Is Resolve supported by OS 10.11.6 El Capitan

PostWed Dec 13, 2017 10:06 pm

I’ have been running Resolve since it’s all beta updates and now Resolve 14.1.1 and Fusion 9 on my iMac running El Capitan OS 10.6.11, never had any problem.

But after a week from updating to Resolve 14.1.1 from 14.1. It will not run.
One tech support suggested it should be on Sierra, but it’s too buggy for me.
So I would like to know if anyone running Resolve 14 on El Capitan.

For sure all along the beta versions, it was recommended to run El Capitan.
But when Resolve officially was released, the recommendation was changed to Sierra, which is odd; testing on one operating system and then switch to a newer one upon releasing it..

Thanks for any feed back.

I beg you won't have any feedback as you don't seem to have a problem, or anything else to post about...
Yep that's weird...

macOS 10.12.6 Sierra or later is required.

If you purchased a copy of Resolve 14.1.1 from apple's website, iTunes they claim it requires a minimum of OS 10.11.6 El-Capitan of higher.
from this screen shot you can see what iTunes lists for minimum requirements.

I don't KNOW, but it's entirely possible that the BMD version has a different OS requirement than the App Store version. As the App Store version has to rigorously comply with Apple's sandboxing requirements. While the non-App Store version can try to do a few things "out of the box" so to speak.

Of course one of them could just be typo.

The BMD version of 14.1.1 does work on the latest El Cap.

Never tried App Store version.

Can confirm that Resolve Studio 14.1.1 is functional on OS X.11.6 and what I will continue to use for the interim (until Apple releases the new Mac Pro).

Here's a quote from Peter Chamberlain:
We always specify the minimum OS in the read me. It changes far more frequently than I write updates to the config guide and primarily its to support the feature set promoted, and to specify the version we test with.

Older OS versions, no matter Mac, Windows or Linux, may or may not work, or may mostly work but we don't formally support, test or recommend them as they can't support all the features we promote.

Yasir, Peter already warned me about what's said in Reynaud's quote above, as I asked why the minimum requirement changed to Sierra although everybody knows it works on ElCap (ah, btw yes, it works like a charm for me on ElCap, Studio 14.1.1 BMD version*, 2 x gtx 980 ti*)
Actually, Sierra is the minimum required for coping with H265 in Resolve. If I'm not wrong, it's almost the only reason why Sierra is suggested, and it's an OS default compatibility with H265, nothing to do with Resolve itself.

*I've read around that Sierra had a few problems with OpenCL, which I don't use since I prefer CUDA on my GPUs... thus I don't have Appstore version (for other reasons too).

Make a clean install of Resolve and check again

Thanks Sam
A clean install what I planned to do, but not sure how to go about it, when I called Resolve Tech support, rep Marcie said they can not support me because Im running El Capitan.
Even though I contacted Support back when official Resolve 14 was out, I asked about the OS Sierra being the recommended one, and all along the beta updates it was El Capitan. They put me on hold for 20minutes and told me they fired up a mac with El Capitan, and no problems, it’s seems to,run well.

So now I have to find out the clean install process. The PDF manual is not fully searchable, you actually have to look for that section to find whatever.

In my opinion El Capitan is very stable, and I would like to avoid installing Sierra or even High Sierra.

Anyone can help with the clean install of Resolve, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
yasir

I definitely appreciate the conservative approach with upgrading OSs, but Sierra really is quite stable. High Sierra might be causing lots of chaos, but Sierra has been just fine for a long while.

Yasir, no particular thing to take into account : back up your database first > desinstall > install.

I personally never desinstall before installing a new version, so that's not what's called a "clean" install, but on the other hand I have no trouble...

If your issues still persist, then be more specific about what's really going on at launch, what your system is, what hardware did you possibly add etc...
