Tips and Tricks?

I have a few questions as I've gotten into using the software.
1. Any sources for tips and tricks to do certain effects?
I've got the general hang of it - editing the timeline with images and videos, adding text, using dynamic zoom to pan around images, fade ins and outs, but I'd like to know if there's anything else that's possible.
2. Is there a way I can do a typewriter effect for text? I looked online for a utility to animate such but can't find anything decent.
3. What's the best method for ripping and importing DVD footage? I've tried using a DVD ripper to extract .VOB files then using an app to convert to MP4, but it doesn't look quite right, the size ratio in particular. Example:
