Keyboard mapping for the Edit Tab

Hello, I'm not sure this should be a feature request or a bug, but on the Edit tab, everytime I type in a number on a top row of my keyboard, it doesn't do the function that I assigned in the keyboard mapping settings, instead Davinci Resolve always use those key for typing timecode input. I had seen it from Davinci Resolve 14 and now 15, hopefully will be resolved in the official released, as I see keyboard mapping is listed to be improved in the next releases.
It's actually the thing that keeps me from moving from Premiere Pro and Avid to edit in Davinci Resolve. I use the number rows for shortcuts a lot in those two NLEs and since I want to migrate as much of my shortcuts from other NLEs, I can't afford to lose a whole row for just typing timecode to jump to. I'd rather having the number pad on the right for that purpose.
Another thing, I wonder if the official release of Davinci 15 enables having two shortcuts doing the same tasks in one tab? (for example number 4 and Right Arrow can both do Step One Frame Forward in the tab Edit).
Thank you.

Hi,
I'm totally agree with sylvison !
I have exactly the same problem
the = key has the same behavior, it's use for timecode even if you assign a shortcut in the mapping setting.
Please fix this

thanks,
Tom

I've been dealing with the same keyboard mapping issue just like you and that's what makes me feel a little doubtful about my complete migration to DaVinci.
Shortcuts like to turn waveforms on and off on, close timelines, select only the content between in and out (I need to drag a selection through the desirable extract with mouse instead), expand or decrease the tracks sizes are a few of them to name that are missing and it makes the editing quite slower, at least for me.

Still I haven't seen this being updated in any versions of DR 15 beta, any chances this will be in the official released? I kept seeing keyboard mapping improvements being mentioned in the beta version release notes but it's always said to be in the future versions. Shortage of command aside, we are technically losing 12 keys (the whole number row, - and =) on the keyboard that can't be used for shortcuts. Please do something about this. Thank you.

We currently have no plans to alter the single key number selection to be anything other than timecode or frame entry. With many different keyboard types and many laptop users who need those for timecode its not high on our list to review.

This is very unfortunate as it 1) breaks the keyboard mapping for the built-in Avid shortcuts, and 2) severely limits the power user.
In Avid, the top number keys 1, 2, 3 and 4 go forward and back (multiple and single) frames. It's designed this way to allow the "left hand keyboard, right hand mouse" that's been proven for decades to be extremely efficient. (we then use the rest of the numbers (5 through 0) as personal shortcuts.)
Using Resolve's Avid keyboard shortcuts, using the menu to choose "Playback" > "Step One" > "Frame Forward 4" works fine, then after that, pressing top number 1, 2, 3 and 4 work fine... until you click on the timeline.
The current workarounds are to click on the icon area above or below the timeline, scopes, master bins, or other blank areas, then the Avid keyboard shortcuts work again (until you click the timeline).
One solution is the same as other software uses: differentiate in the Keyboard Mapping the numpad keys vs the top number keys. This way if a laptop or 10key-less user wants to use direct timecode input, they can (by not assigning shortcuts to the top number keys)... and power users and Avid editors can use top number keys for shortcuts and stepping forward/backward.
Please reconsider and enable us Avid users the ability to go between systems without breaking a 20-year-old muscle memory.
Thanks!

Hi, just wanted to add my voice to those raising this issue.
I've been hugely impressed by the work being done to transform Resolve into an excellent NLE, but it's frustrating things like this that prevent many editors I've spoken to from making the jump. As visualfeast points out, it's about the efficiency with which editing can be done with just the left hand, which is a big deal when you need to work fast.
Differentiating in the Keyboard Mapping between the numpad keys vs the top number keys would be a great solution.
Thanks - and keep up the good work!

For what it's worth, I've mapped "-" and "=" as zoom in and zoom out respectively. I had no issue at all until Version 15. And now, I have the same issue; "-" and "=" type into the timecode. It seems ridiculously silly that we can't map those keys anymore (it was previously fine).

I don't mind people being able to override this as long as those who want the top row and +/- to be used for timecode entry (such as myself) can do so. Very useful.

I too feel this pain. Just made the move from Avid, and these buttons are crucial for editing fast. Resolve is impressive, but I will miss these things from Avid, such as a video mix down. Certain things do need to be straight forward, especially for the editing side. As for the color grading aspect, I have no complains, it is solid. But if i'm to make Resolve my primary editor, it needs to be better than Avid. Avid is for sure an edit beast. I do wish Resolve beats it eventually.
For now all my paid jobs will have to be done on Avid with Baselight I guess.

Agreed. Video Mixdown (and Render In/Out) are essential features for a mature NLE platform. I really do hope BMD can take a moment to consider the inclusion of these incredibly useful features.

i just registered to post that i have the same problem. loosing all the keys is very hard to take and keeps me and my colleague away to use resolve as main NLE.

I think this (single key number row to function as shortcuts, plus enable having multiple keyboard shortcut options for the same ones) is not about that we want to limit anyone (Laptop users/non power users) from taking advantage of the software functions, but rather to have options to enable editors of other NLEs to transition and find editing on Resolve enjoyable and to be at least as efficient as their previous NLEs in terms of speed and choices when editing.
I keep seeing Keyboard mapping to be listed in one of the improvements through out the beta releases of DR15, but none has had any touch on this matter. Please consider including soon this function in the upcoming releases so that we wouldn't have to wait much more longer for this one. Much thanks to the Davinci Resolve Team.

Thanks for the response Peter, it's nice to see you guys proactive in the forum. This is, however, a feature that could really benefit us power users and is the only thing holding me back from making a full migration to your software. The people who prefer using it for timecode can simply not create a custom key mapping that utilizes those keys. When you try to create a mapping with any of the numbers you can have a warning dialog notifying the user they are about to change the timecode functionality of these keys.
Thanks for the consideration, I have heard how good you guys are with incorporating user suggestions. I really hope this is one that gets incorporated
Cheers

Coming from avid, I also agree. I'm trying to use a temp workaround via AHK
https://autohotkey.com/, so that pressing 4 would send for example shift4 to resolve. I just haven't found a way to limit it to the editpage yet...

Still no changes of this with the official release of Davinci Resolve 15

Please it is frustrating that we can't use the top number row for anything other than timecode input!
Ironically, Davinci Resolve has always had an Avid Media Composer's keyboard shortcut preset, yet many of the shortcuts included are unusable - because of this.

Also, the fact that we can't assign multiple keys for one action is limiting for users - let alone power users.
I strongly believe - as others have stated in this topic - that this is making it more difficult for editors to migrate to Davinci Resolve from another NLE to edit, even though we really love and find this software full of potential so so much.
Let's hope this get resolved soon. Thanks.

I asked the same thing on reddit.
I think it's bad design to allow me to assign 3 and 4 to shortcuts and then they dont work! I got the feeling Resolve was broken when i typed 4 and it didnt do anything.
This is 100% the number one reason why I am not switching to Resolve as my main NLE. Please, please add it.
It cant be that hard to change. Also, i users have laptops then dont change it.
You cant force us to adjust to new shortcuts. I have been using 3 and 4 for frame back and forward for 20 years!!!

Same here, been editing for 25 years on avid, my hands have grown on the keyboard using 1,2,3,4,5 to navigate in a timeline. I think Resolve is awesome and has spectacular features, but for me this keeps me from making the switch. I have a company with 2 younger editors and even they agree with me. Please change this, if laptop users want to type timecodes then they can right? But if one wants it to be something else it should be possible, I think. Untill then, unfortunately it's a no go for our company.

Same here.
Why not adding the option to remap these keys? If anybody needs them in the way they behave now, then those people can just keep them at default.
It'd be great to gave the option.
Thanks

I decided to give resolve a go.
- Install Resolve
- Opened it
- Went to remap shortcuts to those I use for 15 years
- first most important one is : 1 to dezoom, 2 to zoom, 3 to fit..
- Does not work..
- Search google for a solution
Here I am.
Please, let us remap ANY keys.

Thanks.

Same story for me. I know Premiere in my sleep, but I really want to give DaVinci a go. This might seem like a small thing. but re-learning years of muscle memory is no fun. There's enough new things to learn in a transition like this and having to learn the shortcuts all over again is just one thing too many for me...

So far in DR 15.2 update we can now use our number keys to do actions on the timeline, plus the visualisation of how they are mapped! Big kudos to Davinci Resolve team.
So far I could transfer about 90% of my shortcuts from Avid & Premiere, some of the shortcuts I think could also be improved, like the number keys are still unusable in the Source Viewer panel - they still function as timecode input, or when using shortcut to toggle on Inspector or Effect panel, pressing them again wouldn't toggle off those panels, or a bug when using Mark clip then press Ripple Delete (extract) right away would sometimes cause a wrong portion being deleted etc.
Also it seems that there's no Reverse Match Frames, Zoom to detail (by frames) and actions to cycle clips in the Source Viewer (like a quick Next Clip or Previous Clip action- when multiple clips are opened) in the current version. I hope they can also be included in the future updates as well.
The update certainly has made me tried editing a small project on DR to test it out, and so far it's been going great. Keep up the good work Davinci Resolve Team! Thank you

There is no seperate Reverse Match Frame function as the regular Match Frame works as a reverse match when the source viewer is the active pane.

While working on a timeline, I would like to assign a shortcut key to color the currently selected clip(s) Orange.
So far haven't got anything to work. Suggestions appreciated!!

I assigned a shortcut to a clip colour and it worked perfectly. Make sure you don't have anything else mapped that may create a conflict.

Hi Peter, was it global....I get confused by all the possible settings. The shortcut I used was available. I put it under edit/clip color/orange.

Don't understand what you mean by "global". I just assigned the clip colour to a keyboard shortcut (Cmd/Opt M) and it worked. You should be mapping Mark menu/ Clip Colour. Resolve 15.2.1

Hi,
Just made an account to say you should always be able to change every keyboard shortcut. All keys are important and should be able to be customized.
I'm very disappointed you guys aren't considering this to be something that you would review and change. I have numbered buttons on my mouse that I use in Premiere Pro constantly (Switching over because premiere crashed every minute). To have to click near the buttons in Davinci to even use that shortcut makes it pointless. May as well just click on the icon. Please make an option to not type in the timecode for all numbers, your losing users on something that would take basically no time to add an option.
Really making me second guess switching over, although I know this software is powerful and has a great workflow.

But why do Davinci Resolve let those key 1,2,3 etc. to be mapped on the first place, if you can't use them??? It's so confusing. Using Davinci for a year now, came from FCPX. Honestly, Davinci is great for Colour Grading, no question. For the rest, the software is full of little bugs and confusions. Stability is a piece of crap, pardon my French. The support answering you, like they are not listening to you. Such a disappointment..

Sorry for bumping an old thread but it seems that some keyboard shortcuts is not functioning as they should. Not sure if they are bugs or not:
On the Edit Page, I set my shortcuts for Effects Library Panel and Inspector Panel respectively as Shift+6 and Shift+5, I can't find a way to select or move between these panels by shortcut right away. After hitting a shortcut, I'm stuck with either panel. The only way I could do it is to select my active panel in between selecting them.
As there's a keyboard shortcut for selecting/unhide panels, having a shortcut to hide the selected panel would be nice. Certain panels can be eligible are the Inspector panel and all of the panels on the secondary monitor in Dual Monitor mode. Sometimes I just want to quickly hide other panels to prioritise seeing the Media Clips & Folders panel.
I hope there's a shortcut for the search function in the Effects panel. It would be great if I can just by using shortcut, moving from the timeline to the Effects Library Panel, hit a button and then start typing the name of the Effects without touching a mouse. Selecting and applying the effects to the existing clips/ position would be extra great.
A shortcut/a new function for searching for clip on the timeline would be nice. Also another shortcut for the search function in the bin & one can start typing to search right away.
I can't add marker to a clip on the source monitor - either with the button on the GUI or via shortcut - when the source monitor is selected . The only way I can do that is to click on that clip in the bin & press the shortcut to add the marker, then a marker is placed on the position on the progress bar in the source monitor.
Also, I couldn't find a way to set the keyboard shortcut for the Auto Align Clips by Waveform on the Timeline. Hope it is included in the next update.
I'm really happy for the recent improvements with the keyboard shortcuts, it really helped me a lot in editing in Davinci Resolve even more. Kudos to the team!
