edit mode.
If I turn to color mode.... no problem, I can see it well.....
So if I want to edit it I have to set a playback frame rate of 30, but then if I add the audio it cannot be heard (just garbage sounds).
using the latest 14 beta version, but with the 12.5 had the exact same problem.
i7 5820k, 12 cores, 3.30 GHz, 16 GB RAM
nvida GeForce GTX 780 Ti 4GB
