audio clip panning in v14 missing?

Audio clip panning seems to be removed for v14. Panning is no longer available in the inspector, and in fairlight page a stereo clip have two envelopes for volume, but they are apparently not independent, so panning is not possible here either.

Am I missing something? Or is Resolve missing something ;-) ?

Nope, clip only has volume and a clip eq for now.
You can use track automation to record panning moves. But also track automation has not been fully implemented yet. You can record/overwrite , but not edit, delete automation data (yet).

Thanks for the heads up. Using automation also is not a good way of panning clips, as the pan will be off if one moves clips around on the timeline. That sort of defeats the purpose of doing edit/color/audio in the same software.

14 is totally awesome, and a dream come true on many ways, but it seems odd that such a basic function as *clip*panning is missing from a final relase... Hope it's there in the next update though.

Not at my system to check, if you adjust the divergence will your pan now operate as you need?

hi Peter,

OP is talking clip panning not track panning. Currenly only clip volume and clip eq are available.

The pan works well provided you follow the steps:
1- automation enable
2- Pan enable
3- select Pan

open pan screen
4- Clic automation ON
If automation is properly prepared, the PAN line is red ("recordable")

Start Playback
Play with the Left / right button
At the end stop playback.
reclick 4 to disengage automation
(it works also on a 5.1)

Alternatively, work the stereo in 2 monos and pan on each mono track.

To overwrite the existing one: Automation Write,
To rewrite or modify the existing (and previous PAN) : Automation Trim

Hope this help

That's a pretty great tutorial / explanation Jean Claude.

I'm not in front of my machine at the moment but is there a way to keyframe these values as opposed to the automation approach?

This is TRACK automation not CLIP as asked by original poster. Nobody said you can not pan at all.
So in demonstrated case, if you move the clip , the automation does NOT follow.
In resolve 12.5.6 you have volume and pan at CLIP level. In resolve 14.0 you have volume and EQ at CLIP level.
Everything else is track level

There is a trick btw. As VST/AU works also at CLIP level, you could throw a super simpel VST/AU that has pan as one of its controls (or little else) on the clips as set the required level. You dont have automation however on VTS/AU (yet).

edited : saw that there is some sort of keyframing possible, so removed my original statement that there was no keyframing yet. There is but only for volume CLIP level automation

Thanks Steve.

For keyframe (Fairlight), Nothing for PAN. Currently, I found only for the volume: place the mouse cursor on the timeline and press ALT + (mouse) LEFT CLICK

After focus on keyframe and edit. (Here lower the volume to 7.00 (see inspector)

No, automation is temporal. If you move a clip temporally, the automation does not move.

As mentioned the only sollution in R14 for now is use a simple panning VST if you want clip level panning that moves with your clip.
If you own waves you could use S1 imager
Here a few free you could try (have not tested myself, just googled) . No automation though (yet)

Thanks, this is a good tip.

(Edit: removed question about recommended plug-ins, as I see you already did in subsequent post)

Thanks for a detailed guide, Jean Claude. As Glenn said, this is not quite what i was asking about, but I appreciate your tips none the less ;-)

Any word on when clip panning might be added back to Resolve?

Is there a way to animate clip panning in v15?
Is there a way to do smooth panning with keyframes and spline interpolation (even if it is track based)?

I presented this identical question yesterday in the 15b6 sub-forum: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=76717.

Quick answers: no clip panning, but simple track FX keyframes are possible. They are not smooth, FYI, in the way that clip volume envelopes can be key-framed.
