Panasonic VRAW ISO 5000 Footage Way Too Dark

PostThu May 10, 2018 2:02 pm

I upgraded from Resolve 14 to 15, and now the ISO 5000 VRAW footage in my project looks way too dark (like almost black -- I can get it back by raising lift/gamma/gain in the color tab). My project is being done in Aces 1.0.3 using the Panasonic IDT and rec 709 ODT, but if I change to Davinci YRGB color science, V-Gamut/V-Log timeline, and the standard v-log to rec 709 lut I see the same issue. I thought that perhaps some of my settings changed inadvertently, but I also see the same issue when opening older versions of the project from weeks ago.

Has anyone had the same issue? Any suggestions?

p.s. I have tried a number of different options on the "Camera RAW" tab, but nothing seems to have a reasonable impact. Note that the V-RAW folders were copied over to a "working folder" from the original Panasonic folders, and I only copied the V-RAW folders, not the whole Panasonic folder structure which includes BWF and Metadata folders. I'm not sure this would matter -- I'll try pulling in footage from the original folders to see if it's treated any differently. But Panasonic bakes ISO into raw files, so I doubt this will help. I'm not entirely sure this is or isn't a problem with Resolve 15, so I'm posting here. I'm wondering if now that Resolve 15 has Panasonic Raw in the Camera Raw settings that there is something else I need to do.

I have seen problems using transforms in the YRGB color science not working (Notably HDR, this may have to do with the new HDR10+ enhancements although I did not select it), OFX equivalents work fine.

I was not able to attached a .vrw file (upload didn't work). Is there anyone who could use their own .vrw file from an ISO5000 shot and see if it's way too dark? I've reverted back to resolve 14.3, so I can't screen shot any more. -P

Thanks Cary for your reply. Are you saying you've been able to have Varicam VRAW ISO 5000 footage in resolve 15 and not have it extremely dark?

I gave up after trying everything and rolled back to resolve 14.3 (luckily I kept database backups :)).

But I'd like to use 15 with it's better features, so I'm still curious if this is a bug, or I had set something incorrectly. I'm suspecting this is a bug in Resolve 15.

You do realize that Resolve 15 now has raw controls for the VRAW footage? If you select the Camera Raw icon on the Color page, and set Decode Using to Clip, does that, or any of the raw controls, help?

My VRAW sample footage with ISO5000 looks as expected.

Yes, I am aware, but I used the options on the project settings / Camera raw area. I believe I tried every conceivable combination.

As per my question above, does having the Camera raw options work properly depend on having the raw files in their original file structure including metadata?

No, I was saying that I have found oddities (which I posted in a separate topic) in the YRGB color managed transforms in release 15.

I'm looking at my files with Resolve Color Science in DaVinci YRGB mode. What happens if you try that?

For the issue I was having, the problem resolved by removing the clips from the media pool and then recopying them into the media pool. This was a project that was upgraded from 14.0.3 to 15, by the way.

I'm going to stick with 14.3 for now. -P
