How to? Crop/Mask one video layer over the other?

I'm working on a personal project and doing some finishing myself instead of handing it to the folks who know what they're doing.

I have a shot that needs a split screen but with a shaped matte. I could colour/render both clips and then put them together in Premiere/AfterFX but I know I'll have more control in Resolve.

The shot needs a shaped window so the square crop tool in Resolve won't work. I've looked through the crop section of the manual in chapter 29 but can't find the solution. How would the Master Jedi's here solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Take the second clip and put it on Track #2 in the Edit page.

Back in the Color page, create a Power Window on this track composed of the visual info you want. Now, right-click in the Node Window and add an Alpha Matte output. Connect the Window Node to the Alpha Matte output.

Now, the shape should be superimposed on top of Track #1. I assume this is the effect you're going for. This is a very useful effect for certain kinds of things (including color-correction problems). Chapter 51 of the Resolve 14 manual goes into this in great detail.

Brilliant!

Thanks a metric ton Marc. I knew it was in the manual somewhere I just wasn't sure the terms to look for.

Cheers!
