Transition issues...

Firsr off, please bare wirh me as I am new to video editing and also new to Resolve. I'm a pretty fast learner so I appreciate any help I can get!
I just downloaded and installed Resolve 15 yesterday. I've imported my files, no issues there. I've created my timeline, somewhat. The issue is that when I try to drag a transition onto the end or beginning of a clip, the software sort of ignores me if I have all of the videos on the same video track. If I have a video on v1 and another on v2, overlapping each other, it'll allow me to do the transition, but not when they're next to (butted up to) each other.
Most of my videos are only about 1-1.5 mins in length.
Any suggestions?
Thank you for any assistance!
Jim

Resolve is likely ignoring you as there are no handles on the clips. For a transition to be effective it needs clips with length over the full extent of the transition. Adjust the out-point of your first clip and the in-point of the following clips to give enough handle length to place the transition.

Thanks for the reply, Peter. Please forgive me for sounding ignorant, but how do I adjust those "handles"?
The first clip is 00:01:37 long and the second clip is 00:01:21 if that helps at all.
Thanks again!
Jim

I figured out what to do - I went in and did a trim on the end of the first clip and a trim on the beginning on the second clip then I was able to add the transition flawlessly!
Thanks again Peter for the help!!

I have also the problem with transitions - when I apply any, the part between two clips just becomes black. The fade effect on the beginning or end of the video doesn't work either - no smooth fading, it just becomes all black suddenly. Any sujestions why this might happen?

Hey Olga,
Try what I did:
Hover over the end of the last picture frame of the first clip and your arrow will become a bracket. Click and hold and drag just a little to the left - essentially you're trimming off a little bit of the last clip (I'm assuming this is what they mean by creating a "handle").
Hover over the beginning of the next clip and click and hold and drag just a little to the right - you're trimming off a little bit of the beginning of that clip.
Move the second clip up to the first clip then try to add the transition. It worked for me. Let me know how it goes.

I am just starting out myself with the software. I fortunately came across this post and it got me going in the right direction. I hovered between the two clips and the cursor became two brackets ][. I was able then to right click there and was presented with choices of transition times and the transition that was currently set as default.

Hey all - I'm also new to this software and somewhat new to video editing - I'm having the same issue with transitions - almost as though my computer doesn't want to load them. I put them on the meeting of the two clips, but now when the cursor covers that area, what used to just be a cut from one clip to the next, is now just a black screen. It seems like it plays only the clear parts of it, instead of also the transition. Any ideas?

Transitions must have video to go from and too. For example, if you take two video clips that are each exactly 10 seconds long and butt them up together, you cannot apply a transition. If, however, you shorten the end of the first clip by 5 seconds and the front of the second clip by 5 seconds and butt them up together, you can now apply a transition at the join. This is because you now have available a 5 second "handle" on each for the transition to bridge.

You don't give your system spec but most transitions are performed by the GPU (I believe). If your GPU isn't up to the task then you might get the "nothingness" you describe in the transition period.

Also, as others have pointed out... there has to be some extra footage at the end of the first clip and the start of the second clip to allow the transition to take place.
