DRIVING ME CRAZY! Losing audio

Semi-newb, sorry this is prob REALLY basic.

I have a clip that plays fine in Media and left monitor of EDIT -- both video and audio play.

But if I drag it into the timeline, the audio gets stripped. It shows an audio track, but there's no waveform.

Am I nuts? Totally missing something?
