Display used media on timeline / expand bins / date organize

am evaluating Resolve 14 and Final Cut Pro X. I just did some basic stuff in iMovie.

I do not see Resolve showing if imported media has been used on the timeline when the clips are shown as icons.

FCPX and iMovie can visualize the length of the imported media clips and highlight what segments of a clip are being used on the timeline buy highlighting the section with an orange line.

It makes going thru many non organized clips a breeze,

If I import many clips the Apple apps also can sort them automatically by date, with a separating line for each day.

I am wondering if these features are present in Davinci Resolve or not available.

It its useful to see immediately if a clip is 20 seconds or 2 minutes long, It makes sorting the good footage a lot faster in FCPX, But I'd love to find a way to be as efficient in Resolve.

I imported some clips into Resolve maintaining the dated folder structure in relative bins, but I am not sure how to expand all folders or add the parent folder. Also is there a way to remove duplicate or double referenced clips?

thank you.

Hey Stefano

FCPX has unique ways of presenting and sorting clips, You won't find most of these in Resolve, at least not identical.

I recommend you start working with Smart Bins. A lot of the things you are looking for can be achieved using them.

I use them to show all clips in projects with many bins and sub bins - you can't expand all bins otherwise.
I also use them to show timelines, graphic files, usage, and all sorts of various combinations.

Read about them in Chapter 8 of manual..

Thank you.

I feel with organized footage it does not matter, but if I have long clips of B-roll there may be the risk to use part of a segment more than once. I guess I have been spoiled with iMovie.
Final Cut is nice, bit the color corrections do not seem as good as Resolve. iMovie has really bad color / exposure corrections, but apart from that for putting clips together seems to offer a lot.

I'd like to master Resolve as it is platform independent, but I am wondering if I'd be a lot faster at learning to edit with the Apple apps and then use Resolve just for exposure / contrast / color adjustments.

I wonder why such feature is not implemented outside of Apple apps. I hope Blackmagic is considering the possibility of adding this to Resolve.
I will check the smart bins.

Thank you will do. If I have a long segment of B roll that I want to use sections of it on multiple parts of the timeline, how do I know which sections of the clip have been used and which ones have not? With iMovie and FCX I see it at a glance.

Hey John

This feature is so hidden I think it isn't even mentioned in the manual ;) ..
If you right-click any clip in the timeline you have a Duplicated Frames sub menu.
