Video is pixelated after exporting

PostWed Aug 02, 2017 8:48 pm

If you take a look at
you will see there are several places throughout the video that is very pixelated. The pixelation only occurs after exporting. During editing, the video looks perfectly fine.

The footage is from a GoPro Hero 4 Silver, a Nikon D7100 DSLR and a DJI Phantom 4, all which were recorded in 1080p.

I'm editing with Resolve 14

My export settings are the standard Youtube 1080p Preset which is what all of my videos are exported as. The only thing that makes this video different from my previous videos was this was the first time I used 3 different source material.

I just exported the video again and that did not resolve the issue.

Computer Specs:
3.2Ghz i5 Processor
16GB RAM
500GB SSD for C:
1TB SATA HD for Storage Drive
2GB GeForce GT640 Graphics Card

Any suggestions?

Do you see this pixelation on your video before uploading to YouTube? Make sure that the bit rate you use when rendering your edit at least equals your camera originals. As I shoot at 35Mbps, I render my final video at this rate and then upload. Even then you may still see some artifacts when replayed in YouTube.

Yes, the pixelation is in the exported video prior to uploading to Youtube. How can I tell what bitrate the sources are?

The easiest way is to install MediaInfo on your PC although it just reads the metadata of the file rather than actually preforming a bitrate analysis (so it may not be 100% accurate especially for VBR sources). Otherwise, consult your camera manuals which should say what bitrate they record at.

Dloaded Media Info.

Phantom 4 - 60Mb/s, 1920 x 1080 at 59.940fps
DSLR - 24Mb/s, 1920 x 1080 at 23.976fps
GoPro Hero 4 - 366Mb/s, 1920 x 1080 at 59.940fps

What suggestions would you recommend that I change for the export?

In Resolve, the Youtube 1080p Preset uses:

Format: Quicktime
Codec: H.264
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 59.94
Quality: Restrict to 10000 Kb/s

Going to try changing the quality to Automatic, Best and see if that helps.

I notice the frame rate and the bitrate on the Nikon D7100 is about 1/2 that of the Drone and GoPro.

The file was the same size after export as the original and still had pixelation.

My project settings shows the Timeline Framerate is 59.94 and Playback frame rate is 59.94

yes -- h.264 export in resolve is always a disaster.
just use an external x264 based transcoder (handbrake etc.) to get much better results with smaller file size.

Or use ProRes/DNxHR if you have good internet (not too long videos).
Your video looks bad, very bad.

To find the bit rate of your camera originals right click on the file, click properties and select details. It will show you the bit rate in kilobits per second. When using the YouTube preset double click on the 10000 in the restrict bit rate to box and enter the amount that your source material is shot at. In my case as the source is 35Mbps I enter 35000. Now your render will be at this bit rate.
I have also had great success with DNxHD, though the file sizes are much larger. Shooting 1080 50p gives me a bit rate around 70Mbps in DNxHD 36.

If I download and use Handbrake to compress the final video, what settings do I use to first export the video from Resolve?

I see DNxHR export options in Resolve but how do I know which one to use? I do not however see ProRes. The only ProRes I know of is what my GoPro settings offer.

My video has all three sources above....so what would I enter?

Thanks Charles. I just exported using DNxHD 36 and it exported faster but I'm only hearing the audio. I'm not seeing the video. The file size is definitely a LOT larger. Went from 307MB to 2.4GB.

I've uploaded quite a few videos to youtube and again, this is only video that has ever done this. Is it because I am using different source materials?

So it definitely appears it's an exporting issue. Not sure if this is because of using Resolve 14 instead of 12 or something else.

I just exported using the suggested DNxHD 36 Codec and the video is no longer pixelated -

So since I cannot view the video on my computer, I'm assuming I do not have that Codec on my PC. Is that correct?

well -- it's not pixelated but shows other ugly artifacts.
DNxHD 36 Codec is only a codec for proxy previews. it wasn't designed for any other purpose.

maybe you should compare it to actual VP9 results uploaded to youtube...
