Iris vs 1050 free edition

PostFri Jul 07, 2017 12:07 pm

Maybe a noob question.
When editing 4k h264 on a dell xps15 I have of course the 1050 and iris option.

At the moment I'm using dedicated 1050 because I thought that would be the fastest solution.
However I'm also reading people claiming that the onboard card would be a faster performer.

Any ideas on this?
I can start testing this next week but just was very curious about some other experts.

I have the Dell XPS 15 listed below.
I can tell you from experience that there is a night and day difference in 4K H.264 editing when using beta 14 Free vs Studio. Using the Free version real-time 4K H.264 editing is essentially impossible with my XPS 15 because of the huge number of dropped frames. Using Studio 4K H.264 editing is fast and fluid with no dropped frames. I'm using the default GPU settings in Resolve Studio.

Thats very strange.
I have the Same machine and edit 4k h264 from a Sony 6500, a9 and a7rII fluidly on the free edition.
I do have resolve set on manual videocard and selected the 1050.

Even with some color correction the are no dropped frames it needs a fraction of a second to get to 25 fps but than it is edits smooth.

I'm willing to pay for extra speed. I edit almost daily on this machine. But you're claim of bad performance under the free version I just don't recognize. Also when you look on the resolve site it doesn't talk about more performance on the studio version for 1 GPU systems and standard h264 4k.

Not saying you're not right. It's just a totally different experience that I have.
Wish I could try the studio version to check myself.

Using JKL keys, tap J to reverse. Does it then stutter? Then, alternate between J and L. Is that fluid?

I never use the keys to be honest. I always edit with the mouse and ripple edit.
I'll have to check that. But the way I edit it's smooth. So that's what I meant. When reading your post it seemed like it was unworkable in free and silky smooth in studio.

I've tried to read everything about the difference between the two and besides using more GPUs and filters, face filters etc I can't see them mention a difference in speed on machines like the dell.

If it is they should give more attention to it because I want every speed increase I can get but it should be on my system (9560 dell) and h264.

OK. I bought the Studio edition because I was having a lot of problems editing H.264 smoothly without dropping a lot of frames. I was dropping enough frames to make editing very difficult. I do edit using JKL all the time and depend on it for the way I work. I was having to always optimize my media before I could edit smoothly.

I'm going to uninstall my Studio and go back to Free and see if I have the same problem again. I'll report back.

Thanks.
Curious to see if that changes.
Otherwise I'm also going for studio
Coming from FCPx on the Mac premiere is great but davinci is just more easy to edit in the way I'm used to

OK. I uninstalled Studio and installed Free.
I had the same problems as before but not as severe with beta 5.
Pressing "Play" or "L" now works OK unless I increase speed by double tapping "L" twice" or "thrice".
If I press "J" to reverse, it reverses OK most of the time but not always.
If I double tap "J" it stutters at double speed in reverse.

I use JKL to edit and I frequently double tap J and L to increase editing speed both forward and backward. I need to have JKL working reliably when editing H.264 4K UHD and it doesn't in the Free version.

I went back to Studio and all works reliably the way it should again.
I also like all those cool Studio extras.
And the price lowered to $299 is nice.

Pricing is very nice indeed
Let's hope they offer a trial on the studio version soon so I can test if it's a difference in what I do.

Thanks for testing
Really wish BM would confirm this. Would be a reason to switch.

And Blackmagic did confirm that the speed increase editing H.264 was a Studio only feature here on the forum...

Hmmm, they do....it's called Resolve which you can get for free right now. Either you can see the benefit of spending $300 for Studio or you don't.
