Linear workflow

PostTue Nov 14, 2017 12:47 am

Hello guys,

I have been struggling a lot trying to import Log-c files into resolve and then transforming them into linear.

My idea is:

1 - Import the Arri log-c material using RCM
2 - transform those log c files into Linear colourspace for postproduction reasons
3 - Export them in EXR Linear

I am using these settings, and this is blowing out the highlights:

Input colourspace: Arri log c
Timeline colourspace: rec 709 2.4
Output colourspace: Linear

Am i doing something wrong? Any tips??

What exactly are you trying to do? What is the final destination for the project: theatrical, broadcast, home video, online?

It is a commercial. So it could be for broadcast either online

I am just trying to set a VFX workflow in linear. Conform the edl with the arri log c rushes, converting the log c files into a linear colorspace and them exporting them in exr. Once I have the conform exported in exr, we are gonna conform this in flame and start the comps all in linear. Then, export all the shots again and import this into resolve to perform the grade. Does it make sense?

Hey Dermot, thanks for your reply.

But working in ACES wouldn't mean that everyone should be working in ACES? But what is wrong about using RCM? Sorry if the question sounds stupid, but I'm a flame guy trying to learn resolve and not technical at all. Hehe

Sounds like your timeline is clipping all values above 1.0 due to rec709 working space.

You should render out ACES 2065-1, not ACEScg because of two reasons:
- ACEScg is not meant to be put into container, it is intended to be working space only and can cause confusion if floating around on itself;
- Resolve is unable to read in anything but ACES from exr-s (it expects every aces exr is 2065-1), so vfx must deliver ACES 2065-1 anyway. You will not get back what you give out. In vfx it means you can't check if footage is properly handled through comp because you can't do a raw difference between source and result due to different gamut.

Hey, I know it's a 3 years old thread, but maybe someone will pick it up nevertheless

I want to inquire if every ACES workflow has got to be Linear by definition? or can I also export Log for the VFX studio (transforming to Linear on their end and back to log before sending it back).

thanks.

No, ACEScc and ACEScct colorspaces have logarithmic transfer curve and you can use either for storing image data in integer storage like video clips or dpx sequences. Simply make sure you tell them what the exact colorspace of data is.
