Can I see the original, uncut clip in the color tab?

PostSat May 05, 2018 5:46 pm

Hi guys, do you know if there is a way to see the entire, uncut clip in the color tab (beyond its in - out point set during editing)? This is useful in order to white balance on the clapperboard.

Thank you

I think the best way to go here is to create a standalone timeline of just color charts, maybe 1 second per scene, and then use that if necessary. You don't need every chart from every take in the piece -- maybe 2 or 3 charts per day, depending on the number of setups.

In truth, I frequently throw all the charts out and just color correct from scratch, but it is nice to have the charts in cases where the project goes off the rails. And I also always try to drag along an offline copy of the project so I can see what the editor and director have been looking at during that progress, and I use that as a Reference Movie for comparison.

Note there are many, many major projects where nobody shoots charts at all and we just have to go by experience and gut instinct, and that's kind of the way it is. Given a choice, I would always rather have charts available, but it's generally not my choice to make.
