Just wondering how artists are working with text in Resolve?

Are you using the inbuilt text generator?

or

Are you making files in external software such as illustrator/photoshop/Inkscape/GIMP then importing the element?

or

Are you using some kind of Open FX text generator?

or

Are you using Fusion & Fusion Connect?

I'm mainly using the inbuilt text generator myself, but find it a bit buggy and definitely limited. I'm thinking about moving to Illustrator. I haven't seen anything to make me believe text has improved in 14 beta either.

I use the Resolve text generator for placeholders. If that's good enough, or I'm just chunking in spelling corrections or revising full-page plate credits. done.

Tried the Fusion text generators, but its 3D is a bit, shall we say, challenged.

OFX generators are generally where your framerate goes to die.

You are going to laugh, or cry... why did Apple kill LiveType?

I often receive .motn graphics, which drive me crazy.

In previous incarnations, I have used LetraSet, RCA V-IV, 3M D8800, Inscriber... AT&T Targa Truevision...

Doh, I go back to Vidifont and Chyron, too.

I would really like to see future versions of Resolve tackle a completely revised version of the Title Generator. It has a lot of bugs and limitations.

JP,

I've still got LiveType running on my 10.12.3 OSX as well as New Blue CG (where my frames rate goes to die)
Both are useful especially as LiveType goes all the way up to 4K. Not bad for a 7 year old app.
Helps also that DR can read Apple Animation files.

Hi guys,

LiveType is the only app I also kept alive from FCS2, and it works very well and quickly. It's still my n°1 text app > export PR4444 > done. More accurate than opening Motion for the same actions.

Else, I may use default Resolve generator but only for super basic info (like quick pop up of a name, occupation with a softened background).

Fusion Connect ? For a big 3D text or specific 3D stuff, ok (way better than just ok btw), but for 2D and/or any lower thirds, it would be killing bees with a tank...

How about non-Mac apps? I am also Fusion "challenged" and would appreciate something simpler but more advanced than what is currently in DR.

thanks

On a couple of my systems I have to boot backwards a couple of OS versions (different boot drives) to retrieve some of the older applications, but LiveType gives you total control on a letter-by-letter basis. Some (actually most) of their pre-built animations are ridiculously silly, but... you do get total access to the entire FontBook and seems genuinely capable right up to 4K... all the grids, guides... styles... definable frame rates, really, what's missing? Not much.

Oh, yes the ubiquitous Chyron... used a VP-2 for about 8 years. I see that one of those sold for $4.25 online about 3 years ago. Great paperweight.

Hi, re text,

Just curious as to why the titler doesn't save custom colours for a project for the next time you open Resolve and that project??

Yep, correct and agreed. Some old fashioned animations don't work anymore on ElCap (but do on ML), like letters turning into grass/flowers or walking ones :) from the "pro" and the "collector" edition menus. But all the rest makes it fine.
For the other older app, I don't really need them but I know only DVDSP needs to be booted backward (else it works but won't encode menus in MPEG2 as it is supposed to), it's ok for Compressor 3/QMaster, Soundtrack Pro and Motion (though I installed v5).
But LiveType is the oldest...

i still have a couple of 5.5" disks from an old aston c/g. saving them to surprise my grandkids ;-)

meanwhile, i'm still using ps to create lower thirds and opening titles, which are generally simple fade i/o. do use sapphire sometimes for a bit of glamour...

Aston!
I remember (barely).
I think it was '83 and we had a 2 row Ross mixer.....

A decade later we had Pixel Power Collage that accepted .stl files. It had "Styles" as templates and you could globally change every text item associated with a particular style in one fell swoop. It was so much more usefull than award winning audio software......

I look forward to BlackMagic buying a top flight text generating company so they can incorporate acceptable text generation into my workflow.

I'm considering using one of Inkscape/Scribis/Illustrator/GIMP/Synfig/Nuke to do titles that are more complicated than just an end credit card. Then import them as a graphic element in Resolve.

Wish BMD had ported Generation to all OS, or even better integrated it into Resolve to manage media through other software. A great tool not yet being well used by BMD. Yet being the important word in that last sentence I hope.
