Huge playback issue in 14

PostMon Feb 12, 2018 9:07 pm

I know I'm not the only one with that thing...

After recently upgrading to 14.3, I was 1st very happy to feel the speed of the color tab and to discovers the Fairlight sound tab. Great. Then the thing goes to hell.

SYMPTOM:
It stutters at 2-4 frames/sec and after a few seconds, it freezes. The audio of the video does the same except it don't freeze but stays in stutter mode.
Playing any kind of video file, mostly DNxHD 10 bits 1920x1080 without any color nodes apllied or color correction desactivated (whenever in the media, from source or inside the bin, or in the edit tab).
A music file plays OK. The same files plays fluently OUTSIDE Resolve 14. So it's unusable. Now I can use Resolve for color grading, frame by frame, and that's it. I remember when I read the "10 times faster", I was thinking "greeeaaaattt... mmm wait a minute, 10 times?" I was hoping for a little improvement, not that to be 24 time worst, because before I could plays all the same DNxHD files without problem.

What I tried:
Inside Resolve: activate proxy quarter, performance mode, media optimization, then all at the same time; change hardware preferences to OpenCL; new database, on a new location another disk (slower);
On the system: unsinstall the Visual C++ 2010 and 2013; unsintall Resolve, reinstall it; install latest Nvidia and CUDA drivers; tweak the Nvidia parameters (checked off all antilaliasing and stuff); desactivate the ASIO driver, run resolve with only stereo.
All that made nothing change, symptoms always the same. It's like if Resolve made his thing with lowest performance possible, without any regards of the hardware specs. Feel very low now, I waste a huge amount of time on this.

And the funny one: i tried to restore my system to the 10 days ago state (my backup just before upgrading Resolve) and tadaaaaa, the restore don't work well and I can't go back to Resolve 12.5. I'm stuck with the frozen playback editor, Jeeze... And if I install the 12.5, I'm sure the database will not work right? So maybe I lost month of work because of this?
I get my Resolve with the BMCC I bought but today I would be happy to pay 299$ if it's to get something working.

What are your system specs, OS, Resolve version, and format of your source media?

It feels like a NVIDIA driver type of issue, or something very fundamental. Did you change your NVIDIA driver recently?

Your logs show 14.2.1 and not 14.3 installed.

Plus, Windows 7 is not supported and could be causing issues.

But would be good to try 14.3, just to see what, if any difference it might have.

@Seth Goldin

In my profile signature. ANd it's not the source, the same files, same project and when creating a new one, the files don't play anymore. It's a major system problem WITH Resolve, because with QT Viewer the video plays smoothly like before.

@Dwaine Maggart
Thank you Dwaine for the answer. You're right, my bad, I mixed up with my earlier version in storage.

I'll try the 14.3 but I think Rohit Gupta is on the right path. It looks like my computer can not play videos anymore with Resolve, it's huge. I had playback issues before but maybe already then, something was not right with the Nvidia and/or CUDA drivers, but didn't showed big like now?

I updated Nvidia drivers a few months ago (then with Resolve 12.5) and didn't saw a change. Then install resolve 14...
I assume I have to say goodbye to my really well fonctionning Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8.1... [sigh]

Please go to w10 so you can use a supported and tested OS version.

@Peter Chamberlain ... Yes, I saw that coming... =)
I installed my 1st PC in 1994 wit 3D Studio under DOS then Windows 3.11, NT, etc. I'm reluctant by experience with any new OS version of Windows. But maybe it's time.
Thanks anyway for your input. It's nice to see that people try to help. I'm sure I am like many Resolve users, I really want to use this software and be known as it deserve to be.

Create a partition or add a SSD/HDD and install Win 10 + Resolve
You will have a dual boot system and all your Win 7 apps remain in tact.
I have had every Win version since DOS and 10 is by far the best.

You've reported so many problems in the past, that either 1) any freshly installed OS, including Win7, might clear up the mess you've already made, or 2) no OS is going to fix what's wrong, because it's a a driver or hardware issue, probably starting with that Quadro. If you expect to do any serious work, you'd need to replace it anyway.

But hard to know where to begin....

@Al Spaeth
Not a bad idea, thanks for the tip.

@John Paines
Thanks for the input.
- "The mess you already made", is me trying to fix something. I don't want to reinstall the entire OS everytime I need ti fix a part of it. And I reported some Resolve bugs or limitations, don't throw all onto my head please.
- You seems pretty sure about the cause. Can you elaborate to help me fixing that? And Resolve is involved in the equation, because it happens only in it, and now more in 14.
- Why "replace the Quadro anyway"? Is it that bad by default? And now I cannot afford to buy something around 1000$. Even less.

I'm not at all sure. But if you're not prepared to invest in another GPU, and you're sure it's not a Quadro driver issue,I think I'd give up and re-install the OS, in light of your earlier reports.

The best thing would be to restore a system image which pre-dates your difficulties, but if you don't have one, what choice do you have, other than starting from scratch?

— Tried: reinstalled the driver, kick out some useless Nvidia components, but no change.
— For now I succeed to restore to Resolve 12.5, the video files plays smoothly again, but the database seems to still be stamped "Resolve 14", so unreadable. Windows didn't backup the database. Crap.
By luck I could import project file I exported, but not all.

For now I stay at this state. Upgrading to Windows 10 for later maybe.
