Obvious banding after exporting from Resolve

PostSun May 20, 2018 1:48 am

Hi all

I'm currently having a problem of seeing visible banding only AFTER EXPORTING from Davinci Resolve.
My current setup is a MacPro 2013, two CinemaHD display as Resolve UI, and a Plasma TV connecting BMD UltraStudio Express for 1080p monitoring.

I have a few footages from different projects, and from different manufacturers such as Kinefinity, RED & also the BMD Ursa Mini 4.6K Pro. Kinefinity recording in ProRes422HQ, BMD Ursa Mini Recording in ProRes 4444, and RED on REDRAW.

During my grading session, my footages seems fine, no banding can be seen on my Plasma TV or CinemaHD Resolve UI. But once I export them to ProRes 422HQ after grading, banding can be seen in Quicktime Preview and Quicktime player. BUT not in VLC. Example below.

Another Example on the Red Footage.

Then is seems Quicktime is the culprit.

Which specific Plasma TV are you using for monitoring? Not all of them are 10-bit -- in fact, quite a few are 8-bit and will show banding.

Try the export in ProRes 444 and see if anything changes.

I'm using a Panasonic Plasma TV, Model Number TH-P42X28K. Weird thing is it doesn't show banding when I'm grading it, only after exporting.

I just tried exporting to ProRes 4444, Banding can still be seen in Quicktime, but not VLC.

I just got an reply from Blackmagic Support Asia(I'm in Asia Region), their reply is

Have been running some test on the issue you facing, will it be possible if you do some changes on your power window tag like try to disable that tag and rendering it out to see if there is still banding around the area. If you're able to see the banding, let me know but if there is no banding around means is your [u][b]power window that is causing the banding issue
