Collaboration Setup

Hi guys,

What accesible ($$$) hardware options do you recommend, to do some collaborative editing|post on one single file? Can it be done just using two computers on a network (without requiring extra hardware) ?

Also, both computers require Davinci Studio, or the free version has this capability too? :geek:

If both users are working on the same project at the same time they both need to be Studio licenses.

Assuming that’s the case (my colleague and I sitting next to each other with a full DR studio licence) - is there a need for extra hardware for collaboration on the same project?

No, either machine can be the server. A dedicated server makes sense only for larger workgroups.

What is the best way of sharing the video footage on a small 2 or 3 Collaboration setup?
Is the server only for the project database ?

Well, depends a lot on the kind of footage you use, but you‘ll need a fast network and a NAS, or one computer working as such.

Thanks Uli for your help.

What’s a “fast” network? As in how fast does it need to be?
A single Cat5E?
2x Cat5E?
Fibre?

I do mostly adverts and short pieces of online content. It’s a lot of HD/2K/4K prores 444, and some RED/ARRI Raw up to 6K.

I currently make a copy of all assets on a couple of 1TB SSD drives connected via TB and work that way.

Well, ProRes 4444 and uncompressed RAW are the most demanding formats regarding throughput, so get the fastest storage and network you can afford.
But since you are doing short pieces, your current method is not the worst idea, after all.
