Davinci Resolve Studio stopped working (Windows 10)

PostWed Apr 18, 2018 3:45 pm

Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago I upgraded my graphics card (from a GTX 970 to a GTX 1080). As soon as I did it, Davinci Resolve Studio 14 stopped working. Every time I clicked on the launcher, the software didn't even open, nothing happened.

I usually use an HDMI or a DisplayPort cable to connect my display from the GPU. I tried to connect my monitor through a VGA cable from the motherboard and this time the software started normally, but when I opened a project Davinci crashed.

When removing the graphics card, the software worked again. It just doesn't work for me without the GPU because it's too slow for color grading.

I decided to do a clean installation of Windows 10 along with all the drivers.

By reinstalling everything, I was able to use Davinci Resolve Studio 14 again with no problem with my GTX 1080 for about a week or more. But a few days ago it stopped working again. Sometimes I get the software to open by reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers and Resolve, but when restarting the computer the same thing happens again.

I thought the problem was the latest NVIDIA drivers or something like that, however the problem also occurs with older drivers.

I also tried using Davinci Resolve 12.5 and 15, but the same thing happens.

I don't know what to do. I don't understand why it worked well before and now it doesn't. Is it a problem between Resolve and my GPU / GPU drivers? Or between Resolve and Windows 10?

By the way, i tried the GPU with demanding games and it works fine.

I need help please.

Regards!

Update 1: Resolve is only working when I open it while my monitor is connected through a VGA cable from the motherboard. This works only when I install the GPU drivers from the Windows Device Manager. However, if I update to newer GPU drivers Resolve stops working when I open a project, even if I open it while my monitor is connected via VGA.

Right now, I'm working "normally" only if I don't update the NVIDIA drivers and if I open Resolve while my monitor is connected with the VGA cable. Then, I switch to my HDMI and DisplayPort display and Resolve works fine (I have noticed a few glitches on the screen a couple of times though).

It's still very uncomfortable to connect my monitor to a VGA everytime I start the software. And I would like to update my NVIDIA drivers normally because I use this PC for gaming to.

In summary:
GPU drivers installed from Windows device manager + Monitor connected via VGA = Resolve works

GPU drivers installed from Windows device manager + Monitor connected via HDMI / DisplayPort = Resolve doesn't even open

Updated GPU drivers (including the Nvidia Game Ready Drivers) + Monitor connected via VGA = Resolve opens but CRASHES when opening a project.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 2:

I updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers. Now I can use Resolve only when I follow this steps:

- I turn on my pc while my monitor is connected through a VGA cable to my motherboard.
- I launch Resolve (If I try to open a project while my monitor is connected via VGA, Resolve crashes. I'm able to open empty projects though).
- Then, I disconnect the VGA cable and connect my monitor through an HDMI or DisplayPort to my GPU - Resolve now starts as usual.

Even if I found a workaround, it's still very uncomfortable. I'll very grateful if someone could help me.

Just a guess: are you sure you are satisfying the power requirements for this card? You might be drawing too much power from the buss OR you might not have a secondary power connector hooked-up.

Is your power supply big enough?

Hi, thanks for replying.

I have a 600w 80 plus bronze power supply. It should be enough and it's well connected.

Hello Peter, thanks for the information.

I'll be posting more details as soon as I can.

Until now I've only tried disabling the external GPU, but I think I haven't disabled my on motherboard GPU. I'll try disabling it from Windows Device Manager. I hope it works.

Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem as you, I have not tried running things through VGA on the motherboard and I dont see why the graphics card would have any effect on this program opening/running.

I also dont understand why there is no customer support for things like this happening.

As a side note, my system has 1000W power supply, so I dont believe the issue would be related to lack of power.

I've got a similar problem recently.

My understanding about that issue is that DR do not seems to like my onboard GPU been left active parallel to my 1080 TI.

I had to disable it first in the Bios.
DR was crashing allot before till it reached a point where DR 14,3 was not starting anymore.

After closly looking at the DR log file, I've seen that DR was still pointing to my Onboard GPU even after uninstalling the onboard GPU drivers ( Intel Onboard GPU in my case VS my GTX 1080TI ).

The only way I've been able to get DR back on my system was:

first disable my onboard GPU directly in the Bios.

uninstalling the Intel driver via the regular windows uninstaller,

uninstalling DR,

reboot the system,

uninstalling the left over Intel driver with DDU ( http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/dis ... nload.html ),

Reboot again,

installed DR again, and Boom, DR was back, and much more stable than what it used to be :)

At least, that's what worked for me.

Good luck
