disaster strikes, lost all grades - auto backups missing

Suddenly all grades disappeared as I was working in the Color page. Actually only one grade remained that was inside a compound clip.
Utterly perplexed how this could have happened without warning. There are only two ways I can see, one is "Revert to last saved project" and the other is "Reset all nodes and grades" but I certainly didn't execute those.
I have my project set to live save, along with automatic backup. So I could hopefully go back to the last auto backup... but no such luck. There are no backup projects and backup folders are empty.
I'm going back to manual save, for lack of a better idea, lost only about 2 hours of work...

Everything is back to working normally, now I get automatic backup files. I set auto backup to 10 min, before it was one hour. And I turned off live save.

This happened while I was using the tablet. Sometimes an accidental light touch can push a button and execute something unwanted. This happens sometimes, then I undo. But I don't know of anything that could make all the grades on an entire timeline disappear, except the one inside a compound clip. And Undo didn't bring the grades back.
